Every month is autism month for me!

And if you want to "light it up," please do red, not blue. When we see the puzzle piece or "light it up blue," both of which are promoted by anti-autistic hate groups, that tells us you don't actually care about or respect us.

One of the funniest failures of US school system is the fact they are legally obligated to teach us all the states but they never actually show how big Alaska is like I have actually had teachers tell me that Texas is the biggest state. We have all just convinced ourselves that Alaska is that small shrunken down thing on most US maps and the people that know it's the largest state can almost never accurately describe how large it is.

It has a national park that’s bigger than maine. Or Switzerland. A park. 

I lived in Alaska for two years and I will never get over the sheer overwhelming bigness of it. 

Nights where the sky is clear you can see clusters of stars or the Northern Lights dancing. When the lights are rippling especially strong and fast you can hear a static crackle in the air. When the moon is out after it’s snowed, you don’t need flashlights to see. Everything glows and glimmers like polished quartz.  

But when the sky is clouded over so you can’t see the stars, you can kind of almost sense the mountains towering over you and helping to block out the light, these giant monoliths acting like this void darker than your soul. I’ve never experience night like Alaska night. 

Everything is big, the mountains, the sky, the valleys. 

And the dark.

I don't understand why liking instead of reblogging is bad?

I mean it’s not like…morally wrong or anything it’s just annoying from the perspective of content creators. bc while likes are lovely and appreciated they don’t SHARE the content. so like if I make a gifset and it gets 200 rbs and 800 likes, that’s a lot of lost opportunities for other people to see the post, and while I edit bc I enjoy it it’s frustrating when you can spend hours (or days and weeks in the case of more complex stuff, not to mention art and fics which usually get even less attention than edits) and it’s just not actually shared around?

it’s also a lot bc this is a very new trend on tumblr, pre 2019 most edits got a good mixture of likes AND rbs (most of my older gifsets were pretty even) and today I have made posts that will get 200+ likes and less than 50 rbs so it’s just such a dramatic shift and I think a lot of us are confused on to why it happened.

also to add: its becoming a trend for non content creators to complain about a lack of content for fandoms but when posts are not getting reblogged and are just sitting away in ppls likes instead where no one can see them, of course its going to feel like theres no content. edits/fics/gifs etc arent making it to peoples dashes and as a creator that’s incredibly frustrating. non creators complain/demand that we arent making enough content for the fandom but like. yes. we’re making content, yall just dont want to share it for some reason. so that complaining about a lack of content when there really isnt + continuing to disrespect creators (ie stealing our edits, deleting our captions etc) is just discouraging us more and soon there will be a true lack of content on here

like penny said. likes arent bad, but thats not how content is shared. no one is liking my content then coming into my ask to tell me how much they like my gifsets and want to see more of them. all of the nicest things ive ever gotten is from tags of people reblogging and sharing my stuff and that encourages me to keep making more content and that people are enjoying this thing i do in my free time that takes hours, so i’ll continue to do it

Today I Learned

can you explain the similarities and differences between autism and Aspergers? I know that there are a few things that are similar but I'm not 100% sure and Google just confuse me.

Aspergers is no longer appart of the DSM.

What originally was going on when people were getting the diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome (I was one of them) is that it was supposed to be a less “severe form of autism”. Basically, you understand things a little better socially and overall that type of autism wasn’t supposed to affect you the same way that people were saying just “autism” was supposed to.

Doctors and specialist in the field finally came together said, “You know what this is so dysfunctional.”

Why?

Notice how when I talked about Asperger’s is a form of autism. It’s just that, they realized it’s no “form” it just is autism. Just because a person has certain traits or acts a certain way of them doesn’t discount them from being autistic. Due to the tags they tried to put autism in it made things all the more impossible to decipher. No one autistic person is the same with who we are.

People weren’t getting appropriate services and treated poorly.

Many people were getting excluded from services and accommodations they needed because of it. If you were someone who has a high level of needs then you might be excluded from regular ed classes or events. If you were a person with mid to low tier needs you might not get the appropriate accommodations because you were thought to “cope” with things better. It became very exclusionist amongst the nonmedical community too and the autism community (morse so with the warrior parents and abelists) and still is like that unfortunately now in a lot of places.

There are some doctors and specialists that still diagnosis with “Aspergers” to explain how you are. But really you would get filled under something called ASD1 now.

To this day there are still people who do like to be under the term “Aspegers” or Aspie for their own personal reasons.
