Have an electrician install a standard 110-volt outlet on the wall behind the hearth.
Using two pipe wrenches, disconnect the gas line from the fireplace and turn off the gas supply.
Apply pipe dope to the exposed threads of the gas line and cover it off with a 1/2-inch nut and washer.
Take the damper out of the chimney and burn it away using an acetylene flame.
Use a sledgehammer or cold chisel to smash through any impediments, such as bricks.
A tugging cone and rope attached to a stainless steel vent liner will do the trick.

Start installing the fireplace grate halfway into the opening. You may need to reach inside the fireplace to access the outlet from which to plug in the power cord.
