Summary/thoughts: Humanity is in a strict caste system with alphas at the top and Epsilon at the bottom. There is systematic indoctrination and distractions to keep everyone in place. One man starts to question his society.

Its an important part of dystopian lit but theres def problems with it. Its very dated in alot of ways and its not as shocking now (even though I find it to be). Content warning for the book as well.

Things Fall Apart 3.5/5

Summary/thoughts: Follows a leader of a fictional Igbo clan in Nigeria and the struggles he and his community face with the forced colonization.

I am very thankful to have a curriculum that included this for an English class. Being introduced to different people, cultures, religions, and races in such a humanizing and empathic way is critical to education.

The Time Travelers Wife 2.5/5

Summary/thoughts: A dude travels back in time uncontrollably and occasionally meets his wife throughout her life. Its not great when you think about it for more then a minute. I personally think its important to read book to form your own opinion instead of someone on the internet telling you its bad.

roald dahl was antisemitic and misogynistic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife (and was racist as well as antisemitic!). hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways they’re fucking dead it’s not like you’re enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think they bleed into the books so uh keep an eye out for that

Could you imagine making your own movie, making like 20 million dollars, and then going “awesome, now to install a DVD duplicating machine in my house and personally burn copies by hand like a medieval monk preserving sacred texts”

Like I need people to understand the mental image here of a multimillionaire internet creator personally overseeing DVD production in his own house like he’s running an underground bootleg operation out of a basement in 2007.

It’s weirdly charming because there’s something very “old internet” about it, this energy of “I made a thing, and now I will physically hand it to people myself like an artisan at a craft fair.”

The man really said: “The future of cinema is me standing next to a humming disc burner at 2am”

And like... I can't help but believe he's onto something

the stars are dead. it doesn't matter that simon can see them. they're just dead light fading away. simon is dead from the minute he was welded in that sub. it doesn't matter that we can see him.

I like how Mark & his team were able to work in the frog (it’s called “frog” in the game files) from the ending of the game into the movie, by having it’s blank white eye rush past Simon in the nightmare sequence.

I love how they were able to expand on and explain oddities in the game such as “why does the SM-13 -a cheap burner sub- have a valuable computer system in it?” To download the blackbox data from the SM-8!

“How can the camera take pictures if light can’t pass through blood?” It uses X-Rays instead!

“Wouldn’t that mean it slowly irradiates Simon every time it’s used?” Yes!

“Wait, doesn’t that also mean that it would only show the bones of a creature, and not the whole thing; meaning you can’t tell if it’s alive or dead?” Also yes!

This movie‘s attention to detail is insane. 10/10.

Something something the oxygen meter going up and Simon somehow having enough air for days longer then he should and how the sub essentially becomes a part of Simon and how blood carries oxygen and what is the purpose of a real Iron lung anyways and iron is what carries oxygen in human blood after all and the blood trying to make him one with the ship because it was already breathing for him and the eldritch forces genuinely can't understand why he's still fighting to maintain his autonomy and sense of self in the face of something so much bigger than him, when it would just be so much easier and less painful to allow himself to be subsumed

Something about the indomitable human spirit in the face of something that's so incomprehensible that it can make metal breathe for you

Iron Lung is great bc it asks the question what if the sacrificial lamb was evil. What if the lamb thought itself evil. What if everyone else thought the lamb evil. What if the lamb wasn't evil what if the lamb is just a lamb, bleeting desperately to escape its undue sacrifice. What if the lamb knew it was a sacrifice from the start. What if the lamb just wanted to live. What if the lamb wanted to live so fucking bad. What if the lamb wanted the flock to live more. What if the lamb accepts its own sacrifice, leans into the glinting knife, in the hopes that the flock survives.
