Obtaining an Overseas License is Melbourne
THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS:
There is a lot of information available online on converting an overseas (Indian) license to a Victorian driver license. The idea behind this post is to make things simpler for those who want to pursue obtaining a license without much hassle.
In most scenarios obtaining a Victorian Driver License using your overseas license is very straight forward.
1. Verify your overseas license with VicRoads:
Call VicRoads and book your appointment. This usually takes 15~30 Days from the day you call in to make an appointment, so make sure you book in advance. Get your license verified.
One of the pages in VicRoads’ Roads to Solo Driving Manual States that:
If there is a difference in names between the category A and B evidence documents or if you have changed your name, one document that shows your correct name, for example a marriage or Change of Name certificate.
Just make sure the name on your Passport and Driver License is the same.
If at all it is an option try to get it changed from India, because its a lot of work from here.
In south India we prefer initials over a surname. Read up about the culture of using initials in Southern India. This added a whole new level of complexity. Well, I would be a good living / walking example: name on the license could be Mithun S and the name on the Passport could be Mithun Selvan. In most cases this will be rejected by the License Verification Officer at vicRoads.
So in order to get this right:
a. Get a Notarized document stating that the person on the Drivers License and the Passport are the same. Notary and Attesting of documents will cost you any around $88 to $132 in Melbourne CBD area. This will take around a days time.
b. Next, you will have to apostille the document along with the attested copies of passport and overseas driver license. More info about how to apostille a document here. This will take about 5 working days.
Well, I did seek assistance from a gentleman by the name Charles Reichman who was very helpful and assisted me in doing both steps a and b for me. Contact his office here. This whole process took me about 4 working days.
c. Book an appointment with VFS Global, this process is required because as per VicRoads you will have to get the notarized / apostille document attested by Indian Consulate. You can usually get an appointment the following day. This process will take about 15~30 Minutes of your time. Just make sure you take additional copies of your attested passport copy. This process took us about 3 working days.
d. Yet to attend the License Verification.
2. Road Law Knowledge Test
Call VicRoads, book your Test, clear it and get your learner license.
I booked my test a week after license verification.
