HELP MALAYSIANS GO THROUGH FLASH FLOODS
Several states in Malaysia are suffering through flash floods after days of endless heavy rain. Houses, apartments, vehicles, and properties alike have been submerged or destroyed, leaving the citizens with little to nothing to salvage. Some of them are stuck in highways for two days. Some of them are stranded on their roofs for more than 3 days with no food, clean water, electricity, and all the basic necessities they need to survive. Roads are closing and are disintegrating. Landslides are rampant.
Hereâs whatâs happening:
Twitter: (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK)
Instagram: (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK)
The government has done nothing significant to help the people. The fire fighters are only making their way into affected towns after the flood has slowed down a bit, and what they found is the missing people, who did not survive this tragedy. Theyâre not properly equipped with this, even if some of the senators have warned about how bad this was gonna get back in 26/7/2021. (LINK)
The Malaysians are doing their best they can for others, hundreds of volunteers taking it into their own hands to send over food, clothing, diapers, menstruation pads, soap and shampoos, and all the required necessities to the effected towns in bulks by boats and trucks. Theyâre saving stranded animals who their owners, with a broken heart, are forced to leave them or did not have the chance to save them.
Here are what the Malaysians are doing:

#DaruratBanjir (translation: Flood Emergency) is the main hashtag on twitter that the people have used to reach out for everyone and anyone when flash floods are still on going. This is where youâll be able to see just how disastrous everything is, just how much people are suffering. But, in the light that is the darkness, the people are doing everything they can for others, there will always be an ear or two to hear their needs and are more than happy to take action.
#KitaJagaKita (translation: We Help Us) is a hashtag for Malaysians who require help, those who want to help hands-on, or to just spread information on twitter. Itâs been used since the pandemic started back in 2020, where the people have lend a helping hand to those who are in poverty and couldnâtâcanâtâ provide for their families, and it has also using it for the flash floods as well.
But, itâs not enough. The people are doing everything they can, and theyâre not giving up. Theyâe still pushing through every obstacle in their paths, only exhaustion is starting to weight on them despite how hard they try to fight it. Malaysians need your help, our international friends, to participate if you can.
Here are some donations that non-Malaysians can do:
1) Mercy Malaysia
The person below can help if you have any problems with geo/legal restrictions, heâll be the bridge for your donations.

5) Thread of local hotlines
Hanna Alkaf, the Malaysian author to 1) The Weight of Our Sky and 2) The Girl and the Ghost has done a thread of hotline services to help with the reliefs. It contains everything you need to donate and help the people. If you have a twitter account, be sure to retweet the thread to help spread awareness!

Please reblog this post to spread more awareness!!
It breaks my heart that I donât see tumblr making an effort to help the Malaysians, we need everyone we can with this!
If you have any more fundraising links, you can just reblog and add on here.
UPDATE:
You can also donate through GlobalSadaqah to help Malaysians! Their goal is to reach MYR70,000 and theyâre already at MYR43,531. If youâre able, go check it out!

