It's been awhile since I've been here and I just realized my username and laughed so hard-

one time, back when they’re still bodyguard and personal attendant, feng xin finds mu qing crouched in a faraway corner of the palace, hugging his knees to his chest and sobbing quietly.

mq fully expects fq to ridicule him for this for the rest of his life. but he doesn’t do that, and he doesn’t ask any questions. he simply crouches next to mq, and slowly, hesitantly wraps one arm around his back, pulling him into his chest.

mu qing startles at this, not knowing whether this is some twisted prank from fq and he should pull away, or if he should rather allow himself to cry into fq’s chest like this is /normal/ for them, like his whole world isn’t tilting on its axis from this simple gesture of fx’s.

but, in the end, the warmth radiating from fx’s body and the strength with which he holds mq convince him that maybe, just for once, this is okay. maybe he can cry in front of his rival if it means he’ll finally be treated like a human being.

and they stay like this until mq’s sobs finally subside and he detangles himself from fx’s embrace. an incident like this doesn’t happen again, and neither of them mention it for a very long time.

but centuries later, when asked about why he comforted mu qing back then, feng xin would say that he “couldn’t bear to see mu qing cry”. it was as simple as that. he wanted to help, and so he stayed with mq until he calmed down. and he would do it again without hesitation.
