Tips for Studying Chemistry
Chemistry can be very difficult, even those of us who have made it through physical chemistry. I cried and I debated whether or not I should really be a chemistry major. Well here I am with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and I will be attending graduate school in the fall in hopes to obtain a Ph.D. in Organic and Analytical Chemistry.

General Tips:
-Handwritten notes, I find, are the best way to learn chemistry. Writing everything out and drawing structures and diagrams provides a more thorough learning experience as opposed to typing things out. -DO ALL OF THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS -If you are unsure of a concept, PLEASE utilize your professor’s office hours. They are almost willing to help you out if you go to designated OFFICE HOURS. -Read the lecture chapter before you come to lecture. This allows you to get a preview of what to expect. Take this time to familiarize yourself with topics you’re unsure of.
Studying:
The unfortunate part of chemistry is the fact there are different branches of chemistry and you can’t always take study techniques you used, in say organic chemistry, and apply them to physical chemistry. Here is what I did for each chemistry branch:
1) General Chemistry:
I had MasteringChemistry with my lectures, so I had extra sets of homework problems to practice
I used the textbook a lot, since I was a freshman and this was how I studied in high school, which didn’t always work in my favor on the exams. However, using the problems at the end of the chapters helped me cement all of the concepts down.
I was a freshman when I took this, so I thought memorizing things could get me an A. BIG MISTAKE. If you’re a chemistry major or thinking of becoming a chemistry major, general chemistry concepts come back to bite you in the butt hard if you don’t get understand them the first time.
Honestly, this was about 5 years ago, so I cannot remember everything I did. Just practice!
2) Organic Chemistry
Practice, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! Rewrite and do as many reaction problems as you can.
The textbook helped me for concepts and problem solving strategies for the different types of reactions, but did not help me on the exam material. My organic chemistry professor, who is also my research adviser, is a natural product chemist and she loves the quirky, medicinal reactions that require enzymes.
I have been told to get this book for organic I and organic II. I didn’t use these books because I already had to spend a shit ton of money on books, but my friends swore by them and even my professors recommend it.
I started to use connections between the lab reactions and lecture reactions, which helped me understand rather than memorize.
If your professors post their old tests and quizzes, USE them! They may not be the exact questions, but at least you get to see how your professor tests you.
3) Analytical:
This is really broad because you generally have two types of analytical courses if you have an American Chemical Society-Certified degree which include Quantitative Analytical Chemistry *Quant Chem* (sophomore level) and Modern Analytical or Instrumental Analysis (senior level). Here is how to study:
Reread ACID-BASE REACTIONS and EQUILIBRIUM, SOLUBILITY EQUILIBRIUM, AQUEOUS CHEMISTRY, REDOX EQUATIONS, DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS, SIG-FIGS, and SOLUBILITY RULES OF IONS. These are reoccurring topics in Quant Chem and should be practiced if you’re a little rusty.
Do the homework problems.
There is a lab component to the analytical labs. Try to make a connection between the lecture theoretical questions and the lab, which has the practical applications. It does help when understanding homework problems in equilibrium.
READ the textbook and annotate.
Ask questions if ANYTHING is unclear.
4) Physical Chemistry:
To be honest, this is the hardest class to give tips in to help study since this is the class you either get it or you don’t. I struggled with this class. Thankfully the lab was 25% of my grade and I made A’s in the lab, but did so crappy in the lecture that the lab grade was the only saving grace I had to pass with a C. Here is what I did to survive:
Do EVERY SINGLE homework problem. I cannot stress this enough, especially with physical chemistry.
Buy the solution for this class. Trust me, it will help 8/10 times. Sometimes there are errors in the textbook or they leave out steps, but having this is muy importante in kinda understanding the topics and if your problem solving skills are heading in the right direction. Do not depend on this fully though, only if you need to check the answer afterwards or are unsure of how to approach the problem.
Know your basic general chemistry skills like orbitals and basic calculus skills like integration and derivation.
Read and reread the textbook. The textbooks for physical chemistry are dry, dull, and awful to read a majority of the time, but do read the chapter and reread it again to annotate chapters.
Look up old physical chemistry exams on the web and take practice exams. Its more practice with the material that may not be your professor’s style, but PChem professors love to throw wacky test questions your way.
Ask older students for copies of old tests and quizzes from the class from the same professor. I normally say, “do your own work and don’t ask for old tests”, but for this class I got the old study guides from the senior students which were the exact questions from the tests. Some professors don’t change their exams, some do. This to your discretion and this may be considered cheating, but I am not sure. If you don’t feel comfortable using old tests without the verbal and written say-so of your professor, don’t do it.
5) Biochemistry:
Ok, this class is memorizing EVERYTHING. Sugars, amino acids, metabolic cycles, and there is no way around it.
Write and rewrite everything out. Draw the structures with the stereochemistry, the abbreviation, the name, etc.
Read the chapters before lecture, it’ll help.
Do the homework problems, of course (see a theme?)
I used study groups in this class, but I had, at a max, 3 people in the study group including myself. It helps to quiz each other on everything to memorize.
Concepts are a big part of biochemistry. While there are parts to memorize, such as the amino acids, you have to understand how these amino acids will later form a protein and the processes involved. The metabolic pathways, which are useful for medicinal chemistry, requires more thought process and will later return if you pursue biochemistry as a major or Ph.D. study.
6) Inorganic:
Have a good chemistry model kit (not the organic ones), especially if you cannot see 3D structures. You will need this for symmetry operation visuals, which help for solving spectroscopy problems
Read the text book and take a lot of notes prior to class
Do as much as the homework problems as you can after lecture
Go to office hours and ask questions if ANYTHING is unclear. Most of the topics towards the end are repetitive.
Stay on top of all your work for each section. Like I said, towards the end of Inorganic, things either come back to haunt you or you are doing the same type of problem over again.
There are other chemistry courses by each university, but here are the general branches of chemistry you can expect in any degree at any university. These tips are what helped me through my degree and I graduated above a 3.0. Hope this helps :)

