Thanks to you…
I’m so excited about this year ahead, I have had a blast of good collaborative projects to start with and I’m feeling very connected to a community for the first time in a while. The community I’m talking about is one of my own choosing, people I live with, work with, do business with, and collaborate with on creative endeavors. Things are gelling! My karmic eggs are all turning up in the same basket at last!
Speaking of creative endeavors, I have set out to draw 365 Mandalas, some I will post online for sale as prints, others will remain unseen until the end of the year when I hope to display them all in an exhibit (somewhere to be determined!). I am really enjoying the journey of the Mandala on a daily basis. It was late last year when I taught a meditation class incorporating color, guided meditation and mandala art into a three part, three week journey. At the conclusion we all drew a mandala, basic color pencil drawing – no real focus on the outcome – just a simple enjoyment of the circular journey. What an incredible way to find your Happy Peaceful Place, I wanted to draw mandalas every day, and so I am!
After the New Year I find myself running into more and more people who want to “do” some kind of healing or healthful work and have no space or way to do it. They aren’t connecting with the people who may be seeking this or even know what it is. People seem exasperated when they ask me “don’t you have an office”, “how do you do your work”? My answer is, I am doing my work right here, right now.
I need some help expanding the meditation and art programs into more community areas. I need some help grounding this so that more people can participate as teachers and students. I have started a GoFundMe donation page as a way to receive this help. Crowd Funding, if you will…
Please read through the page and if you can help, please do. If you can help in ways I have not outlined, please email me and tell me about it. I am beginning these programs in gratitude for all that has already come my way and as a way to continue the flow and allow others who want to teach or lead to have venues to do so and people to reach. For those of you who want more spaces and places offering this, that too will be addressed, to provide meditation for everyone. I’m calling this expansion Meditation for Everyone.
Support Meditation for Everyone.
I am starting a regular mail newsletter to go along with this expansion – if you want on that list please send me your regular mailing address ([email protected]) This newsletter will feature other voices, besides mine, other teachers, students and people on this path that are right there alongside you.
To be continued!
Winter solstice planting the seeds of 2013…
In January 2012 I sat down to honor what I was able to accomplish after putting meditation as the priority – with meditation I did everything, everything stemmed from meditation. I was amazed and looked forward with this list of what I’d set out to accomplish in 2012. The list was long and I’m content with what was accomplished, which explains my need for rest and retreat at this time of year! Two of the things I’m very proud of being part of are:
EMAG receiving 501(C)(3) status and funding future community projects. (now DBA as Agua Fria Community Artists a 501(c)(3) organization)
American Art Therapy Association Conference in Savannah, Georgia. (attendance)
Additionally, writing for West Valley Health and Living through July put me in touch with top level organizers and innovators, the conversations helped affirm my experiences and guide my choices the rest of this year. My relationships with local business owners took on new meanings too this year. It all began to “add up” into the sum total of a very busy fall and winter. The transformative summer lead to the productive harvest in fall.
I restructured my business model with a new focus on creativity. I realized at the American Art Therapy Conference that most of what I was teaching, the ability to tap into this “source” had to do with creativity… yes, meditation and creativity are one and the same pathway. With this shift in my own perception of how I was going about things, I began doing business as “A Zen Creative” adding in creative services such as writing, web and graphic design, mobile web design, and a variety of creative business and marketing consultations. I continued to teach meditation and added in creativity with art and color (using the frequency of geometry and color as a way to relate to subtle energies). This is an ongoing process for my business as I explore ways to present the services I would like to render as valuable to the community and to the community of business owners as well. You will see less and less of the Arizona Energy Wellness branding and marketing going forward as I shift into the "creative" focus.
I found success in teaching an Intro to Drawing class in which I subtly combined instruction that allowed the learner to notice when they were using either the right or left side of the brain and to strengthen the weaker “side” all while learning the basics of drawing. I developed a coursework on mandala drawing too. I am excited to be a “guest artist” for the second time at Painting 4 Fun, Dianne Gibson’s business here in Surprise on January 4th 2013. I love painting with people and seeing them tap into their own creativity – it really is FUN! We had a lot of fun during my first “guest artist” spot over the summer.
So what’s on the list for 2013?
· Looking for commercial space to lease an office.
· Finishing my walking mobile labyrinth painting.
· Designing a retreat.
· Co-Organizing a co-operative workshop with “spiritual artists” who are teachers with Barbara Love Newport.
