Is there specific dimensions for the illustration that would best fit the size of the printed zine? :)
We do not have specific dimensions for submissions!
Artists can submit some of their favorite pieces from their portfolio, and then based on your artistic style, we will be able to accept and place you with the right content. Dimensions for printed illustrations will be decided upon with each artist individually to ensure they have the best layout.
But, to give you a sense of what the printed zine will look like: classes, races, and other character-driven art will have something close to a full page spread. Monster and spells might have half or quarter page spreads, depending on what is needed. Any relevant locations or big action illustrations could get a full two-page spread, if we have the content space for it.
All exact sizes are flexible, and will be decided as we collect our final pieces for the zine.

Hi ! I’m planning on submitting a character concept/ home brew race (the character is of a race that I created) so I was wondering if I should provide information about the character as an individual as well as information about the home brew race itself? :) if so would should I include for the character profile? ^w^
Great question!
If you already have a character that is the race, then you are more than welcome to pitch the character themselves with your submission. On our website, in the written submissions page, we have a link to our application templates. We do ask that you fill out all of the information we ask for (which is applicable to your content), but if you wanted to customize the intro section of your homebrewed race to weave a little narrative for your character specifically, that is fine! You are also welcome to include an extra bonus section at the end of your submission, giving us some more flavor about your character.
At Better Gnomes & Goblins, we NEVER turn down more information! While we cannot guarantee that all additional content will be published, if we have the chance to get to know your character better, it will not only give us more of your material to work with when publishing new races, but also give any artist illustrating your work stronger reference materials to be inspired by.
Also, if you happen to already have made illustrations of your character that you want to submit as well, then you can submit them both! We ask that you then fill out an artist submission form as well, and note that you are applying with written content as well, in the appropriate section on the form.

hi, this is such a cool zine idea! i just have a couple of questions--does the content submitted have to be strictly about homebrew? for instance, i saw that the artist submissions are looking for character art and i have a new sorcerer that i really want to draw (though i guess i did do a little homebrewing on how her magic works for specific spells). also, when is the submission deadline? thanks!
Thanks so much for reaching out! I’m sorry that we couldn’t answer your question sooner, but we appreciate your patience while our dedicated staff gets some sleep, haha--
I’ll address your questions in two main bullet points, to make it easier for you.
Better Gnomes & Goblins aims to provide new, playable content for all of our readers. This is why we are featuring 5e fantasy homebrew content for our first issue. We want to have new classes, races, spells, and anything else that real GMs and players can use in their own games. Some of our artists have written content to go along with their original drawings, and some do not, which means that we will be matching artists up to written submissions when need be, providing illustrations of the new game content we are collecting. It sounds like your character might have some original spells, though? If you want to specifically feature your sorcerer, then you can always submit your portfolio and if you are accepted, you can let us know that you want to draw her specifically. But, if you do have original homebrew spells and mechanics for her, then I highly recommend submitting both your artistic portfolio AND your written spell content! That way, if we accept them both you will know exactly how you’ll be drawing your lovely sorcerer in action!
