A Summary from my Survey
Eighty percent of the women that took the survey were eighteen and the other twenty percent were nineteen. The most popular social media website was Instagram with 91% of the women reporting using it. The majority of the women that used Instagram spent between less than thirty minutes (35%) and one hour (38%). A shocking sixty-seven percent of the women said that social media has impacted their self-esteems negatively at least once in the past week. Fifty-nine percent of women said they compared themselves to another social media user at least once in the past week.

Social Comparison
There are specifically two kinds of social comparison: Upward and Downward. Upward social comparison is defined as comparing ourselves to people we think are better than us while downward social comparison compares ourselves to people we believe we are better than. This theory is called the Social Comparison theory and was created by psychologist Leon Festinger.Â
The Eating Disorder Foundation is a non-profit resource center to the general public and the medical community in the collective effort to prevent and eliminate eating disorders. The Foundation engages in education and advocacy initiatives together with timely support and help in identifying appropriate treatment options for individuals with eating disorders and their families. If you know someone or are struggling with an eating disorder please let the resources on this website help you and know that you are not alone.
No matter what you’re going through, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it may seem hard to get to it but you can do it and you’ll find the positive side of things

Psychologists at the University of Houston and Palo Alto University confirm an association between Facebook use and depressive symptoms:
In the 1950s, the psychologist Leon Festinger popularized social-comparison theory. He argued that people have innate tendencies to track our progress and assess our self-worth by comparing ourselves to other people. That social comparison leads to feelings of insignificance and insecurity. Research has since found that making social comparisons, especially “upward” comparisons (to people we deem above us, to whom we feel inferior, for whatever reason) are associated with negative health outcomes like depressive symptoms and decreased self-esteem. Because Facebook tends to serve as an onslaught of idealized existences—babies, engagement rings, graduations, new jobs—it invites upward social comparison at a rate that can make “real life” feel like a modesty festival.
Be confident. Too many days are wasted comparing ourselves to others and wishing to be something we aren’t. Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it is only only when you accept everything you are – and aren’t – that you will truly succeed.

Social Media and Eating Disorders
Social media amplifies eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia by, “[o]bessions, comparisons and competition -- with a constant stream of imagery and camaraderie-building, and how easy it is to weak and gain approval.” (Qtd. by Claire Mysko -- a representative for the National Eating Disorders Association.)Â
Depression Awareness is another link to go to if you or someone you love is dealing with depression