· Co-organizing a “meet-up” called Internet Marketeers with Rich Harbeson.
· Begin a new series of paintings.
· Publish two books: Waking Up To Restorative Sleep and 20’s.
· Promote Daily Random Reminders at local and regional book fairs.
· Assist my clients’ business to grow as my own business grows.
All this and more… thank you for sharing this wonderful journey. Wishing you all a safe and happy end of 2012.

Thank you...
Gratitude is a daily practice and something I begin every day with. I’d like to dedicate this blog post to my experience of gratitude and share some of my practice with you. With thanksgiving, we are in a state of grace and open to receive whatever it is we need when it inevitably arrives. These thanksgivings can come upon you during any moment of the day, not only when you are actively being grateful for all you have been given or asking for something that you need.
From my perspective thanks-giving is something we do quite naturally when we are experiencing from the here and now. Open, expanding our energies outward, we connect to everything. We naturally see connection (rather than separation). We naturally rest in our awareness (rather than pushing towards an end). We are generous (rather than hoarding). We are kind (rather than mean-spirited). We want the best for all for all time (rather than just the best for only ourselves at any given moment in time).
Gratitude is the key to this flow, in my opinion. Gratitude is the WD40 of life… when things get sticky, clingy, closed tight - - practice more gratitude. With thanks-giving, nature’s balance resumes.
During every Walking Meditation, I begin with gratitude practice of “I am grateful to be able to breathe” and “I am grateful to be able to walk”. If you’ve ever been unable to do either of these everyday activities you can appreciate the miracles they are. Walking and breathing are easy to practice with as most people do both, it’s natural to feel grateful for these simple everyday functions when you imagine your life without them. This is a good place to start to FEEL gratitude. From here, you can expand your feeling of gratitude toward things, people, health, wealth and all that we are benefitted with here on Earth.
During writing Daily Random Reminders with Co-Author Kristine Van Hook, I became aware of how gratitude when shared with another (or others), is more powerful, impactful, multiplied. Kris’ gratitude impacted me, I felt it and it enabled my own feelings of gratitude. Whatever you are grateful for, try sharing it with someone, Facebook it, write it down on a post it note and place it somewhere you’ll see it throughout the day. Even sharing it again with yourself at a later time will evoke the gratitude energy!
Thank you all for coming along on my wild journey, this year has been really great and it was made possible by all of you. You’re awesome! I’m expanding my Energy Wellness services in the coming New Year to include workshops and new classes on subtle energy and creativity. I’m giving thanks for this constant flow of ideas and the near immediate manifestation with gratitude. To the wonderful people who come forward to work with me, who ask me to participate, who give me opportunities, I say yes, and thank you!
How cool is this!?
Being Happy in the Midst of Change.
This fall has brought sweeping changes into my life both personally and professionally. The harvest is bountiful although the pruning of the summer months was long and hard. The changes that have occurred felt to me like losses. I try not to take things personally in business and in general, everyone has to do what they need to do and make choices based on their own best judgment.
Three major areas of change occurred. The first was one I initiated by taking away the strict focus on health and wellness and re-scoping Arizona Energy Wellness with a new broader focus on creativity. In doing so, I have stopped writing for West Valley Health and Living Magazine, something I have received far reaching benefits and recognition for and I will miss my close association with this publication.
Next was a re-branding of EMAG the non-profit community art group I’m involved with as a Board Member. Another round of paperwork with the Arizona Corp. Commission and we are now DBA – Agua Fria Community Artists or AFCA. A restructuring of the Board of Directors occurred as well. It’s difficult when you chose to part ways with people or circumstances - sometimes you must move on.
And finally the loss of my Walking Meditation Program at Arrowhead Towne Center mall due to not being able to obtain a new contract with the Mall’s corporate office. This change was very challenging for me, not only did I have a solid group formed and enjoy immensely doing the weekly walk; I was disappointed there is nowhere else like the Mall to do these walks. I tried both Sun City and Sun City West’s indoor walking tracks and was met with “No” by their respective Board of Directors.
I was open to some of these changes, others I was absolutely heartbroken over. I really like everything and everyone I invest my time and energy in. Sometimes things end and it’s shocking, difficult and final!