Body Language Cheat Sheet for Writers
As described by Selnickâs article:
Author and doctor of clinical psychology Carolyn Kaufman has released a one-page body language cheat sheet of psychological âtellsâ (PDF link) fiction writers can use to dress their characters.
Because I realize all my characters do is look at each other and have their eyebrows shoot up. Sometimes they even lower their eyebrows too!
Anyway thatâs why you wear wool and a life jacket babeeeyyyy
The important thing about wool is that it continues to keep you warm even when itâs soaking wet.
Other natural fibers donât do this. In fact, quite the opposite. Campers and boaters are usually familiar with the phrase, âcotton kills.â If youâre wet in cotton or linen, your clothes actually sap heat from your body.
If you sink in a lake in late October like I did today, staying warm is important. I was rescued long before I wouldâve actually died, but cold makes your muscles seize up, which isnât good if you have to swim to land.
Which brings me around to life jackets. If the waterâs cold enough, you may only have five-ten minutes until your muscles seize (today I probably had 40-60, more than enough time to get to land if I hadnât been picked up), and youâll drown.
In a life jacket, even in extremely cold water, you can float semi-conscious for perhaps another 30 minutes or so before you actually freeze to death, which is usually when someone rescues you.
Whatâs more, you probably know that moving around on land warms you up. Jumping jacks, jogging in place, etc.
In water, moving actually makes you colder. You need to stay still curled up in a ball, which you can only do in a life jacket.
In wool AND life jacket, youâre warm, and your headâs above water, which is pretty much your only and entire goal.
If youâre allergic to wool, synthetics are available specifically for this purpose. I know I always say natural fibers are the way to go, but when it comes to safety, wear what protects you!
Yep! A really simple âexperimentâ I learned as a kid and now use in my own courses is sticking your hand in ice water. Compare moving it around in the water to curling it up in a fist. The contrast is stark!
To increase your survival time in on cold water, you want to curl up! If youâre with others, you want to huddle!
Again, both are only possible when wearing a life jacket!
I know a lot of people are reblogging this for writing reference, but I like to believe that 7,000 people on this site were actually continually living in fear about this specific situation and that when the time comes, Iâve prepared them with what they need to know to survive.
Funny thing, most writers donât seem to actually know what a Firemanâs Carry is, despite its frequent appearance in fic. Most often when they call something a Firemanâs Carry, theyâre actually describing an Over-The-Shoulder Carry - i.e. with the face of the person getting carried down by the person carrying themâs butt.
The Firemanâs carry is the thing the Army and lifeguard training taught me. If you search for images of it, youâll get lots of photos of heroic and/or athletic people carrying other people (sometimes much larger than themselves) safely and effectively - even running races that way.
The other one is not particularly safe or efficient and is basically only effective for carrying a person as far as the bed you intend to toss them upon. Case in point: searching for images of that willâŚ. get you a lot of things that safe search wouldâve filtered out if it were better at context cues.
Now Iâm not going to presume I know better than writers which one better fits their characters and the tone of their fic⌠but I really wish theyâd match the right term to the right action if theyâre going to use it at all.
Firemanâs carry or Firemanâs lift - both are correct.
My Dad was a fireman during WW2 and he showed me how it worked when I was a teenager and he was no spring chicken. He carried me from the living-room to the kitchen and back, and at no time did I feel I was at risk of being dropped.
OK, he needed a bit of a sit-down afterwards - he was nearly 60 and I was a rugby-build 16 - yet he still did a correct and secure firemanâs carry about 30 years after heâd last needed to do it for real.
Itâs all to do with the âlockâ achieved by carrierâs arm and hand securing carryeeâs leg and arm - thus leaving the carrierâs other hand free to operate doors etc. -Â also that the carryee is horizontal across both of the carrierâs shoulders for better balance, not folded like a half-shut penknife with all their weight on that side.
Writer Note: The problem is what you call it in a fantasy situation without firemen, and in any situation where you need to explain the difference between a proper âfiremanâs liftâ and the âpirateâs over-shoulder carryâ.

Life would be way easier if I were easier. (Fact.)
I want to rob lumber mills and hospitals with you and just bewilder the hell out of people the way love should. (We will make everything wrong in the right way.)
I will always love you, or anyway I will always have loved you now. (And you will always be someone who was beautiful, once.)
Ask away!
what is a writer, if not a miserable little pile of ideas and half written google docs
Please write stories that are problematic.Â
Stories need conflict.
Write them to show whatâs healthy. Write them to show whatâs unhealthy.
Write them because problematic behaviors exists, and writing is a medium to explore and showâ to teach and make the reader think. Shying away from these topics only creates ignorance.Â
I see so many people telling writers to avoid anything that could be problematic, like writing about it is supporting it. They fail to see the importance of writing with depth and meaning.Â
Writing has always been about conveying thoughts and ideas without fear of censorship. Being able to present problematic situations in a healthy way is important.Â

