The rats are officially a year old! Their gotcha day is 07/28! Not every baby wanted to take pictures while we were having cuddle time but everyone is doing well!! All the babies are so big now!

Picture is Cosmo, then Whiskey next to Mojito. Cosmo again, peeking from behind the pillow. And mister Soju practicing balancing while he explores.

These 3 like to stay close, always on me or right by my side, grooming and sniffing and tussling together. Mojito, Saké, and Kahlua prefer to hang out under the covers.

I’m getting sick and tired of my mother asking me questions about animal care and then her following it up with,

“yeah but they don’t really need that. When I was a kid my friend/cousin/someone I knew used to keep ____ and didn’t do any of that.”

And then I try to explain to her the difference between “surviving” and “thriving” and she tries to tell me her friend kept tons of axolotls in a tiny tank with no chiller for years and they were babied and soooo fine don’t even worry!

Or she kept guppies in a vase on her table and they were obviously thriving because they kept having babies over and over.

Or when I tell her no birds are a “beginner” pet but if I had to recommend a bird I’d recommend a pigeon and she went on an entire rant about how parakeets are super easy pets and you don’t need to recall or flight train them and they’re a beginner bird.

Why ask me if you genuinely don’t want to listen to anything I say.

#I need her to accept that her childhood friends #and herself #had subpar animal care #standards change #you simply did not meet today’s standard #and cannot apply past experience to today’s care #I get it’s tough to realize you didn’t properly care for an animal #or that people around you ALSO didn’t care properly for their animals #especially as someone who’s a proclaimed animal lover #but I genuinely do not want to talk to her about animal care standards #if she’s just going to keep bringing up her own subpar care #mine

The shrimps love this plant specifically so much. They hop around from leaf to leaf and the babies congregate near the roots.

Our friend the snail is meant to be eating the 100s of tiny bladder snails everywhere but he’s kind of greedy and likes to come out for micro-pellet dust for the shrimps instead. Otherwise he’s a fan of burying himself near the filter and scooting up the back wall.
