16-year-old Luo Binghe: "...and that's how I get away with tripping into Shizun's boobs during spars!"
16-year-old Hua Cheng: taking notes furiously, wistfully, and admiringly, his eyes so bright you can see almost the red one through the bandages

Thinking about MDZS politics again and how precarious everyone's positions post-war are so fascinating.
1. The Wens ransack the Cloud Recesses and this is particularly devastating for that sect because they are not an economic centre of their own, but rely on drawing in nighthunting jobs and students to 'pay the bills'. Without their centuries of collected knowledge and natural cultivation-enhancing spaces, they don't have a practical method of day-to-day sect survival available. Caiyi town, their lifeline (waterways are EVERYTHING in economics it does not matter that they can fly) is crippled before the story even starts. While the Lans aren't outright killed as the Jiang are, the Wens clearly intended to starve them out.
2. This strategy WOULD NOT work in Yunmeng, which is not geographically or economically isolated, and in which the cultivation clan is shown to participate in agriculture and acts as a trade interface. Because of its position, it also makes an excellent hub for the further control of surrounding regions (again, WATERWAYS.) So of course it has to be physically 'taken over', necessitating the extermination of the entire clan + anyone else unlucky enough to have been at Lotus Pier that day. With YMJ under their control, none of the minor sects can do much, so they're 'left alone' (have their weapons stolen but not exterminated). The Wens now control the region's trade. Even cultivators need to eat, to repair clothing and armor, to get access to medicine. This is also why Wen Qing running a supervisory office *is not morally neutral* even if she isn't actively fighting non-Wens. Her presence and oversight are part of ensuring an economic chokehold on a region that directly supplies and bolsters the Wens efforts elsewhere.
3. The fact that the Jiang sect was even 'allowed' to rebuild after the war instead of being forcefully taken over/administrated by another clan (the Jin, it would have been the Jin. They had marriage ties to justify it socially and legally, and the manpower from their late entry into the war to enforce it) reads to me as a combination of a couple interesting factors:
3.1 The fear of Wei Wuxian/demonic cultivation - which further contextualises WWX's exit as him not just abandoning JC as an individual but jeopardizing his clan as well. Which I think is obvious but people do forget at times.
3.2 The degree to which the Jin are committed to their benevolent self-image and how much political sway that lends them.
3.3 The continued capitulation and overtures from the Jiang sect towards their nearby allies and the great sects who stand to benefit from having such an economically-rich region well-managed without having to sacrifice their own manpower, but still be something they greatly benefit from. This is JYL's marriage, the grace of having one of YZY's greatest friends as the mother-in-law; unfavourable trade deals, giving up salvaged artifacts and stretching their people thin attempting to both regain wealth and trust from citizenry through nighthunting.
3.4 Nie Mingjue (and SL Yao) - really the only sect leaders who consider honor foremost in their political decisions, and therefore the most likely to support the continuation of YMJ ideologically, as the rightful recapturing of stolen land/act of rightful revenge. This remains contingent on YMJ's continued adherence *to that regime of revenge*.
4. The rebuilding of Cloud Recesses is similarly rife with complicated politics, chief of which is Lan Xichen's need to please Jin Guangyao, through which the Jin offer financial aid to help physically rebuild infrastructure. (Not that they aren't genuine friends, but their political relationship is very much part of things). Recall also that, in order to draw in students, Gusu Lan has to present themselves as righteous as per the societal definition of righteousness, internal moral reasoning aside.
5. The Wens' destructive/disruptive path through cultivator society was so widespread and thorough and well-planned, that it's little wonder literally no one has any goodwill towards people surnamed Wen in the post-war. Consider this: there were servants/merchants/visiting families/fishermen/ordinary folk who were killed or had their livelihoods ruined by the Wens during their regional takeovers. Does the blood of only the cultivator Wens make up for these lives too? Were they not themselves innocents who just so happened to be around Yunmeng/Caiyi Town/the Cloud Recesses/delivering food to the Clan hubs/weaving cloth to sell to the cultivators/picking their herbs/excitedly showing their children the cultivators flying by? Just think about this, and come to your own conclusions, on the difficulty of assigning blame and innocence.
6. What the cultivation world did in turning around and killing the Wen remnants was inevitable. The participation in that extermination of characters we otherwise like/support was also inevitable within the confines of the political and social structures they inhabit. Just as Wen Qing's supervisory role was, and Wen Ning's leadership of his Wen squad was. This is part of the tragedy of all of it. MDZS is not a story about wandering cultivators in the Jianghu who are neither beholden to the rule of politics nor have any collateral supports endangered by their action/inaction. Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan come at the problem with the hope that it is nepotism that corrupts this system, but This Is How Political Systems Function. So long as the cultivation sects exist as sects with complex economic ties to one another and regular regional+ economics, all of which are entrenched in a society with particular values (all of which reiterate the preservation of the sect/clan and these structures and relationships) this will be the reaction to these kinds of events.
