Frankly I think a lot of Tumblr users think there is no overlap between trans women and gay men like there is between trans men and lesbians 1. because RuPaul did a great job intentionally convincing at least two generations of baby queers that gay men and trans women don't share culture because he's a transmisogynist piece of shit who intentionally kept trans women off Drag Race for years - shattering the perception of our community overlap in the eyes of the mainstream, 1.5. and that culture he cultivated in the mainstream made you afraid of drag as an art so you're uncurious about it, and 2. you're afraid of learning about balls because they're not sanitized white queer culture.

I need it to be so clear that I said "our community overlap" so intentionally because as nonbinary as I am, being a gay man is also a deeply important part of my identity.

Wonderfully faggotty trans women who fuck around with gender and sexuality and do drag* were hugely influential when it came to my own realization that I not only could but also explicitly *wanted* to blur the lines between man and woman too. I owe them so much. We share this wonderful space in gay and trans identity together that I'm eternally thankful for and despise RuPaul for erasing.

*And because this is the website we're on: It's okay if that's not the kind of trans woman you are and I'm genuinely sorry if people try to impose that kind of identity on you — but if this isn't how you identify I'm just flat out not talking about you. I'm talking about those women who DO like to fuck around and play with gender and drag. They're just as much women as you are and you need to get over yourself about it.
