It’s gardening season! In Vermont, in February. We had -22F here this morning. But onions, shallots and leeks are cozy under lights in the basement, at 14 days today. #growingonions #homegardening #februarygarden #vermontgardening — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2Hr8w7h
Sourdough sandwich loaf. Proud of this one, best to date ☺️ #sourdoughbread #sourdoughsandwich #homemadebread #schoollunch #luckykids — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2t03F9H
Dark days mean baking, and today was sourdough, my first loaf in a few weeks. It’s fresh out of the oven and I can hear it cracking and popping faintly as it cools. And the wonderful aroma that’s filling the house... #sourdoughbread #homemadebread #homebaking #winterbaking — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2QsGc8R
Leeks, from seed!! 🌱 This was an experiment, and I admit I didn’t have great expectations. I started seeds in the basement around the first of February. Much later, after watching scrawny plants for half the summer, I sort of forgot about them. Then, surprise, here are some fat, happy leeks! I think I’ll try this again next year. 🌱 #leeks #leeksfromseed #gardenleeks #growyourownfood #vermontgarden #organicgardening — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2MFKJmu
Frost warning tonight, the first real one this season. My very first pepper was almost ripe! Many weeks late according to conventional wisdom, but it’s been an odd summer. #sweetpepper #jimmynardello #gardenpeppers #vermontgarden — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2o0HuxA
Weekend sourdough. This one is an overnight recipe, which agrees with my weekend schedule! #sourdough #sourdoughbread #weekendsourdough #homemadebread — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/31Lwhzq
I wait all summer for green beans...today, they’re ready. ALL of them. 😬 #greenbeans #growingbeans #septembersummer #vermontsummer #vtsummer — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2I9xh8O
I put the zucchini in a garden bed near the picnic table because I know zucchini is not a vining plant. What a cute pumpkin I have growing from that zucchini seed packet 😂 #seedswap #gardenzucchini #gardenpumpkins #vermontgarden #organicgardener — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2Zun4yC
Swallowtail babies 💛 pleased to host these beauties on my dill plants! #swallowtail #swallowtailbutterfly #swallowtailcaterpillar #vermontbutterflies #vermontgarden #organicgarden — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2zqv6ci
Red Sails, part of my second planting of lettuce, ready in a week or so! I try really hard to remember my succession planting plans (but don’t always succeed) This year: so far, so good. I’ll do a third seeding when this bunch is ready to eat. #redsails #gardenlettuce #growinglettuce #growyourownsalad #vermontgarden #organicgardening — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2OIMUtC
Garlic harvest 2019! This one is German Extra Hardy, with the biggest cloves and mildest flavor of the varieties I grow. This and German Red have proved to be foolproof and dependable. A new one for me this year: Nootka Rose, softneck and therefore less hardy, made it through the winter just fine but bulbs are smaller. I gave away all the scapes this year. Would love advice on how to use them, as my attempts at sautéing and pesto have turned out less than delicious. 😬 #growinggarlic #garlicgarden #garlicscapes #garlicharvest #vermontgarden — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2Kiu2xx
I’m doing a few things differently in the garden this year. Some of my experiments turn out well, others...anyway, this year has been a trial for no-dig, extra mulch, and leaving spent plants to flower. I usually pull my greens as soon as they’re ready to bolt. So, I’ve not had the pleasure of seeing these plants through their life cycle. Who know what this one is? 😊🌱 — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2SLy447
Scarlet runner beans about to burst into flower. Fat long pink/purple mottled bean pods will follow. If you’re looking for a climbing ornamental or a fun vegetable for kids to grow, this is a good one! #scarletrunnerbeans #growingbeans #growyourownfood #vermontgarden #organicgardening — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2Oe2rS0
Beans are up! I try to grow only pole beans, and they will be climbing in less than a week. Trellises are needed, and I will be recruiting 11- and 13-year old help. Many varieties planted, but not all germinated, probably due to old seed. Champions: Fortex, Kentucky Wonder, Blue Lake, Oriental Yard Long, Scarlet Runner. #growyourownfood #gardenbeans #backyardgarden #vermontgarden #growvegetables #scarletrunnerbeans — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2J8T9kv
Beans are up, trellises need to be built...a broken clavicle does not fit into my garden plan, yet here we are. For now, I can enjoy baby lettuce, arugula and kale. 🌱 — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/31TldRw