Thankfully, I am open to change and have my own understanding of our cyclic nature – we change the Earth changes, seasons are experienced. This brings me back to change… I feel more honest now these changes have happened; I’m more settled and centered. The intention going into 2012, for me, was to bring clarity and grounding into what I’m doing. I’m harvesting this clarity and grounding right now. The choice to re-focus on creativity has allowed me to integrate web design and graphic design services back into my business. I’ve found there is a need for these services all around me from small business owners to artists and authors.
We’re faced with what’s not working. We are challenged to change, yet we keep looking for ways to make it work again – the way it did. We are the ones, the creators of our future outcomes. Being open to change, we are open to the possibilities that only exist when we engage our creative aspects. I’m so grateful to be where I am right now! With creativity we can re-invent, re-create, and MORPH into now… brand new.
I’ve told you want has changed and now I’ll let you in on what’s emerging brand new:
· EMAG has re-branded as Agua Fria Community Artists – AFCA. The newly restructured Board of Directors is working on partnerships with local artist, non-profits, and businesses. We are impacting a larger geographical area and bringing opportunities to serve and promote art.
· I am teaching many meditation and art classes this fall. Check out my calendar for the complete listing and registration info: https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=buzznell%40mindspring.com&ctz=America/Phoenix
· I’m writing my second book “Waking Up to Restorative Sleep”, I expect this companion to Daily Random Reminders to be released January 2013.
There are wonderful, beautiful people approaching me about all kinds of creative collaborations too and I am saying YES. J
Playing Well With Others: Collaboration instead of competition
Let’s start by defining collaboration and competition. Collaboration: something created by working jointly with another or others. Competition: rivalry, struggle, a contest in which a winner is selected from among two or more contestants, a series of games where by a winner is chosen. Just by reading these definitions you can begin to see that competition has its roots in limitation, struggle, a narrow view of resources and outcomes; while collaboration has its roots in collective connection and an expansive view of resources and mutual outcomes. 1. Collaboration benefits everyone – it calls people to engage and realize they are connected to one another. Competition benefits one “team” or individual, the winner. 2. Collaboration creates relationships that are based on mutual benefit. Competition creates relationships based on winning or outcomes (goals) and is one-sided. 3. Collaboration invites conversation, sharing and openness. Competition invites secret keeping and closed door, often behind the back of competitors’ conversations. 4. Collaboration enables problem solving and brainstorming of concepts, solutions are shared amongst the community. Competition doesn’t enable problem solving outside of the chosen “team” or individual. This is not an efficient or effective way to problem solve or brainstorm concepts and lends to the perception of limited resources. 5. Collaboration creates unlimited resources through sharing and networking. Competition creates limited available resources through exclusive networking practices. Seeing each other as partners rather than competition expands the field of possibility for everyone. This is how to create win/win outcomes every time. We can make a conscious choice to abandon competition and create a conversation, develop a relationship, bridge a conflict through collaboration. Creating success in whatever you chose begins with making the choice to collaborate rather than compete.
AATA Conference 2012
“Art allows what is possible, rather than what has been lost.”
Wow, the week went by so fast, so many interesting people and workshops - it all becomes a blur without great notes! Good thing I had my pencil (freely supplied by Blick) and my notepad handy. The American Art Therapy Association graciously allowed me to join as an Associate Member last year; this is a career path I have been exploring for over ten years. There is always something stopping me from fully pursuing this profession. I felt honored to stick my toes into the deep water at this conference with the support of the West Valley Arts Council's Individual Artist Grant. I'm grateful for having this opportunity and want to pass along the details of my experience for others who may also be venturing into these areas. I have come away with a better definition of my life’s work and how I’m really in the best position to do what I do best right here in my community and right now without delay.
The workshops and speakers were excellent, well versed in therapy (not so much in art) - the inner process, psychological process. Art becomes the vehicle inward (of course!) and through whatever artistic medium is chosen; therapy is delivered rather effortlessly.
As an Artist, I was fascinated at the free association and symbolism aspect of art therapy. There seemed, to this non-art therapist (I am uneducated and unlicensed in this field, let’s get that clearly stated) emphasis on process over product. The lack of “instructing” in technique leads the participant/client into some really wild places with the art materials, quite naturally. So to associate or attach some symbolism to the outcome or product or even the process of creating it seemed a bit assumptive for me - a non-therapist.
