“I don’t want another drink.”
“Hush, mo ghràdh. Just drink up and pretend we’re in Prague.”
“1901?”
“1901, baby. Waiter!”
“You are incorrigible.”
“Thank you.”
They’re ambushed. The element of surprise is in the enemy’s favor, but Arthur and Declan have had thousands of years of fighting experience and they’re able to level the playing field fairly quickly. As always the two of them are in sync, covering each other’s backs, handing off weapons, and taking down their opponents quickly and efficiently.
There’s only a handful left when Arthur gets in a one-on-one scuffle that brings him across the room, and Declan is preoccupied until he sees Arthur land on his back. There’s another man on top of him, and he shoves a gun in Arthur’s mouth and pulls the trigger.

Arthur isn’t moving.
It’s like time has stopped. Arthur always heals quicker than this, and Declan…he can’t think anything except this can’t be the last time this can’t be the last time no no no please it’s not enough time I need him I need him I need–
Everything is a blur. A course of adrenaline, pure rage and heartbreak at even a whisper of the possibility that Arthur is gone for good is more than enough for Declan to take out the remaining soldiers. He leaves the one who shot Arthur for last.
“You shot Arthur,” Declan whispers, voice eerily calm. “You shouldn’t have done that.” He knocks the man over with a rifle, picks him up to slam him into the wall over and over again, his head creating a nice dent, and finally dropping him to the floor. Declan is in the middle of bashing the man’s face in, and he’s long dead by now, when he feels a touch at the back of his neck. Whirling around, covered in blood and sweat and tears, Declan finds Arthur standing over him.
“Dec-” Arthur can’t even get a word out before Declan has grabbed him, hands on his face like he’s porcelain, touching him all over to make sure he’s healing properly, that he’s real.
“I thought-” Declan chokes out, pulling him in for an embrace.
“Don’t,” Arthur replies, pressing their foreheads together. “I’m right here.” He leans down, pressing a soft kiss to Declan’s mouth. “Not my time.”
“Dec...? Dec!”
“I’m here, m'eudail.”
“Why are you dressed? And why aren’t you here with me?”
“Because we have work to do.”
“Then why—”
“Because you looked peaceful. It’s my favourite look on you, especially when you’re not wearing anything else.”
“Don’t do that.”
“I don’t understand your meaning.”
“You know exactly what you’re doing, Art. Don’t play coy.”
“What is it I’m supposedly doing?”
“Trying to seduce me.”
“Why would I do that? ... Out of curiosity, would it be working?”
“As if you even have to ask.”
