The making of my new publication “In Situ” is in full swing and I’m stoked that it will be released during this years REWIRE Festival.

“In Situ” is the first photo documentary on The Hague’s underground music scene and luckily Rewire Festival is providing the opportunity in the form of a grungy basement worthy of the Underground Scene  for the book to be released in.

“In Situ” is a 180 page photo documentary Riso-printed in black and white by Stencilwerck It features loads of photos from the Hague’s underground musical scene from 2013 to 2015, and is a hommage to now mostly defunct DIY stages, squatted art spaces and tough-as-nails artists, crowds and organisers.

Namens de nieuwe generatie rockfanaten: een manifest voor de scherpe randjes

Wij van Shaking Godspeed en Death Alley krijgen flinke jeuk van het starre Hollandse popzaalkeurslijf dat live rock ‘n’ roll al jaren in de houdgreep heeft. Ondanks de haast onstilbare honger naar live rock ‘n’ roll onder een breed en gevarieerd publiek, is er bedroevend weinig ruimte in Nederland voor avonden waar het echt om de bands gaat. De wurggreep van vroege curfews in sfeerloze betonbakken met veiligheid-voorop-mentaliteit zorgt ervoor dat bands als proloog van een avond worden neergezet. Het publiek mag ‘even een bandje komen kijken’ waarna de avond in de club om de hoek pas na middernacht daadwerkelijk kan beginnen – wanneer de bands al weer lang en breed klaar zijn met spelen.

In de greep van de muziekbourgeoisie De genadeloos verstikkende kracht van de Nederlandse betutteling raakt onze honger naar rock in het diepst van de ziel. Indruisend tegen elk fundament van rock ‘n’ roll zien we dat het Nederlandse popzaalcircuit graag ‘op safe’ speelt. Ja hoor, er is plaats voor livemuziek, maar alleen als het niet te gevaarlijk wordt. Van karakter en historie bulkende zalen, al dan niet gekraakt (geweest) worden gesloten en als goedmakertje komt er een betonnen sfeerspons die aan alle veiligheidsvoorschriften voldoet. Voor de zekerheid toch maar een dertien-in-een-dozijn DJ-avond neerzetten voor Jan Modaal en z’n kornuiten: bands maar even als snel voorafje. Om 23:00 moet het wel weer gedaan zijn met die gekkigheid, dan kan iedereen ook nog netjes met de laatste trein naar huis. Schenk aangelengd pils maar in plastic bekers, want je moet er toch niet aan denken dat er gebroken glas op de grond komt te liggen – zeker niet als mensen dronken zijn! Ongelooflijk dat dit de status quo is waar wij ons als bands, maar ook als publiek aan laten onderwerpen. Wie zijn zij dan, de muziekbourgeoisie? Die voortschrijdende inkapseling van spontaniteit en energie is onze doodsteek en we moeten het niet pikken: de scherpe randjes mogen er wel weer aan.

Kick out the jams, motherfucker Nederlandse bands zien deze verlammende structuur met lede ogen aan, want het is duidelijk dat er momenteel een enorme honger is naar de energie van zulke livemuziek. Shows worden door een steeds breder publiek bezocht, en naast de typische rockers, in leer en denim gestoken, zien we ook meisjes in jurkjes zich swingend door het publiek heen bewegen, gevolgd door een stroom aan niet expliciet rock-, maar wel expliciet adrenalinebeluste jonge honden. Deze frisse wind is een verademing voor ons als bands, want we hebben het rockgehalte in het afgelopen decennium vele malen slechter en beperkter meegemaakt. Vijf jaar geleden was het publiek doorgaans niet breder dan een harde kern rockpuristen. Het huidige publiek is jong, divers, fris, hongerig, en verdient daarom de live-ervaring voorgeschoteld te krijgen waar rock ‘n’ roll voor is bedoeld. We eisen daarom ons fundamentele recht op zelfbeschikking op: de nieuwe generatie rockfanaten moet door de energie van de bands de oneindigheid van de nacht in gelanceerd kunnen worden. Breek uit de verlammende klem: maak rock ‘n’ roll het epicentrum van de nacht.

Last Night on Earth De lust is er, het hangt in de lucht, het druipt van de met gecondenseerd tienerzweet bedekte muren, en nu is de tijd om het te doen. Wij van Shaking Godspeed en Death Alley maken ons hard voor de primitieve herontdekking van rock ‘n’ roll – de nacht moet draaien om de totaalervaring, waarin livemuziek iedere lichaamscel tot aan het ochtendgloren in vervoering brengt. Als dit onze laatste nacht op aarde was, dan bieden wij met Last Night on Earth de ultieme kans om de maximale rocknacht te voelen, horen, ruiken en zien. In deze nacht komt de vunzigheid van Sleazefest, de heftigheid van Speedfest, en de psychedelica van Roadburn samen in één rocktempel.

Vrijhaven at De Besturing.

On the 19th of June, Vrijhaven hosted an event at De Besturing with the folowing artists: Bear Bones Lay Low (VE/BE), Tav Exotic (BE), Weird Dust (BE), René de Haan feat. Club-Res (D-H).
