Another Path: Irony and Conflict
Going through a reread, something rather revealing about Paulo's inner conflict is made apparent simply by the premise of "Another Path". The real reason things went the way they did was because Paulo felt obliged to defend his 'manhood' through serial casual sex. However, Paulo doesn't fantasize about a world where he continued bonding with Lucy after being considerate of her vulnerability. On the contrary, he daydreams about a world where the desirable alternative is accomplished the same way the real series of events were set awry: prioritizing sex before feelings. In his fantasy, Paulo wasn't emotionally strong enough to refuse Lucy's advances, and ultimately this leads to the circumstances from which his relationship with Lucy grows and flourishes. Paulo's desire to be emotionally genuine and cultivate a caring relationship conflicts with his raw desire to fulfill expectations of masculinity and his sexual desire. The product of this conflict is Another Path.
The blog might be dead, but I’m not
A long time ago, I used to enjoy picking apart all the details of the comic, analyzing it the way so many literature classes over the years have taught me to. Then, at some point, I just stopped. I don't know exactly when it happened, but although the dissection and analysis stopped, my love for the comic never did. Bittersweet Candy Bowl got me through a lot of tough times, and I've done more rereads than I can count. To some degree, the amount I enjoyed the dynamic relationships of the characters simply made me happy and helped me forget about anything that troubled me in real life. Part of it was also that I've always felt that the quality of any media or art can be judged based on its ability to evoke real emotion. BCB made me laugh, it made me angry, it made me cry. I believe these are qualities that a large portion of the fan base loves about the comic, but the overwhelming reason this comic has essentially saved my life before is more specific than general emotion, art, and beauty. Sympathy and experience. A lot of the struggles that Lucy went through, I shared over the course of my life. Being afraid of being completely alone but still pushing everyone away. Being told that something about your behavior is wrong when still very young. Being abusive and insulting, but desperately hoping the people around you are able to notice your compassion and accept it Being competitive but ultimately very introverted. Being told you're a bad person, selfish, or undeserving of love by someone or many someones you thought recognized that compassion. Being unsure whether they're right. There have been many times where I've felt betrayed, rejected, reviled, and neglected. Sometimes these were feelings that came from outside, but often they came from within. A million people can tell me I'm a good person, and I am deaf to their praise. Yet, one person tells me I'm a bad person, and I take it deeply to heart. I think it's because there's already a voice within telling me I'm bad, manifesting my fears as self-hatred and self-pity. But then I see Lucy. I know she's a fictional character, but regardless I strongly sympathize with her. The difference is, I see that her pain and her actions are often mistakes. There are people who love her, there is a reason to live, and she is a good person. I see all her friends over the years notice her compassion and her true feelings as it eeks out subtley, and I see how much pain her leaving causes them. It inspires me to keep going, to search for people who can understand me and accept me, rather than assume that I'm unacceptable. By now, I think I've found a couple of those people. But I don't just read when the times are tough. I read whenever it comes out, driven in part because I eagerly hope for the day that my new OTP can come true: Lucy x Lucy. I've been adamant about numerous different pairings over the years, but in the end I think that Lucy has the capacity to be happy with anyone if they love and support her and she can love herself. I'm far too shy to ever be direct about this, but thank you Taeshi. Thank you so much for what you do, you've helped save this poor soul, and I know I'm not the only one.
Again, I apologize
Although I have been busy with work, the main reason I have not been analyzing these recent chapters is because they are purely captivating and it is clear what is happening. There is no need to think of foreshadowing when these seem to be events foreshadowed. Perhaps once this climactic point of the story has been passed, I will continue to analyze.
WHERE'S ALL THE ANALYSIS
I've been busy with a lot of work, I apologize for the lack of posting that can be seen over the course of the past couple of weeks (or months, I really have lost track). There really isn't much to deeply analyze in December, it really just leaves one on the edge of their seat. The most one can ponder is the strangeness of Mike sudden twist in emotion and characterization, Lucy's apparent scheme to destroy Mike's relationship ("Hell has no fury like a woman scorned"), and the probably long-forgotten attitude Abbey had about Christmas. I can also say that Mike is quite egotistical in this scenario, for Paulo would not leave Lucy, therefore David would not, and also Jess and Rachel would remain behind for her. Lucy would not lose all of her friends, and it is quite possible that Daisy would alternate because even though she still does love "Mikie", she and Lucy are still close friends. Mike has mislead Lucy greatly, and by doing so he has sealed his own fate. As for Abbey, I'm probably the only person still having that thought in their head (albeit buried below the surge of thought and emotion produced by the current scenario).
