(7/30/26) The Red Cross just declared the second US blood crisis in its history.
Summer sees both a drop off in donations and, at least for our trauma center, a spike in traumas. Trauma centers across the US are in danger of running out of blood for our trauma patients TODAY, which is very scary but, unlike much of the other scary national news coming across our screens these days, is something you can help fix immediately and directly.
We need ASAP donations of blood, for people to spread the word, and for manager types to help facilitate others' donations. All blood types are needed, but universal donor blood (type O) is especially dire.
I'm a regular donor so I made a little FAQ if you're eligible and curious about giving blood!
Does it hurt? a little! I won't lie! but less then you would expect: once the needle is inserted they're going to take all the samples they need from the same line so you only get pricked once. (The last several times I've donated, they've traded the little finger sticks to test your hemoglobin for a machine that squeezes your thumb and uses light to count your red blood cell volume?? very cool)
How long does it take? for me, less than half an hour. I'm on the fast end, so maybe closer to an hour for others. A lot of this time is paperwork and setup! I fill the pint bag in about five minutes.
What happens when I arrive at the appointment? The nurse will double check that you are eligible by having you read through and answer a bunch of yes or no questions, then they check your hemoglobin, temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate to make sure you're healthy enough to give. Everyone I've had helping me has always been super nice (they're happy you're here donating!), so you can ask questions about the process and let them know you're a first timer. Then they'll have you lie back, clean your arm with a swab, and line up where they want the needle to go by drawing on your arm with a marker. again, they're going to explain everything to you and will answer your questions.
What if I'm kinda afraid of needles? During the needle insertion, you can definitely look away if you are nervous! there's no shame in it, lots of people donate who don't like the sight of the needle itself; they actually cover the needle site with a little cotton square by default while you are giving. if you are able to get a piercing or a vaccine without an anxiety attack or passing out, you can definitely try donating blood. let the nurse know if you are feeling anxious - they can distract you or talk you through it. you can also be on your phone with your other hand during the donation!
Okay, but how does it actually... work? You will have a stress ball to gently squeeze and rotate to keep the blood flowing. The needle in your inner arm is connected to a tube that runs through a special machine to the bag, which is resting on a scale. When you fill a certain weight of blood into the bag, the machine automatically pinches your tube closed to slow your flow so you can't give too much while the nurse returns to you (they usually have several patients in the same room with a few nurses floating between them). The nurse will then seal off the bag, remove your tube from the machine, and apply a device to your line that lets them fill a few little vials - these are used to test your blood to ensure it's safe for patients. Then they'll remove the needle, bandage you up, and you're done!
What happens after the appointment? You should wait around at the blood donation center for ten to fifteen minutes, just to make sure you don't have a bad reaction. it's uncommon, but some people can get light-headed just from the blood loss itself. they have snacks and drinks for you to refuel!
How will I feel afterwards? Tired, mostly. plan to spend the rest of the day taking it easy. Have someone lift heavy things for you for the next 24-48 hours. make sure to eat and drink more than usual so your body can make more blood to replace what you've lost. you will also probably get an email telling you where they sent your blood, and sometimes I get a $10 gift card as a thank you - this may be their type O donor reward? not sure. oh, but you'll also feel GREAT remembering you saved one to three human lives! (yes three! sometimes they split your blood up into platelets, red blood cells, and plasma.)
The red cross website also has lots of info for first time donors, as well as the info you'll need to determine your eligibility - and if you think you're not eligible, you should check! some of the rules have changed over the past few years. if you have any other questions, feel free to drop me an ask! giving blood is such a simple way to help others, I would love to help you get started!
