rewatching civil war for doomsday and like, obviously everyone has their side but this movie is just so good at making BOTH sides of the argument so layered and understandable given the people. like of course steve is very hesitant that government agencies will do what is right when given control, given his general history with the government and the fact that the very reputable shield was found to be totally infiltrated with hydra operatives- what if steve had just trusted them blindly? and then of course tony, who made the decision to stop using his weapons for bad, would be gutted by the lives lost in sokovia- in part because no one was there to keep him in check, and demand that his team be held accountable so it’s not just left up to all of them. what if this happens again? and the fact that both arguments make total sense, and could be RIGHT depending on what framework you’re viewing them with?? like ugh this movie is just amazing.

anyways i know that steve’s home life is definitely gonna get all fucked up again in doomsday. but with all the new conversations about him and peggy i am SICK and TIRED of people saying that him going back to peggy ruined his charecter arc. literally every movie post catfa focused in some way on him and peggy. flashbacks to peggy in the avengers, his whole being a man out of time and wanting to honor peggy’s real legacy at shield, not having a home and HER being his ultron vision in ultron, her death literally being a huge breaking point for him in civil war. obviously there is more to him and those movies focused on other things but like… when exactly did he stop thinking about her? just because YOU don’t like her doesn’t mean you can just brush off the massive impact she never stopped having on steve.

my roman empire is that abbey bartlet was a confident, sexy, smart, determined, world renowned surgeon who had to give up her career, watch her husband get shot, give up her medical license for keeping her husband alive, watch her husband run for reelection even though he had promised her he wouldn’t, almost lose her child to a kidnapping, get scrutinized by the media for trying to return to medicine, and watch her husband's health deteriorate in front of her, only for fans of the west wing to criticize her for being too angry and too sexy and too loud and annoyed all the time and not “first lady-like” and how abbey is a literal analogy for hillary clinton, who is brilliant and motivated and still hated by millions of people for some weird mix of reasons that boiled down to the fact that she doesn’t act the way that people want women who are married to powerful men to act. because people want women to be beautiful even when they’re going through hell and act submissive even though they’re not. because people say that they’re feminists but freak out when any relationship isn’t all about the man. That’s the same reason that people hate michelle obama for having opinions, and the reason people hate dr. biden for daring to ask people to call her dr. But I can’t say that so I say the bermuda triangle.

i know knives out and glass onion were both nominated for screenplay oscars but wake up dead man needs to WIN it holy shit this script is like one of the best i’ve ever seen

one of the things i love about all the knives out movies is how it doesn’t try too hard. and this is really why i love all of the movies i love. like. ok,

there are movies with good scripts and bad scripts, good characters and bad characters, good lighting and bad lighting, good cinematography and bad cinematography. and obviously a movie that has little substance and is trying to be deep is gonna be bad. but what gets me about a lot of modern movies is that they know they’re good and they try too hard to show you. like i loved la la land but it felt like they were shouting “look at our camera angles! look at our lighting!” and oftentimes it took me out of a movie that’s supposed to be character driven. same with oppenheimer. or like, avengers infinity war and everywhere everything all at once were really kind of shoving the script down our throat.

and it’s not like those movies’ cinematography or writing isn’t good, it’s excellent, it’s oscar worthy. but as movie quality slowly declines in many ways, a lot of the movies i’ve seen have almost become about the cinematography, or the lighting, or the writing. like rather than talk about the movie as a whole they want people to walk out of the theater and say “the sound in that movie was insane” like in la la land, the lighting and camera became a character of its own. whereas in wake up dead man there were some legendary shots, which are grand and beautiful but they felt natural, like the characters were really there, rather than put there for the purposes of getting a good shot.

in a way this is why i miss so many of the movies from the 90s or early 2000s, like the lighting was just good, the scripts were just good, the camera angles were just good. and in that setting you can really get into the movies as whole, rather than saying “well the substance sucked but that lighting” knives out does the same, it’s just good. the symbolism is there, so is the excellent lighting, the excellent script, the characters. but they simply let those live on screen, rather than bringing them to the front and forcing you to really acknowledge it.

no one’s probably gonna read this but tl;dr the bar is kind of in hell for all around great movies and wake up dead man knocked it out of the park.

as an atheist with an insane amount of respect and sort of love for religion and my religious friends, not only do i simply adore how wake up dead man portrayed the difference between bad christianity and good christianity, but also how they didn’t make blanc like, convert at the end?? i was timidly waiting for some sob moment where he joins jud for mass and he almost does, but we’re left with the promise that he gained newfound respect for the religion without joining it. he gained newfound respect for the religion without joining it.