So obviously I spend a lot of time thinking about lan wangji hearing wangxian and knowing that wei wuxian is back.
BUT! imagine how he must have felt when jiang cheng hit wei wuxian with zidian. imagine! you've spent 13 years mourning the love of your life. raising his son as your own. scars on your chest and back that will forever remind you of what you've lost. and then he comes back. it's an unfamiliar body but you know that it's him. you can keep him safe this time.
and then his asshole brother who you HATE hits your love with the exorcism whip and for a second, you think you've lost him again. your second chance, vanished as soon as you found it.
and then he's fine! your lost love is still there, being his annoying self, flirting with you. probably just to piss his brother off but he says you're his type. this all happens within like five minutes. emotional rollercoaster of all time.

Part 1
"Xue Yang did all that to avenge his finger" is such a funny take, like. Did you listen to his story? Did you put yourself in the shoes of his 7yo self for ANY seconds at all?
Because lets recap: He was tricked, and used, and hungry, and beaten repeatedly, and treated as worthless and disposable, all by a man fully capable of paying him for his work. He was sent alone to deliver a taunt to a dangerous man. He was seven. He accepting the beating he received without complaint, and was further beaten for asking for the payment he'd been promised. He was whipped, and knocked in front of an ox cart.
Chang Ci'an didn't AIM the cart at his finger.
Chang Ci'an deliberately knocked a seven year old orphan child to the ground in front of an ox cart and ordered the driver to drive over the child.
And the driver did.
He manage to escape with ONLY one crushed finger (and, we can assume, many less permanent injuries). Crushing injuries are incredibly serious, and even one so small can be deadly. An orphaned child can't afford decent medical care. Adult Xue Yang has a SEVERED finger, which means that at best he managed to find a doctor who would amputate it for him, and at worst he cut it off himself. At age seven. Xue Yang is INSANELY lucky to have survived to age 8 after this incident.
This is why Xiao Xingchen's suggestion that Xue Yang should have merely cut off Chang Ci'an's finger, or hand, or arm, is so upsetting to Xue Yang. Yes, the revenge he did take was abhorrent and excessive, but Xingchen totally misses the point of the story (understandable in the moment, everything is happening SO MUCH at that point).
Xue Yang, at age seven, had done nothing wrong. He was a child, he was innocent, and he didn't deserve to be treated like his life was worthless by Chang Ci'an, or the cart driver, or the message recipient, or the restaurant owner, or every observer on the street who did nothing to help. And every person who tells him it's "just a finger" further treats the very real devaluing of and threat to his life as normal and fine.
If he, any time after age 7, had been able to exact revenge by cutting off Chang Ci'an's arm, there is nothing equivalent about that revenge. A severed arm is not a crushing injury, and is less likely to produce life-long chronic pain. Chang Ci'an would have good medical care-- a doctor, medicine, pain killers. His life would not meaningfully be in danger. Chang Ci'an had family (and money) to help him with whatever tasks being one-handed made difficult. Chang Ci'an was an adult, who's already lived a life without pain and disability, and who's prospects will not be impacted. Chang Ci'an was an ADULT and therefore better able to understand what was happening and why. And beyond all of that, Chang Ci'an would DESERVE IT.
To say that Xue Yang did everything he did to the Chang Clan in revenge over "losing his finger" is to betray an utter lack of willingness to empathize with Xue Yang. Even the 7yo version of him.
And he knows it. Which is why the suggestion is so upsetting.
This joke has been stuck in my head for weeks
do u think omegaverse acknowledges covid-19 and the generation of people who permanently lost their sense of smell like how are they all scenting each other now is the omegaverse economy in shambles
actually pheromone sensing works differently from normal olfaction, since humans in our world don’t have a functioning vomeronasal organ (VNO), we don’t have any data on how covid-19 would affect a functioning VNO in omegaverse AUs
Actually there is evidence that covid probably would affect the VNO and it stands to reason would accordingly impair its function. Briefly:
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid, can only infect cells expressing a certain protein called ACE2
ACE2 is expressed widely in nasal cavity epithelial cells but not in olfactory sensory neurons.