Oh my god yes
In this post, weâve shared Marcel Proustâs questionnaire for you to use when you create characters.
The questionnaire is one of the best-known interviews used in the media today. It is thoughtful, fun, and concise, and it does a good job of showing the personality of the interviewee.
Marcel Proust (born 10 July 1871, died 18 November 1922) was a French novelist who is best known for writing Remembrance of Things Past, a novel published in seven parts.
Proustâs Questionnaire
At the end of the nineteenth century, when he was 13-years-old, he answered a questionnaire in an English-language confession album belonging to his friend Antoinette Felix-Faure, entitled âAn Album to Record Thoughts, Feelings, etc.â. In those days, answering lists like this was a popular past time. They revealed the tastes and aspirations of the taker.
The original manuscript of Proustâs answers was found in 1924. It was auctioned on 27 May 2003 for âŹ102,000.
Proustâs questionnaire is an excellent way for you to interview the most important characters in your novel or short story. They may tell you something you donât already know.
Proustâs Questionnaire â 35 Questions Every Character Should Answer
iâm sorry iâm so mad about that app. people defending it really have me riled up. as a writer, i donât ask readers for comments or kudos or hits or money. fanfiction is a gift we give each other and the one thing i want is to have my stories hosted where i want, in the way i want. thatâs literally not that much to ask.
and i know itâs not âââhostingâââ the content. itâs still presenting the content to readers in a format and place i do not want it to be, with ads i donât like or want, for money i donât get or expect. itâs not that much to ask to just respect authorsâ wishes on thisâand you might be fine with it, but a lot of us arenât. come on.Â
They arenât hosting the content, but they are charging money to access it. Making money off fanfic violates the original creatorâs copyright and is ILLEGAL in the US. This exposes not only the developer, but AO3/OTW and the authors to legal action. THIS IS NOT OKAY. Every author whose fic has been scraped is at risk of getting sued and needs to be SCREAMING THEIR HEADS OFF ABOUT IT. (This is why you are no longer allowed to link to a Patreon from AO3.)
So not only is the Fanfic Pocket Archive Library app stealing peopleâs work for a profit, but it also makes it impossible for anyone who doesnât have an AO3 account to leave kudos or comments, which is incredibly disheartening. I hate talking about the readerâs responsibility to let the author know they liked the story, but itâs important needs to be brought up. Writing is hard and it sucks to spend hours on a fic and have no one read it. But what sucks even more is when people read it but donât leave a comment or kudos. To authors, that sends the message that you hated our work and itâs hard to keep posting when we think everything we put up is horrible and not worth reading.
This app is synced to AO3, so I am assuming when someone clicks on a story in the app, it will show up as a hit on the site. I could be wrong though. I was able to test kudos and comments but I didnât see a change in hits. That might just be because of the way hits work though. But it makes sense for a click in the app to sync with a click on the site, and if that is how it works, then authors easily could see an even larger gap between hit counts and kudos.
This app is bullshit and I hope it is either taken down or demonetized soon, because Iâm afraid itâs going to have a larger impact than the offense of stealing our work for money.
AO3, as a non-profit, still requires donations to help keep their site functional, so I do apologize for being a bit angry and apprehensive of letting someone create an app for people who donât want to make an AO3 account.
Whether or not the Fanfic Pocket app is asking for money for their database/coding or the app itself, I really do not care. If someone took artwork from a site that you knowingly posted work to and compiled it all onto one app without your knowledge, therefore taking possible comments, subscriptions, kudos, from the ACTUAL artist you wouldnât be upset?
The only way you can do any of that through the app is TO CREATE AN AO3 ACCOUNT..... just create an account on an already mobile friendly site?
đ¨ATTENTIONđ¨
All Writers Published on Ao3:
This app, "Fanfic Pocket Archive Library", is lifting all public content from Ao3 and making it available through a service they profit from.
Your work has been stolen and is being used to make money for a third party.
^above are the ways in which the app makes money off of Ao3 content. The developer is called Simple Soft Alliance. Here's the app's Terms and Conditions.
Any fanfiction that can be accessed without a password on Ao3 is already available in this app. Yours, mine, every fan creator's. Whether this is illegal I do not know, but it is certainly unethical and needs to be fought. Ao3 is a site of unparalleled integrity and shows the utmost respect to creators, so this content grab is an even bigger slap in the face for that reason.
đ¨Please flag/report this app in your app store. đ¨
đŠGoogle Playstore link

Feel free to contact Ao3 as well to alert them to this issue. Let's take em down, folks. In the meantime, you can put your Ao3 in private mode to prevent any more data theft.
Please reblog and tag your writer friends. Signal boost this.
If the app developer wasnât making money I wouldnât care, but as it is all my fics are on this app and Iâm NOT happy. Reported and also reported to Ao3
email someone got - reported on the twitter feed. looks like as authors weâll have to individually report that our content is stolen on the app.Â

apple:Â https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/appstorenotices/#/contacts?lang=en
if you are a fanfic writer posting on ao3 and this app has your fics on there, IT IS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.Â
so hereâs what you can do. go to the google report form or the apple report form and say that it is copyright infringement. youâll have to just show your ao3 profile link to prove it.Â
this is how iâm phrasing it, but please modify what you say so it doesnât look like a mass complaint and ruin the legitimacy of the claim:Â
âI post my fanfiction works on www.archiveofourown.com, a platform that hosts transformative works. This app is reposting all of my writing content (at least 29 of my works) without my knowledge or consent. I did not give permission to the developer of this app to do so. Since I have copyrights to my own fanworks, as well do all writers that this app is reposting without their permission, I strongly urge the Apple Store to consider the legality of this app, which basically exists just to repost/copy all the works of fanfiction authors of archiveofourown.com.â
again, PHRASE IT IN YOUR OWN WAY but this is just an example of how to go about it, if the âexplanation for complaintâ seems intimidating to you.
i strongly urge every ao3 author to report this, and get this app down. otherwise, as AO3 suggests, weâll have to issue DCMA Takedowns. those are a bitch to file. they take a lot of time and a lot of fees. hopefully, enough of us reporting this to apple/google will simply ban the app, and we can put this whole mess behind us.Â
FYI for all fic writers
