Setting myself up for disaster by taking a college course over the summer. I got like four assignments due on Sunday, and four projects due on July 5th. Yay!😀 plus I have to move out of my place by June 26th, so I’m doing a dozens things between now and Sunday. Busy week.
Happy Father’s Day from the gold-specs jawfish (Opistognathus randalli)! Dads-to-be of many jawfish species carry eggs in their mouths. This behavior helps protect offspring from predators. To attract females, male jawfish do a “dance” that involves a series of sweeping movements and fin-flashing. And the crescendo of this courtship ritual? Males open their mouths as wide as possible to boast their mouthbrooding potential!

The work week can be hard to handle, so here’s a handful of newts to brighten your day. Eastern newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) are amphibians that can be found across much of eastern North America. Growing up to 5 in (12.7 cm) long, they dine on a variety of invertebrates including snails and insects. During breeding season, females lay between 200 and 400 eggs—many of which are eaten by predators. But, offspring that do survive can live for up to 15 years!