A well organised folder can be the key to making revision and coursework a million times easier. Everyone’s needs for folders are different, so I’m not going into specifics, just into my methods of making my folder easy to use.
Get the right folder- choose the size and type of ring binder/lever arch file that is best for your subects. I personally have one small ring binder for each subject, with a big lever arch file to store old notes when the little binder gets full. Others use one big file for everything, or use big files at home and store current work in a plastic wallet. The best is whatever works for you
File dividers- for me, these are the only way I can keep my files organised all term. Paper are fine, though plastic ones are longer lasting. I buy packs with 10 dividers-if you don’t use some in one folder, keep them and use them in another. Mine are labelled only with a number so I can change the folder round if I need
Sticky notes- these are an easy way to create non-permanent labels for each section, useful if you might want to reuse dividers, as well as making your different labels clear
Index- one big sticky note with a list of all your sections, with the number of the section will make it easy to find things
Section content- I use smaller sticky notes to label each divider with what it is meant to contain, to help me remember and so it’s easy to look for specific pages. In the “essays” section of this folder, for example, I have a label with the title of each essay, in the order I wrote them, and I’ll be adding my grades for each one
To Do list- I use another sticky note on the first divider to keep track of homework and other things I need to do for the specific subject. This has proved easier for me than trying to note down homework in a planner
Include index cards- I hole punch index cards that have chapter summaries for content based lessons like Biology, and for English I have cards with things I need to remember when writing

Drug shows promise as single-dose cure and as preventive treatment for malaria
Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center and in Australia have shown that a drug currently in testing shows potential to cure malaria in a single dose and offers promise as a preventive treatment as well.
The new drug – DSM265 − kills drug-resistant malaria parasites in the blood and liver by targeting their ability to replicate. Malaria is a highly infectious, mosquito-transmitted disease that kills nearly 600,000 people worldwide each year, mostly children under 5 years old living in sub-Saharan Africa. Nearly 200 million cases of malaria are reported annually, and about 3 billion people are at risk of malaria in 97 countries.
“DSM265 could be among the first single-dose cures for malaria, and would be used in partnership with another drug,” said lead author Dr. Margaret Phillips, Professor of Pharmacology at UT Southwestern. “The drug also could potentially be developed as a once-weekly preventive.”
The research team included UT Southwestern, the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Australia, the University of Washington, and the not-for-profit Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV). The study was published in Science Translational Medicine.

