Last christmas, I got a camera. The good news: the pictures it took was gorgeous. The bad news: I had no idea how to use it. Later in the year, my mom enrolled me in a photography camp without my knowledge. She casually mentioned it well into the summer. This obviously came as a surprise to me.
She explained to me that she wanted me to know how to use all of the camera’s functions and not just where the basic “take a picture” button was. I, being the introvert that I am, was nervous. But, she was right. There’s not point in having a camera if you don’t know how to work it.
The week came and the days passed. I was actually learning a lot! I knew how to change the lighting, the focus, the shutter speed, etc. At the end of the week, we chose photos to be presented in a gallery a few months after camp ended. I had a few pictures that I liked but none that amazed me.
I had always loved the aesthetic of neon lights and fast food and there was one location that had both. Dairy Queen. I told my mom my plan and she agreed to take me after dinner. It was around eight at night when I got my tripod set up to take pictures. The one above is actually the very first of about fifty photos that I ended up taking.
The next morning, at camp, it was time to make our decision. I selected about ten and projected them on the board so that the rest of the campers could help me choose. They all agreed that the “Milkshakes” photo should definitely make the cut.
I agreed with their advice, but I was sad to let some of my other favorites go.
When the gallery opening night came around, I searched the walls for my creations. I scanned everyone’s work and eventually came upon the “Milkshakes” photo. I actually ended up naming it “Neon” because I liked the aesthetic of the name.
Nonetheless, “Neon” will always be the “Milkshakes” picture in my heart.

(caption ok to delete, i just have to write a caption for my creative writing class jksdhgksdhg) For spring break of eighth grade, out family vacationed in Telluride Colorado. My dad hyped up the place for the “insane skiing”–which I had literally never expressed any interest in–but I found a different treasure on our trip. The town was absolutely beautiful. The buildings had not been rebuilt since the mid-1800s, just renovated. My family and I strolled around the city, and I was smart enough to bring a camera. I snapped a few pictures but none of them really stood out to me. We stuck our heads in a few more tourist shops and returned back to the lodge. Later in the week, we returned to the town square. This time, it was later in the evening. That was when inspiration struck. Around every corner was another little store, lit up for the approaching night. The moon was centered right above the mountain in the horizon–it’s a shame that I didn’t quite know how to work the light meter when the time came. I came across the quaintest little ice cream shop. It had a small line–manageable, but a sign that the ice cream must have been good. I stood in the back of the line and made my way up to the front. After the whole transaction was completed, I returned to the town center. The colors of the sky were breathtaking and I knew that I had to snap a picture. I held up my ice cream cone to the horizon and focused in on the treat. I didn’t know what I expected to come out of that quick picture, as I only looked through them on the way back to the lodge on the gondola. I flipped through blurry photo after blurry photo and came across this beauty. It looked like a desktop picture. Had I really taken that? Coincidentally, I did end up using it as my computer wallpaper.
