Cody doesn’t really get angry.
But anger, a true, boiling rage, has only struck him once or twice in his lifetime. Rage provides clarity, but it can make a person sloppy. He’s drilled this lesson into shinies a hundred times over.
The lesson flies out of his head as he takes a heavy step forward. He snags Obi-Wan by the front of his tunics, dragging the General closer. In the back of his mind, a version of him who still answers to CC-2224 is screaming about insubordination and decommissioning and ‘Good soldiers follow orders.’
“What were you about to say? Hurt? Maimed? Captured? Killed? Go on, General. Tell me precisely how you planned to finish that sentence.”
Obi-Wan’s arms come up, but he makes no move to break Cody’s grip, or even to shift his chest armor, which has rucked up around his neck.
Instead, he gently sets both of his gloved hands against Cody’s armored forearms.
“Cody,” he says softly. “I didn’t make this decision lightly.”
“You shouldn’t be making it at all. You were the one who told me we were a team, remember?”
The words feel like blaster bolts streaking past Cody’s teeth, hot and intended to do damage.
And they hit their mark if the way Obi-Wan’s expression drops is any indication.
“We are a team,” he says, heat simmering in his voice. “But when one of us isn’t seeing the full picture, it falls to the other to fill in the blanks. And in this instance, I must be on the frontlines to prevent mass casualties. I’m not worth…”
“Not worth what?” Cody feels every brother on the bridge turn to them now. He shouldn’t be speaking this way. But neither should Obi-Wan. The man is a Jedi, attuned to life and the Force and peace. He shouldn’t be so blasé about potentially sacrificing himself.
