“The speed with which the ‘talkies’ replaced silent movies was breathtaking. By 1932, the last great movie palace to show silent in Paris, la Salle des Agriculteurs had switched to talkies, and by 1934 even the cheap picture houses on the grands boulevards, which also functioned as unofficial brothels, had invested in the new projection equipment. There was now nowhere to see silent films and very soon companies started jettisoning the reels themselves. Not only were silent films now economically without value but the material from which they were made, silver nitrate, had a value of its own as the silver could be recovered from old film stock.
