I had to laugh at the part of Jane Eyre where St. John is freezing out Jane because she agreed to go to India with him platonically but not to marry him, and she’s (naturally) thinking he’s pissed off at being rejected and says something to him about it, and he’s like “wait…you’re not going to marry me? Because you said you would go to India, and you have to marry me if you go to India, and you have to go to India because you said you would go to India!” And she’s like “I said I would go to India with you but not if I have to marry you.” And he’s like, “fine, you can go to India with a married couple I found and not marry me! That way you will be saved from the dishonor of breaking your promise!” And she’s like “that’s not going to India with you, though, and I didn’t promise anything!” And he’s like “but you’d be so good at going to India! You’re great at doing things you hate!”
