It was a historic occasion, one that was happening a hundred years too late, but it was happening. Sachin was excited about this test, perhaps more than he had been for test cricket in a long time. Smriti and Shefali were both playing, and he was rather excited to see them. He had hoped Pratika would play as well; she seemed so well suited for the format, and she reminded him so much of Rahul with her mannerisms. But Pratika was injured and wasn’t playing.

He had been asked to chat to the girls on day 3, just at the start of their second innings. Smriti and Shefali had both gotten a loving earful about playing rash shots before, and he didn’t want to overdo it. He congratulated Kranti on becoming the first woman on the honors board. He chatted to a few other players about their performances.

He was talking to Harman about the pitch when he felt his phone ping twice in his pocket. He excused himself after a minute; it was likely Rahul on the phone, whom he wanted to talk to anyway. Last night was the night of the ICC Annual Conference, and Sourav had been inducted into the Hall of Fame, way too late per Sachin, but he was told that he was biased (with which he vehemently disagreed).

“Who are you talking to?” Smriti asked him with that innocent smile. “Rahul, I’m texting,” Sachin said. He opened Rahul’s chat and started reading last night’s conversation about the annual conference. “Dada got inducted into the Hall of Fame na?” She asked. Sachin smiled, “Yeah, he did.” A certain pride filled Sachin’s chest as he said it. Sourav had taken an enormous number of hard decisions in his time as captain, and he had gotten a lot of slack for it. For it all to be acknowledged formally made Sachin happy for Sourav, even if Sourav didn’t care about any of it.

Shefali poked Smriti in the elbow and nodded towards Sachin. Smriti giggled slightly at Sachin smiling brightly at the mere mention of Sourav. She poked him in the arm. He blinked and turned his gaze to them. They burst out laughing, and Sachin couldn’t help but giggle along with them. “Don’t you have to warm up or what?” Sachin said, finally reading the text Rahul sent him.

His eyebrows raised, and his breath hitched at the picture. It was Sourav, in their apartment in Mumbai- his eyes were dazed, pupils blown up. The yellow lighting cast a halo-like glow around his face, his brown eyes shining so brightly they looked golden in the moment. He looked soft. His hair was mussed up, like Rahul had been grabbing it. His lips were saccharin red, the bottom one jutting out slightly as his mouth hung slightly open, gasping for air, likely. ‘Our Hall of Famer <3,’ Rahul had captioned it.

Sachin blinked hard.

Deep breath in, deep breath out.

Smriti stared at him with a concerned look. “All good?” She asked, slightly worried. “Why are you taking deep breaths?” Because I want to kiss Sourav until he can’t remember his name. He cannot say that. He cleared his throat. “Nothing.” He said. “What was in that photo?” Smriti asked. “Nothing,” Sachin said again, pulling the phone close to his chest. Smriti pouted at him, “Show naa!! Please.” Sachin shook his head. “It’s nothing re,” he said. Smriti huffed, feeling slightly defeated. She turned to Harman to lament. Sachin sighed in relief and looked at the photo again. Sourav looked ethereal. Sachin ran his thumb over Sourav’s cheek on the phone. All he wanted to do was pull Sourav’s hair and claim those lips…”MMrphhh-” He heard a loud snort at his shoulder. He immediately turned back, horrified.

It was Shefali, trying very hard not to laugh but hiding her face in her hands. “Shefali.” He stated, blinking hard. She tried to compose herself by peeking through her fingers, but immediately burst into giggles. Sachin was blushing. Shefali noted when she peeked again before laughing about the blush. “Shefali Verma,” Sachin said, seriously. She tore her face from her hands and looked at him finally. She was still grinning ear to ear. “Not a word to anyone,” Sachin said. He had meant to look threatening, but the blush was making it hard. Shefali nodded. “You will not tell anyone,” he said. Shefali nodded again, letting a laugh slip. “Not even Renuka,” Sachin told her for good measure. Shefali snorted, “I will not say.”

Sachin huffed, rubbing a palm over his face. He saw Shefali go up to Smriti. “What was in the photo?” He heard Smriti ask. He pretended to look at his phone. Shefali looked at him and controlled her laughter. “Don’t worry about it.” Smriti huffed, “Shaifu!!” Shefali shook her head again, saying something Sachin didn’t hear.

“Rahul, you-” Sachin took a deep breath. He looked up to the sky for guidance, and when no one answered his calls, he closed his eyes for a minute. He opened them and was greeted with the Lord’s balcony of all things.
