people don’t enjoy shipping anymore. the point of shipping isn’t the catharsis of watching them kiss onscreen, it’s grabbing the characters and mashing their faces together like you’re five years old playing Barbie in your room again. it’s to take one moment of eye contact in canon and read that over and over and over again with twenty different writers’ interpretations of the characters internal monologues if they were in love. it’s to see the characters interact and cheer because you know that’s another moment to add to your list of canon compliant fic ideas. you’re stressing yourself out, this is supposed to be fun!
Lyle and Quaritch friends with benefits. Lyle feeling so extremely jealous when he finds out that Quaritch got Paz pregnant He doesn't even know why, it ain't like he's got feelings for Quaritch or anything.
Though the one time he woke up next to him, naked and sticky from the night before he felt his throat tighten at the view of a peacefully asleep Quaritch.
They die, he thinks of Quaritch at last. How raw his voice would get if only he hit the right spots in him. How once he'd got him do tear up because too much and not enough.

He actually looks into mating. Throws the data pad into the next wall a second later. They fuck that night again. Quaritch talks about how much he hates Sully, Lyle doesn't care. He's there for Quaritch. Would follow him into death - again.
They kill na'vi, one guy from the RDA makes a comment about some faggots, cause there had been a gay pair. Lyle wants to kill him.
Spider, that annoying ass boy sees the anger in his eyes, practically corners him, despite him being their hostage. Tells him about Na'vi not being as intolerant as humans still seem to be.
Lyle can't stop thinking about it. The next time he doesn't kill any Na'vi. They fuck again that night. Quaritch lingers again, hands caressing, pulling Lyle in. Intertwining their tails. Lyle thinks about mating again. He flees.
He finds the data Augustine had collected, reads through them. Finds gay mates in her documents, sees what information she's gathered about that kind of stuff.
They kill, he doesn't. He watches, holds spider secure that crazy boy. Quaritch seeks him out again that night. He mindlessly mentions Na'vi having no homophobia whatsoever. Quaritch grunts. They're both used to it. Being marine has no place for being gay. Had never been, will never be. Over a hundred years and they still call them fags without restraint.
They fuck, quaritch intertwines their tails again. He thinks of what he'd read about mating.
He watches Quaritch laugh from his belly as he flies his ikran when they go patrolling. The race each other, playfully. Lyle feels the pull towards nature more and more with each day. Wonders if Quaritch does the same.
He disappears for hours, comes back without saying a word. Does that again. He watches nature, watches Pandora, sees the animals and it feels so wrong to do all that.
They fuck, he tells quaritch. Lyle doesn't want to do all that anymore. He dgaf about Sully anymore. He's back alive, being Na'vi do much more than human. The nature, the strength, everything is so much better. Sully can go fuck himself.
Quaritch attacks. Lyle stays at his side, sees Sully's kids. He doesn't kill anyone. He can't. It feels so wrong to do all that. He can't understand why he feels like that all of a sudden.
Quaritch punches him for not fighting. He spits out blood. They battle each other while a whole other battle takes place. He lets quaritch punch him again. Lyle grunts out that this isn't their nature. Quaritch just has to see.
The Sully children watch, spider besides then.
Lyle wants quaritch, wants this world to be theirs. Not how humans want it. He wants to live, wants to experience. He was watching the world day after day, flew his ikran, read so much. His instincts call to him.
Sully could kill Quaritch, has him at his gun point. Begs him to see so he doesn't has to do this. Spider watching them. Sully doesn't want to kill in front of the boy. Lyle doesn't want to loose Quaritch.
Quaritch gives in, not wanting to die again. Eyes on Lyle he goes limp on the floor under Sully's foot. The humans nearly all dead. Lyle doesn't care. They're the reason he's there, but aren't his destination.
Sully let's them go, takes their guns. They fly far until they land again. Lyle helping quaritch with his wounds. Too soft with his hands. He intertwines their tails, mumbles quiet words. Thinks about mating, knows it is love.
Quaritch watches him, lets him do all that, sighs defeated. Looks at his Kuru, drops it. Kisses Lyle, can't bring himself to do it with lust cause that's not what he truly wants. Everything hurts and somehow he still pulls him in his lap. Somewhere in the woods, just them.
Lyle is first to pull his Kuru to the front, quaritch does the same on instinct. When tsaheylu is made they shudder. They both feel it, they see. They make love, slow and tender.
No matter how hard he tries Quaritch wouldn't be able to regret. Lyle is too far gone to care.