Seo et al. (2021) studied potential nasal targets for SARS-CoV-2 using golden hamsters as a model organism (commonly used as a proxy for humans in virology studies)
They found ACE2 expression in the main olfactory bulb epithelium (MOE, your “normal” nose organ) as well as the vomeronasal organ (VNO)
Several cell types in the VNO were able to be infected and they also found significant inflammatory activity (macrophage activation, apoptotic cells, etc)
The specifics of how covid actually causes dysosmia are not known for sure but epithelial damage by local inflammatory immune responses likely plays a role, especially because sensory neurons themselves are not affected (Bilinska, & Butowt, 2020). Therefore I would suggest a potential similar effect of VNO dysfunction as we see in the main olfactory bulb
From Seo et al.: “Considering the function of the VNO, infection and subsequent pathologic changes may affect the behavior of Syrian hamsters”
If it stands to reason that omegaverse individuals have functioning VNOs similar to members of the animal kingdom, then it is more than reasonable to conclude that covid may cause them to lose not only their main olfactory function, but also their VNO function as well

In conclusion the omegaverse economy IS in shambles.
OP this is very well-written but im still hung up on how you came onstage dressed as a clown only to tear off the costume and reveal yourself as a biologist
when two musicians sing into the same microphone and lean in very close to each other… like omg are you guys gonna kiss now to relieve the homoerotic tension?😳
THIS IS NOT ABOUT ONE DIRECTION I DON’T KNOW WHO THIS “HARRY” PERSON IS GO WATCH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND CLARENCE CLEMONS KISS ON STAGE RIGHT NOW
op is the only valid person i’ve ever met. everyone else needs to come to the light
Okay, but this is really important: Bruce Springsteen occupied this really weird place in music history. His songs were all from this pessimistic, nihilistic view of an America that had let him down:
Just like the anti-Vietnam War protest songs that we associate with the 1960s, or the early nihilism that spawned punk music in the 1970s. But he didn’t *sound* like a punk anarchist; he sounded like a country rock singer. When he released Born in the U.S.A. people completely misinterpreted (or possibly ignored) the lyrics in favor of the tone of the music.
Politicians used his music to promote their ‘Murica Yes! brand, and he had to literally explain that that was not what he was about. He’s over here asking when we’re going to have jobs and heathcare, not stanning the politicians who weren’t helping the people.
It was also kind of a big deal that he had an integrated band, because even as late as the 1980s music was still kind of segregated and MTV was straight up racist. They refused to play and promote black artists and then claimed that were no black artists in the first place. Michael Jackson’s record company had to threaten a boycott of their white artists to get MTV to play his Thriller video.
Plus, the first black/white interracial kiss on TV was in 1968 (OG Star Trek). Also it took us until the 70s to get sympathetic gay characters on screen, and the 90s to get gay characters to kiss onscreen. And all of those firsts were met with outrage.
So keep that in mind when you see Bruce Springsteen not just playing with an interracial band, but engaging in an interracial, gay kiss on stage repeatedly.
Passages from American Popular Music by Larry Starr and Christopher Waterman
I used to think that Bruce and Clarence kissing onstage was exuberance, showmanship, and telling racist homophobes to fuck off. Like, they picked up a certain kind of audience and went “Racist homophobes? Not in our house!” And started the kissing then but then I actually looked it up and

It was a story where… we remade the city. We remade the city, shaping it into the kind of place where our friendship and our love for one another wouldn’t have been such an exceptional thing. - Bruce Springsteen
It wasn’t about showmanship or rejecting bigots or anything it was just. Damn right that was one of the loves of his life and damn right he was going to kiss him onstage
It gets me a little that Bruce has had a divorce, that he’s been married twice, but he loved Clarence for the rest of Clarence’s life and will presumably love him the rest of his own
Clemons said in one interview. “Bruce and I looked at each other and didn’t say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each other’s lives. He was what I’d been searching for.” In another version of the story, Clemons says “He looked at me, and I looked at him, and we fell in love.”
I’m having some emotions about it!
“He was elemental in my life,“ Springsteen adds, “and losing him was like losing the rain.”
Not just! I love you pure and deep and true but! I am going to love you like that in front of the whole damn world!
We have fewer narratives about taking risks and making statements for platonic love rather than romantic and supposedly it would be easier to downplay this onstage than romance and! They refused! They fucking refused! In front of hundreds of thousands of people, over the course of years! In the spotlight, in word and deed, I love you!
God I’m not okay about it
Now I’m mad that this is not among any of the things I was ever told about this artist.
I knew about this in general (& via all those fabulous photos), but this just adds even more beautiful context <3
Just to add to the pile: this was the cover of Springsteen’s break-through album Born to Run, in 1975:
I mean, will you LOOK at this:
This was the pic chosen for the album cover from an extensive photoshoot, too. A few others:
There’s a lot more online if you search. They’re all pretty amazing. But the photographer is right, the one chosen for the album cover just pops.
