medbays had always been cold to slow the growth of bacteria, yet tonight's chilliness is ice cold as midnight encroaches. she sniffles in response to the gruff voice attempting to console her, closing her tired, heavy eyes and letting the stinging tears flow freely down her pallid cheeks. her nanotech had given second chances in life to so many, yet there were situations where she couldn't always save them - this horrid, endless night being one of them.

while she could thank her lucky stars that her comrades had gotten out alive - the two civilians who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time had been beyond her help. angela knows that this happens in her line of work, but it never hurt any less when it does.

the scraping of steel to whetstone pauses, letting the comfortable noise of the crackling fire dancing before them meld with the loud chorus of the cicadas in the trees around the pair. despite the priming of the weapon in his hands and the combative connotation, genji had almost forgotten what they really were - soldiers.

crimson eyes slowly raise to the firepit built by the cowboy. using his senses to smell the smokiness in the air, taste the mugginess of the summer night in his mouth, hear the chirps of crickets surrounding them... feel the warmth of cole's leg against his side.

it was calm here, the other man perched on a log while genji seated himself on the grass. he hadn't realized how naturally it had come.