The art product, the results of the therapy session, are not viewed in ways an “artist” or “art consumer” would…rather the product is analyzed from a psychological perspective as a window into the inner world of the therapy client. Art therapy provides an intimate view inward with the use of association and symbolism based in psychology. The product associated with a psychosis or _insert your psychological state here_ could be because the participants/clients have not been instructed on how to handle the art materials/media and not because they have a psychosis… just saying. I approach art with people (as an instructor in community settings) as someone who knows how to use the "tools". I don't instruct people in self expression so much as I do how to use the "tools" in order to express themselves. I may have missed the artistic point of this therapy.
Bringing the inner world into harmony with the external world or vice versa through art is amazing. All engagement in art does this naturally - only some Artists are aware of this. Art is a present moment activity. It’s worth the effort to make these connections as an Artist and human being. It’s an individual process, often a life-long process finding our authentic voice. Our art is telling the story of our life, as Artists. Yes, some of it will be downright ugly! It will be our legacy and it is our livelihood. The approach to expression is creative and alive; the dialog between inner (imagination) and external (solidity/reality) is fluid for an artist. Art is naturally therapeutic in its dynamic and fluid nature.
No photography was allowed within the conference area. There is an ethical policy in place forbidding such photography. So I have no photos from the conference within the conference area. However, I will attach my own creations and will not elaborate on what they “mean” or what process I underwent to create these. I’ll leave that up to you, the viewer.
Being an Artist and a passionate advocate for creative living, I have come to the realization that Art Therapists (AT) wears the THERAPIST hat where art is concerned. It’s all about the psychological processing involved, before, during and after the creation process. Art Therapy is based in psychology and comes with a lot of rules that aren’t related to art - this is because AT work with vulnerable populations and also because there is a system of reporting and accountability in place. Art Therapists go to school for a long time to become licensed and degreed. Artists are sometimes naturally born and raised (like me). Therapists aren’t. They’re conditioned and trained to perform within settings with specific populations of people. These are things I find to be in conflict to facilitating an artistic process (noted: AT is NOT an artistic process, AT is facilitating a psychological process through the use of various mediums of art). Artists don’t have the need to categorize people or places, or define and label psychological states, nor do they require a license. Artists work with what they have available.
As an Artist, it’s all about the artistic flow and process of creating a PRODUCT - it can be abstract, but there is some meaning there (sometimes only for the Artist)… I found little artistic value in my art therapy products - much less than in my own true art forms which people purchase and I teach from.
Ironically, one of my clients called me during the second day of the conference. I was happy to hear from her, she is 81 years old and interested in meeting others who practice meditation. I explained to her where I was and what I was doing and that I’d return in a week and would connect her with a small network of people she could meet with and practice meditation. She spoke with me briefly about finding “the purpose in my life” and she was concerned that she was running out of time to find this purpose. I assured her that as long as she was still breathing there was time. We hung up and I went to my next workshop. A quote was presented before the speaker delivered her topic Art Therapy in Hospice - that quote reminded me of my client who was alone , unattached to another human being (having no family nearby, no spouse and being home bound for the summer due to heat exhaustion).
Man transcends himself either toward another human being or toward meaning. Viktor E. Frankl, M.D., Ph.D.
My client was searching for meaning and transcendence - yes, I’m in the right place, right time, doing the right thing.
What does it all MEAN?
It means I’m an artist - I prefer nature's psychotherapy in the form of meditation and that means everything! Art Therapy has its place and is valuable to those who truly need what it offers to both therapists and clients. Art Therapists do miraculous work within the realm of psychotherapy. In our modern society, in the middle of the transition into post-industrial society - I can think of no better therapy for those in need than Art Therapy - - - and if you want to express yourself through art, find some relief from stress and HAVE FUN … then look me up, take one of my classes or have a one on one session. Live a creative life and be happy!

Due to the restriction...
Due to the restriction of no photography at the (American Art Therapy Association) convention, I won't be posting photos however, I'm writing a photo-less post about the experience I had (others' mileage will vary).
Over all a very good experience, albeit, I am not a psychologist - 100% artist here. I have studied psychology quite extensively and was able to grasp the myriad concepts presented. With this understanding, this conference has been a defining moment for me professionally - - and artistically.
More soon... until then, enjoy the view!
Beth Cornell.
Through the practice of Meditation - you can become aware of your subtle energy.
Through the practice of Creative Arts - you can learn how color frequency and geometric shapes influence the environment and subtle energy fields.
At the AATA conference, finding mindfulness practice has filtered into Art Therapy, however, they're missing out on some good stuff.. subtle energy! Here is my contribution to begin the conversation...
