I wasn't sure whether to write this or not, but given all the hate Pedro is getting, I feel I have to.
As a fan of his, it saddens me that he liked that anti-Argentina post; whether consciously or unconsciously, it validates the person who made that reel—a reel attacking a country that is currently being labeled racist by the fucking entire world. It hurts to read the things people are writing to him. It already hurt when Chileans themselves wrote such things, but it hurts even more coming from people in my own country, because he was so beloved here.
To anyone who thinks we’re exaggerating: you have no idea about the hate campaign that’s been whipped up—people attacking Argentines on streets around the world simply because they believe everything they see on TikTok. Even actor Samuel L. Jackson has said that supporting Argentina means supporting racists, claiming we are historically the most racist country in the world... The context? The Argentine national football team doesn't have any Black players... Well, how do we explain Argentine history to Mr. Jackson, ...that it was one of the first countries in the Americas to abolish slavery, and that there are no Afro-descendants because, during the era of the invasions, the "freedom of the womb" policy was in place, leading to greater racial mixing. So, for that man to casually say something like that without knowing anything—well, he should just stick to making movies, or at the very least, pick up a history book. An actor living in a country dominated by Trump, amidst everything happening with ICE? It’s a joke that tells itself.
We’re the villains, and the rest of the world are all saints... all because of a few TikTok videos.
So, if you think we’re overreacting to a "like," sadly, we aren't. It’s a shame Pedro joined in with that "like," especially since I’ve heard him say part of his family is Argentine. Next time, he should look more closely at what he "likes," because hate only breeds more hate. And I say this as someone who likes him—but less TikTok, Pedro, please.
As for going and writing a bunch of horrible things to him—honestly, I wouldn't do that. It was just a "like," but it was a "like" that hurt us, at the very least.
I suppose the hate toward my country will continue for a while longer, since that’s what’s entertaining and generates the most "likes" right now. If anyone wants to meet an Argentine, I’m here—ready to share some mate 🧉 and have a nice chat. Life isn't what happens on social media, and certainly not on TikTok. I’m saddened by all this, but I’m standing firm; that’s how I was taught in this country—never to back down. And we are giants!