This guy has such awesome lectures. I love them. I hate to put down my professor a bit but his explanations make a bit more sense than hers. It’s likely just a matter of learning styles, because she actually is very good at explaining things when I ask questions. She goes pretty fast and uses the same style, but I can’t have closed captions for her lectures. (I don’t learn very well on the basis of audio alone.)
I’m honestly thinking that, for next semester, I will take notes on his videos and skim the book before class, then relax and add to my notes during lecture. (She can be intense.) And read the text carefully later, of course.
I think it was easy to get off track with that this semester because we had group work, but that’s probably an excuse. Let’s be honest.

THE B IN B VITAMINS STANDS FOR BUMMER
I always mix up the stupid B vitamins and their actual names vs their number, and I told my internal med attending this and now I have to do a mini presentation tomorrow about B vitamins. So here is the handout I came up with, all basically from Step 1 First Aid.
B VITAMINS ARE COOL YEAH!
Vitamin B1 (th1am1ne)
What does it do: cofactor for all the things in glucose breakdown
Deficiency: impaired glucose breakdown = ATP depletion. Wernicke-Korsakoff. Beriberi (wet/dry). Seen in folks whose primary diet is husked white rice. Dx = increase RBC transketolase following thiamine administration
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin/r2b2)
What does it do: component of FAD and FMN (source of e-), cofactors, kind of a big deal
Deficiency: cheilosis, corneal vascularization, magenta-colored tongue
Vitamin B3 (niacin/sunglasses cat face–> B3 )
What does it do: NAD+ and NADP+, redox rxns, Derived from tryptophan. Synth from B2 and B6. Used to tx dyslipidemia (lowers VLDL/raises HDL)
Deficiency: glossitis. Pellagra (anything that decreases tryptophan absorption or inc metabolism) = diarrhea, dementia, dermatitis
Excess: facial flushing, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia

Vitamin B5 (pantothenate/5 pants)
What does it do: essential component of CoA and other things
Deficiency: dermatitis, enteritis, alopecia, adrenal insufficiency
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine/siX)
What does it do: synthesis of lots of things (neurotransmitters, heme, molecules) and cofactor of transamination
Deficiency: convulsions, hyperirritability, peripheral neuropathy, microcytic sideroblastic anemia, cheilosis/stomatitis. MCC etoh and isoniazid.
Vitamin B7 (biotin/ALMOST has 7 letters)
What does it do: Cofactor for adding 1-carbon group
Deficiency: dermatitis alopecia, enteritis, fasting hypoglycemia. Can be caused by eating too many raw egg whites (avidin binds biotin).
WHO NEEDS B8 NOT YOU
Vitamin B9 (folic acid/9 months of pregnancy)
What does it do: converted to THF; synthesis of nitrogenous bases for DNA/RNA.
Deficiency: macrocytic megaloblastic anemia, hypersegmented PMNs, glossitis, NO NEUROLOGIC SX. Increased homocysteine, normal methylmalonic acid. MCC deficiency in US, dt etoh or pregnancy.
10 and 11 ARE SILLY NUMBERS!!!
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin but who calls it that let’s be real)
What does it do: cofactor for important things
Deficiency: macrocytic megaloblastic anemia, hypersegmented PMNs, parathesias, subacute combined degeneration of dorsal columns, lateral corticospinal tracts, and spinocerebellar tracts. Increased homocysteine AND methylmalonic acid.

Amino acids chart, handy for any biochem major

We had a half day in school today for the Muslim students to go home and spend time with their family before Hari Raya Aidilfitri tomorrow. So my friends and I went shopping and when I saw the Stabilo highlighter I just had to get it. I’ve never seen that colour before and it’s gorgeous. It’s coral but slightly brighter. There was also a really pretty cyan one but I had restrict myself from getting it. I also picked up a Stabilo fineliner for my notes. The Muji pens were being sold for 10% off any two so I got a spare blue one and a red one for notes :)