Sorry for the "reblogging" of this picture, I assure you it won't become a habit... but this picture is just so sweet; I am a sucker for Lucy X Paulo. On a completely unrelated note on the current status of the chapter, I am glad it has changed from two people moping around next to each other to Lucy trying to find a solution. This is an excellent change, and it could be the turning point towards a mended friendship... or the beginning of a domino effect in which the 40 page chapter unfolds into increased angst and an even larger divide between Mike and Lucy. As for the chapter in general, I am still wondering if some Abbey drama, as hinted at towards the beginning, will ensue.
David
I don't think I've covered the 2-D comic relief dog. This is most likely because I feel that although he is quite funny, he is like an obstacle trying to block Paulo from becoming more mature. His conversations with Paulo are typically inappropriate, immature, or problematic to a group reading the comic. His actions led to that whole awkward "Jess and Rachel slept with him to get revenge on Tess, pissing off Tess and Lucy but also introducing Jasmine to further punch Lucy X Paulo shippers in the face" series of events... I'm just saying, there is a price to pay for David's comic relief.
Mike: December
He is just... mean as of page 12. I understand that he's upset because he thinks Lucy confessed her love expecting him to drop everything and love her back. Also, I can understand him being anger at her talking with Augustus seeing as Mike and the others in their friend group have many reasons to dislike him. However, he is simply radiating "jerk" here, and the excuses just can't continue to apply.
Augustus: Is what he said on page 10 of December right?
Personally, although she should be sad and angry, Augustus is right in that it isn't THE end of the world. Although it might seem incredibly insensitive, Augustus seems to have some really big problems in his life that go beyond angst and he has a right to be annoyed when other people complain about problems that he probably wishes he could have instead.
Opinions
I would like to express the fact that this blog is my opinion, and if you disagree I strongly encourage you to speak up, anonymously or with name. I believe in Paulo X Lucy, Mike X Sandy, and Daisy X Abbey to some extent. But earlier in the story I was Mike X Lucy, and Paulo X Tess. I was once even Mike X Daisy (I know, shocking!), opinions change and opinions should be heard.
isn't paulo clearly meant for daisy? and that at some point their relationship will evolve into something more?
Isn't Paulo clearly meant for Daisy? Well, although you may have much evidence from very early on in the movies when we first discover Paulo's fear of dog barks and other hints, currently Paulo considers Daisy like a sister. Before he would date Daisy he would date Tess, Jasmine, and Lucy, and Daisy would date Abbey or obsess over Mike before dating Paulo. This makes this relationship highly unlikely, although slightly possible.
It's easy not to like PauloxLucy, though. One is an overemotional teenage girl and the other is a promiscuous son of a whore that is exempted of all his dickery because he has a 'golden heart' or something along those lines. So, I propose a question: Why do you like PauloxLucy? Why should anyone else? How is it less shallow than MikexLucy? Both are stupid, but I would like your opinion.
Mike and Lucy is a ridiculous concept based on earlier notions because Mike is happily dated Sandy and has no interest in Lucy. Honestly, Paulo did have a "golden heart" if you were to notice the part where in an attempt to impress Lucy we was corrupted by others to become that "womanizing asshole". People like me simply see Paulo under his corruption, and at that point you see he does have a golden heart. Honestly, I believe in Paulo X Lucy because Paulo and Lucy are my favorite characters and I would love for them both to be happy. This is why I am also not opposed to Mike X Lucy and Paulo X Jasmine. The problem is, Mike X Lucy is completely unavailable at this point, and the best "shipping" for Lucy would be Paulo X Lucy. This is all in my opinion.-Dan
