How the Avian species works
The ultimate guide to our endangered neighbours
TW: mentions of; sex, vomit, cloacas, faeces, religion, egg laying, A/B/O
To us thereās spring, summer, autumn/fall & winter and they use these as well but more commonly they use:
Breeding season (March, April, May)
These months are when alphas go into rut and omegas go into their heat. Itās like a holiday for many, a celebration. As Iām sure you can make the observation that this is the month where sex drives are highest and most chicks are conceived around this time
Nesting season (June, July, August)
Birds will get the instinct to build nests and their sex drives will go down with time in. Most eggs are laid in this season. Nesting can mean anything from adding extra blankets to a bed or to collecting sticks, going into a tree and building a proper nest, only homeless birds really do that but some do it for tradition.
chick season (September, October, November)
When eggs hatch and chicks start to grow up, very stressful time for everyone if they have kids or not, birds tend to take the āit takes a villageā phrase very seriously and everyone helps out everyone as much as possible.
Molting season (December, January, February)
The awkward season for birds, especially for juveniles this is when their puberty kicks in and they grow feathers, get taller, vocal cords develop and for adults it just means new feathers in the cold and losing some when itās warmer but it can change depending on the weather & climate
Pin feathers are the beginning of feathers, they grow rapped in a thin sheet of keratin that protects it and lets blood flow through it as it properly develops the keratin will come off by pinching them or putting them in between their specialised teeth. Sometimes the pin feather will be itchy, painful or cause irritation especially in juveniles. Birds have developed specialised teeth for preening appropriately named-preening teeth! When birds close their mouths between the canines and incisors a small gap is formed. This developed because birds used to have beaks which were perfectly designed for preening but when breeding with humans they lost their beaks and had to develop something to replace it
Most birds will have just feathers on their head and body but some birds will have hair and feathers everywhere even well after theyāre done puberty! There no specific reason for this itās just genetics.
Some have crests which is when they more feathers on a specific part of their head, on the back or the top of the head, again no real reason for this.
Birds are very good at keeping their feathers clean and dry, most will have an oil gland on the base of the tail which waterproofs the feathers and helps kill of parasites. More rarely theyāll have powder down which is pretty much useful dust, it comes from specialised down feathers that give off the water proof powder which again can help with feather parasites and bugs.
down feathers are soft feathers that birds have when they are first hatched to keep them warm, they fall out quickly and the birds remain featherless until puberty
Birds anatomy is specially adapted for flight in many ways, first their bones, their bones are actually a part of the respiratory system meaning all through their bones are holes to breath through which makes them lighter, this means breaking bones can be pretty easy and the healing proses longer because of how specialised they are. The air sacks that connect to their bones are in their wings and legs, again making them lighter and
Cloacas are all-propose holes used for mating, defecation and excreting urine, although their urine isnāt really urine, they donāt have a bladder and itās usually more of a white paste then anything weāre used to and since it comes out from the anus like faeces it mixes together anyway.
Mating, also known as cloaca kissing is when two birds will rub their cloacas together, usually this is done with a bird on top of any other bird thatās bending over or on their hands and knees but some find different positions more comfortable and many will experiment with what ever works, also most all of the time this is done with an alpha on top and an omega on the bottom and itās unusual and taboo to do anything different.
From ages 10 to 18 is when birds puberty hits, what surprises most humans is that birds arenāt born with their wings outside but instead they grow inside and break out of their backs at age 12 to 15. As painful as a proses that sounds it happens very slowly over a course of days and surrounded by families members, what the most common way is to bathe in a very warm bath for hours while a family member rubs the soar areas with a sponge.
There are three types of birds in this world alphas, omegas and betas, but what do these mean? I will tell you, basically theyāre sexes as in biological sexes like we have male and female. The two main ones are alphas and omegas.
Alphas are the typically dominant ones, the ones that impregnated omegas, ruts, the ones that protect and fight and hunt.
The omegas on the other hand are typically the exact opposite, the submissive, heats, the ones that carry eggs and lay them, they brood, protect and raise.
The betas though differ a lot more and they are especially rare and uncommon. Their biology can go from an alpha or omega who wants to be in between, to both alpha and omega parts to literally no parts at all! Basically any thing in between. Itās also very taboo and they are seen as lesser so not a lot of research is done.
Gender is a lot less significant on the other hand, you can be male, female, something in between and no one will take note or treat you differently all that gender really is to them is hormones and chromosomes and that really doesnāt effect much.
No meat, not enough space for livestock, some of the farming they have is shoved in to a very small garden where they can go collect it when they so choose but most will grow their own crops.
Speaking of crops, the crop is an extension of the gastrointestinal tract which is used to store and soften food before digestion in the stomach and regurgitation of the crop is used to feed chicks before they can soften food themselves. Regurgitated food is also given to romantic and sexual partners as a ritual of trust and caring.
Their religion known as ancestry and as Iām sure you can guess is an ancestry religion and works on the beliefs that the original birds were wiser and look over us to see if weāre doing the right thing, and although thereās copious amounts of evidence that the original birds were dumber most still believe that they lived better lives and use this as an excuse for primal behaviour. Someone who dedicates their lives to this religion is called a-get this- a monk or a nun, definitely not copied of any other religion, but whatever. They also have bird heaven which they call paradise, the original birds are also called paradise birds and if you live by their standards you will fly amongst them, also did I mention that they donāt have wings, or legs they just fly in paradise where they donāt need those worldly things.
They donāt use currency very often, it was implemented but the government that they use dollars but pretty much everyone ignores it and uses a trading system instead. For example cooking and farming, a bird that farms will give ingredients to a bird that cooks in exchange for things made with those ingredients, itās very simple thatās why they like it.
Language differences and calls and songs
Male & Female*- boy/man & girl/woman
Fledglings- kids and preteens
Chicks-babies and infants
Baby-a hot person usually a female and used in the same way we say āchickā
Crop-a pouch in bird anatomy used to soften food before it makes its way to the stomach
Cloaca kissing-copulation
Flock-group, gang, assembly
*Terms like male and female, mating and other animalistic terms that would dehumanise us is normal to them as they are usual much more connected to nature and primal instincts
Birds occasionally vocalise with calls and songs to communicate, during breeding season to attract partners to show how strong and powerful they are, itās a tur usually itās an alpha looking for omegas.
