Marvel.com: Of course, we also had the death of Trip in this episode. How did the discussion of Trip dying start, and what was it about his death you felt added to the overall story?
Jed Whedon: In terms of just the death of a character, it’s not something we take lightly.
Maurissa Tancharoen: It’s not something we do willy-nilly.
Jed Whedon: We need to establish that there are stakes in our world, and there can be real consequences. But mostly for us it was for the mixed emotion of that moment, which we’re very proud of. Our whole goal is to have the audience feel something, and to be able to feel excitement and despair at the same time made it seem more powerful to us. It makes for a more complicated journey for Skye going forward, because it’s not all fun and games.
Maurissa Tancharoen: Yeah, she has the weight of Trip’s death so closely associated with the moment of [gaining] her power. Juxtaposing those two images, seeing her break through the petrification [looking] so awesome and heroic in that moment, and then to see her eyes welling with tears as they land on Trip as he crumbles to the ground…we wanted that loaded and complex moment in the origin of her power.
Jed Whedon: And this is something that she may not understand right away. What happened in there, it would be complicated anyway to understand. Now it will be very emotionally complex as well.

I figure that the finale has gotten around by now. It sucks. It's nearly as bad as Damian Wayne's death over in DC Comics (only the greater level of character growth and younger age make Robin's death worse). Here was a character with potential. With no Clay Quartermain, no Gabe Jones, a Jasper Sitwell and Alexander Pierce that were evil, not even a Jake Oh... we could have used a good, solid S.H.I.E.L.D. action-type. Coulson just isn't quite the action guy. He's cool as hell, and surprising, and crazy props to Clark Gregg for being all that, but he's not going to be the guy that goes on missions as well, not as Director. Fury didn't (often), why should Coulson be different. The Triplett legacy was a bonus, something that could be played with. And he was a person of color, for those that care about those things -- myself included (it's nice to feel represented).
The method of death, going out trying to save someone or stop something worse from happening, great. But this conversation? This takes all of those actions, all of that potential, and makes them only angst for Skye. I might be the only one that came away with that, but it's both obvious and odd that they would single in on that character and their grief, yet make no mention of the others. To be clear, moving forward, I don't think that the guilt should be absent, just the opposite. But that doesn't mean it should be the main, driving force for the character's demise. A character who, I think, shouldn't have even been there. (There was something with the caverns, right? You had to be "worthy" or you'd end up like Mack? Or did I miss a piece of something. I'll probably rewatch the thing, anyway.)
But some heroes need angst-fuel. Most don't have that in the form of other heroes.
I could give predictions or ideas on how they could bring the character back or what role he could play in the upcoming Age of Ultron. I could expound theories of whether or not there was a bit of an agenda behind dropping the character, especially as we have another new (also non-white) character on the horizon, apparently. I have both (it really did kind of look like a Mack-or-Trip kind of thing, didn't it?). I'd rather not, I think. At least not for the moment.
I enjoyed the ride. I just think it ended too soon.
