#When Your Consumed By Love
in infinite worlds, every version of her chooses him
the infinity necklace has got to be one of the most insane things conrad has ever done. he buys it for belly before theyre even together romantically like just to say hey the concept of infinity makes me think of you :) and i think it’d be neat if you wore it around your neck every day so you thought of me forever and everyone who sees you sort of knows you have an infinite presence in your life which is me :) and this is all in reference to a conversation we had six years ago i’m sure you remember :) and then he chickens out on giving it to her (valid), tries to give it to her even after saying he doesnt want to be with her (insane), gives it to her again after theyve hit pause (okay), goes feral with self satisfaction whenever he sees her wearing it when theyre together (hot), keeps it on his calendar after theyve broken up (sad), tries to give it to her AGAIN after theyre not together (unhinged), and then somehow manages to send it to her halfway across the world on accident (jenny han my god). like conrad. my guy. no normal person would do any of this. and then the SECOND belly sees the necklace in his drawer shes like yeah i get what he means. and she’s right. truly they are soulmates.
The Summer I Turned Pretty First Episode vs. Finale
The first episode of the series ends with Belly running away from Conrad on the beach, hoping to have a different summer. She wants to change herself from the girl that would shyly pine after Conrad who she believes will never love her back. The final episode has a full circle moment where Belly runs to Conrad after realizing as much as she has grown and changed in many ways, her core inner child will always be there. And that core part of her will always love Conrad Fisher.
“First loves are important, but not as important as lasts”
I don't understand those who argue that the endgame between Belly and Conrad was "rushed" or the result of their childhood love. Beyond the fact that their conversation at Belly's house served precisely to erase this latter option and that the fact that they would end up together was built up from the first season, let's focus on the "rushed" aspect.
The point of the third season, in my opinion, was precisely to show how these two fell in love with each other again. They hadn't seen or heard from each other for years, but they were able to rebuild what was between them in a finally mature way. This is evident from the Christmas flashback but even more so in the entire episode from Conrad's POV, in which they spend an entire day getting to know each other again, talking and sharing moments and experiences... and it continues like this throughout that summer. In the finale, then, after a year, he finds her as the woman she's become, but unlike Jeremiah, he doesn't try to change her or keep her a girl.
Conrad finds confirmation of his love for her even as they've both grown and changed (hence the "if I met you again tonight, I'd still fall in love with you"), and he supports her in her ambitions and aspirations. Their entire day in Paris shows their reconnection and how they haven't stopped speaking the same language or feeling the same things, the difference is that now, unlike when they were teenagers at the beginning of this story, they are better at communicating, or finally talking about their feelings and dealing with them. Conrad loved the girl he once was, and he loves the young woman he now is. When she chooses Conrad, Bally also chooses herself because she is finally free.
Unlike Jeremiah, who didn't want her to go to Paris or told her things (cringe) like "never cut your hair" as a metaphor for not wanting her to grow, change, mature, or have any experiences outside of him and their relationship, Conrad wants exactly the opposite for Belly. Belly stays in Paris for another year after she and Conrad get back together, proving that theirs is a healthy relationship where each has their own space. That's why I'm so excited to finally see their relationship in the present time in the film; I'm sure it will be truly beautiful and satisfying.
I love how with belly and conrad in the last ep that their shared history is like a spark between them—but it's not entirely what rekindles the flame. It's seeing each other through this new lens after so much time and distance, it's seeing how the other has changed and grown. It's the way that underneath these new layers is still that sense of familiarity. It's the way that they fundamentally know each other bone deep, but now there's so much newness, so much to learn and relearn. It was falling in love all over again. Conrad telling Belly that if that night was their very first together, he'd still have fallen in love with her. That everything about himself has changed except for his love for her. Belly realizing that as much as she's changed and grown, her heart is still the same. And her heart has always wanted Conrad. It was always inevitable. They gave each other infinity.
