My personal thoughts on Black x Readers as an African American
You know something that I constantly wonder about? How most (insert character here) x Black!Reader's are usually dark smut fics.
Like I go to look for a fluffy fic and all I find is y/n getting railed in their sleep non-consensually! These stories always have a bittersweet twisted ending. Now if that's your thing go off but NOT IN EVERY S I N G L E STORY! You don't look up x black!reader smut non-con you just look up x black!reader and that's all that's there.
In my experience of searching AND I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING, most of the time the fic doesn't even mention the reader being black or only gives like 1 description like "y/n's luscious black curls" AND THAT'S IT!
Most of the time the tag x Black!reader feels more like just a tag to get reads rather than an actual attempt at creating more representation!
The thing that I think gets under my skin the most is the fact that most of the stories are FULL of stereotypes about African Americans! The tags almost always have the Daddy kink, choking kink, spit kink, Drug use, toxic relationships, abuse of some sort! Or there are like 40 tags of black Y/n getting SPECIFICALLY violently fucked!
OR the story points out how y/n "picked out her huge afro and put on her large hoop earrings" or "y/n put on their Air Jordans and went to see their baby daddy for the child support that he owes" (I'M SERIOUS)!
I just wish that there was more appropriate representation in the x reader community rather than the few good stories that we are given. BECAUSE TRUST ME there are some really good cute ones that have fluff or romantic smut or getting railed BUT that's not the WHOLE DAMN STORY (and even if it is it's done in a respectful manner!)but there are so few.
And I can already here the argument "WELL, WHY DON'T YOU CREATE SOME REPRESENTATION YoURSeLf!" I will. Not much will change if I only complain about it and I am aware of that BUT it is not my responsibility to create every peice of representation that appropriately represents my community.
One peice of positive representation versus 100 peices of "representation" can only change but so much.
But then again that's why I'm writing this post if I want to see change the first thing I have to do is at least bring attention to what I see as the issue.
But what are your thoughts on the issue?
There's a lot to be said for the parallels between these two relationships: Natasha & Yelena and Bucky & Steve.
Black Widow portrayed a sisterly bond between Yelena and Natasha. The two are NOT related. They lived together for a few years as a fake family. Natasha knew it was fake. Yelena didn't. Yet, that bond was so strong that Yelena was easily manipulated into going on a revenge mission to kill Clint, who she perceived as responsible for the death of Natasha. At no point do we, the audience, question the intensity of this bond or its legitimacy. They ARE sisters.
Bucky and Steve grew up together. They knew one another their entire lives. They were inseparable on the playground. When Steve had nothing, he still had Bucky. Their friendship spanned decades, even before WW2, much longer than the duration of Natasha and Yelena's relationship. Bucky looked after Steve much like he would a little brother, defending him, fighting bullies, watching out for him, arguing with him, and setting him up on dates. Hell, he GAVE HIS LIFE for Steve, picking up the shield and placing himself between a Hydra soldier and Steve, taking a blast from a canon that sent him clinging for his life to the side of the train.
Steve and Bucky were not genetically related, either, but they were brothers. Yet, in the MCU, we ARE made to question that relationship. Wasn't Bucky just "an old war buddy?" Why would Steve put this relationship above his relationship with Tony Stark? (There's a lot to unpack there - but that would be another dissertation. Suffice it to say, Tony and Steve did not get along great, and they only knew one another for a few years; whereas Steve grew up practically joined at the hip with Bucky and then fighting Nazis / Hydra with him during the war).
Bucky and Steve's relationship has a depth and longevity that surpasses even that of Natasha and Yelena due to the sheer length of time involved and the hardships they faced together.
While I loved seeing some of the touching and funny sibling moments between Natasha and Yelena, I lament that we got almost none of them between Bucky and Steve.
There, that's it. That's the whole point of my post. Forgive me, but I binge-watched the Captain America movies and IW/Endgame during the pandemic and that's when it really hit me, and I'm still licking those wounds.
How writers look when putting angst no happy ending, major character death, and hurt no comfort in their WIPs.
Me at 3am clicking ākeep readingā on the most jaw dropping, earth shattering, pantie dropping, smutty fic when I have to be up in 3 hours
hope your days get softer from here on out. hope the hurt lessens and the dark turns to light. you deserve gentleness and good love. I hope it finds you soon.
Re-Blog thisā¦. if you know it too.
