Writing prompt? No. Writing much delayed.
Avowed - Murals by Rita Yuwei Li
i love when people say "i’d read your book!" like girl me too unfortunately i haven’t written it yet because i am trapped in a cycle of procrastination and the feeling of impending doom
Wanted to try this armor out so they'd be matching 😌 and uhh wow yeah he seemed pretty into it 😳
My "Sweetie can I help you?" collection is growing......
rereading your own fics/wips is a very slippery slope into finding out you actually have to finish your fics if you want them finished
I just think they're neat 😌
plus bonus Dess portrait because I'm love them
Me at 3AM thinking about a new plot line for my multichapter fic I haven't still written a single word of:
i thought that said in spite of god
that too. omnipotent deities wanted us kept apart, but fat chance. Nothing can stop us! Nothing will stop us.
honestly sometimes there's no better feeling than rereading a fic you've written and coming out of it going, "yeah that actually this DOES slap. exactly what i wanted to read. fucking nailed it."
Not pictured: My shrimpy elven godlike envoy giggling and kicking their feet
Being obsessed with your own ocs is so so good for you i seriously can't recommend it enough
The only downside is that you have to do Everything around here
Midsummer knight series so far
Happy anniversary to Kai for continuing to be a sweet, empathetic, iridescent, queer, pro-abortion, big breasted, cleavage-having fish man.
posting this here for myself as a writing aid but maybe someone else will find it useful. i think mr kai avowed has to be in his late 40s. he never gives any exact years, only durations, so i'm mostly working backwards from when we know avowed to take place
but basically the only facts we have pointing us to specific timelines are that he joined up as soon as he was able, after he deserted in the deadfire he spent 10 years working as a mercenary before settling in thirdborn, and he's been in paradis at the start of avowed for the past 6 years following an indeterminate amount of time drifting
2831 - The Envoy arrives in the living lands 2825 - Kai settles in Paradis 2823 - Tama dies 2819 - Kai arrives in Thirdborn, joins up with tama ~ten years jumping from merc company to merc company~ 2809 - Kai deserts the Rauataian navy in the deadfire 2801 - Kai joins up with the Rauataian navy, starts training and at some point is sent to the Deadfire Archipelago 2783 - Kai is born (assuming Rauataian adulthood is reached at an age similar to many human cultures)
bold is based on exact info given in avowed, italics is speculation
That puts him, in my head at least, at around 48 years old.
Using only the confirmed tenures of his various exploits and nothing else, he's at minimum 33. but he talks himself as if the various gaps between confirmed things are longer, meandering, and--in the case of his desertion--took him too long to realize what he needed to do. so it makes sense to start with 33 as a base age and add time based on how much time you think he'd have spent serving for rauatai before desertion, working with tama in thirdborn, and then drifting)
he also claims to have been a "middling carpenter" at some point, so your mileage may vary whether you wanna slap that in there somewhere or assume he's lying (as he states that he does to the envoy)
OK SO
aumaua age more slowly than humans. in eora folk are said to mature to young adulthood around 17 while aumaua have until 21. that's just fine bc i think it would make sense for rauatai military training to begin early, the equivalent of specialized secondary schooling in adolescence
and kai being 48 is equivalent to a folk ~40. more at 6
thanks to @silver-gm for tipping me off about this chart in the POE Pen and Paper Guide
Sorry to rehash this like a year later, I only recently finished my first playthrough—and immediately started my second lmao
But playing this second time, I chose a new (to me) dialogue option when the envoy is first getting to know Kai, and unlocked a line with a tiny nugget of more data toward his age:
Kai: "I joined up with the Rauataian navy as soon as I was old enough. I was part of our campaign to establish a foothold in the Deadfire Archipelago."
Envoy: "That must have been before you restyled yourselves as the Royal Deadfire Company."
Kai: "Not that long before, but yeah."
Important to note that his tone's a bit snippy when he says that last line, like he knows the envoy is teasing him about being old (Dess was, but hey, he wasn't supposed to notice). I took that to mean that it was quite some time before; also I don't think he ever refers to having been "in/with the Company" when he talks about those days. So I think he deserted before the name was changed, or very soon after—short enough that he never got into the habit of calling it that.
So, according to the wiki, Rauatai's campaign in the Deadfire began in 2758, and the name was changed in 2814. Going by that life phases chart, aumaua become/are considered young adults at 21, which I would think is the youngest they'd be allowed to join the navy (maybe they can start some training younger than that, but it doesn't seem like they're so desperate for troops they're allowing children to fight or anything). So the absolute youngest he could be—if he joined up right at 21, served for like a couple of days I guess, the company got renamed and he immediately deserted—is 38? This doesn't leave a whole lot of wiggle room for the about-10 years of mercenary work, getting to Thirdborn, meeting (and falling in love with, and losing) Tama, and 6 years in Paradis, but I guess it's technically possible. I don't find it likely.
Especially since he says he was in the Deadfire "to establish a foothold". That reads, to me, like he was there at the beginning of the campaign, or near to it. Avowed takes place in 2831; if he was in the Deadfire at the very beginning, and if he did join up right at 21, then the oldest he can be—is 94. I...also don't find this very likely lmao. Again, technically possible, but I don't think he'd be making "I sound like my grandpa" jokes and running around fighting gods and monsters with the envoy & co if he really was that close to the "venerable" end of the life span chart 😅
So all in all, maybe this isn't very helpful! But maybe someone else will get something out of this, I hope! I thought it was interesting at least, and useful to have an age range to somewhat narrow things down to. And 48 certainly fits within that range!
I think I personally read him a little older, maybe 60 or so, because a lot of his little comments about having achey knees and whatnot feel very "guy who's just realizing he's middle aged now and is mad about it" to me. And he has a line, I think when you ask what he thinks of Giatta, where he wistfully says "I remember being her age", or something like that, and it made me read him as at a different life stage than she is at 30. Plus I just like the idea of my 100+ year old elven envoy feeling like they're robbing the cradle by dating a middle aged fishman 💁🏽
A limerick. Based on a true story.
