thereβs no preamble to it. yuri steps idly up to balthusβ side like theyβve been there the whole time and offers, βroomβs yours again for a few days. just donβt scare off bernadetta.β a sideways glance at him, a shrug to punctuate, and then finally further elaboration, βheading off on that big trip everyone canβt stop chattering about.β
really, at face value, there isnβt any reason to worry. but if yuri had a nickel for every church mission escalated far beyond their pay grade, theyβd be swimming in enough gold to retire in seclusion. they can take care of themself just fine, but...
well. itβs not abyss they worry about leaving. hers are a resilient peopleβit wonβt crumble without them there to hold up its foundations for a few days. but in recent moons, her halls have become more than just their jail or their repentance.
they pinch their eyes shut and exhale. thatβs the problem, isnβt it, with having a heart? itβs aelfricβs problem tooβtoo wrapped up in that sticky conscience of his to see whatβs been beneath his nose all along. luckily, yuriβs not so blind and all theyβve ever had on offer to show for care is a sharp tongue. hard to get tripped up on that when itβs too busy giving other people their lashings. βdonβt get into any trouble you canβt dig yourself out of before iβm back, yeah? and youβre βbossβ until i returnβand i better still have a gang to return to.β
keep them safe, yuri means but never says. and, most importantly, keep yourself safe too.
Oh, yeah, tall order man! Bernadetta seems to break out into hysterics every time he comes around, but... anything for boss, he supposes. With a bark of laughter and a sheepish shrug of his shoulders, Balthus can do nothing but try his best to watch over the people that Yuri cares about. It's what he would do whether he was asked to or not, but the fact that boss trusts him enough to say it...
Well, he's thankful. Not something he'll take for granted.
"'Course not, boss. You gotta bring your ol' pal Balthus back somethin' shiny from that island, you hear me?" A hearty pat to their shoulder is a little bit harder than he intends, jostling both of them with the movement. "That means I gotta stay outta trouble so I can get my gift. You've got nothin' to worry about! I'll make sure my head stays low just for now."
It's not just for himself, though. Balthus's expression hardens just a bit as his fingers dig into the cloth on Yuri's shoulder, brows furrowing and jaw clenching slightly. "Hey. Yuri... I know it's supposed to be some kinda festival, but be careful, alright? People here... they need you. The wolves need you. And your bash bro Balthus here needs you too." He sounds like a fool sending his comrade off to war, but sometimes, that's what it feels like with how quickly missions from the Church can go south. The Ashen Wolves are no strangers to rough circumstances, but Balthus hates that he's not going to be there to throw himself into the fray alongside Yuri.
"Take care of yourself, boss. On my life, I got things covered here. Nobody's gonna lay a finger on the others, Bernadetta... or anything here in Abyss. I'll make sure she feels at home."
Enough sentimentality, it's bad luck before a mission. Finally pulling away, Balthus holds his fist out for a bump, grinning like the unshakeable King that he is.
"See ya later, bro."
