Basic Tools of the Craft
There are tools that are essential to every religion. And they are usually ceremonial tools that aid in a practitioner’s spiritual journey. Buddhists have their bells, while Christians have their cross. While not a requirement to each one practicing a religion, having the tools strengthen your dedication.
Witchcraft has a wide range of tools, and most are usually those that are placed on an altar, and each almost always represents an element.
What you decide to procure will really depend on your beliefs and what you are comfortable with. It is also important to know that your tools should be treated with respect and reverence since each represents a divine element.
Here are just some of the tools a witch could have at his or her person or altar:
THE ATHAME An Athame is a dagger traditionally with a black handle that is used to cast a circle. It should never be used for cutting or to cause physical harm. The athame represents masculine energy and the element of fire.
THE CHALICE The chalice witches use can come in a goblet styles, or simply any mug and cup, and is used to hold water or wine, which is to be drank after a ritual. The chalice on your altar also represents the element of water.
THE WAND The wand that you use can come in any material that you feel a connection to: wood, bone, or metal. A witch’s wand is very personal, so much so that many Wiccans prefer to fashion themselves their own wand that suits their taste and represents their personality or character. Another option is to buy a Magic Wand. The wand is used to direct energies during a ritual, and represents the element of air.
THE PENTACLE The pentacle is a very powerful and protective symbol in Wicca. On an altar, it can come in the form of either a pendant or a platen. The pentacle represents earth, and is used to cleanse yourself, your surroundings, and all other items on your altar.
You can also use a Pentacle necklace on your altar.
THE CAULDRON Like the chalice, the cauldron represents the element of water. A cauldron can hold many things like water, herbs, incense, and candles, and is very useful when it comes to rituals involving burning and creating small fires. The preferred material for the pot-bellied cauldrons is cast iron. This is mainly due to the fact that cast iron cauldrons can take the heat and don’t crack under high temperatures.
THE BELLS Bells are used to mark passages in a ritual. Try taking a look at spells, you’ll notice most require you to ring a bell once or twice, and also ask you to ring your bell to mark the beginning and the end of a ritual.
THE CANDLES Candles represent the element of fire. A pair of candles also symbolizes the God and the Goddess.
THE BOWLS Having a bowl on your altar represents the element of earth. A bowl can hold water, sea salt, and oils. It is important to have a bowl that can hold sea salt, since a small bowl of sea salt on your altar can cleanse your other tools for magick, and also any possession you have that you feel is holding negative energy.
Smudging bowls are essential for magickal working.
INCENSE
Incense symbolizes the element of air. It is used to clear energy, cleanse, and call in energies.
THE CRYSTALS Each crystal holds a different energy. Crystals enhance the power of your spells, and keeping a variety of crystals on your altar will help you in various rituals.
THE BROOM A broom is very symbolic of sweeping energy and keeping negative and unwanted energies out of your space.
There are so many more tools in Witchcraft that you can use to enhance your spiritual journey and your magickal workings. What I mentioned are just the essentials, and you can add to them as you progress in your journey.
Before you begin using each tool, it is important that you clear and cleanse it. And make sure that you treat each with respect and care, as it represents a divine element. Some witches, including myself, don’t allow others to touch their tools and crystals and supplies to prevent any unwanted energy from absorbing into these things. You can make the choice yourself for your items obviously, but keep in mind that you should keep your tools and supplies full of light energies!
I'm very interested in rune magic and rune casting but I know next to nothing about it. Is there somewhere I could start? Something I could read? Anything you could tell me to help me start out? Love your blog by the way! You help me envision the gods as they probably are now!
We have very few contemporary historical records of what casting runes / viking age witchcraft / divination was like. Sadly that also means that legitimate, credible sources for learning some historic rune magic basics are rare.
Another tricky thing is that I’m not a practising neopagan and can’t really say anything from my own experience. But I do have three pretty solidly fact-based recommendations!
The Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft
The museum holds documents and examples of long folklore traditions regarding Icelandic magical practices. They’re not the only type out there, not even the only type in the Nordic countries, and of course a museum website is not the same as asking museum staff. But their website is very good and easy to navigate, and there is good history information. The site is also available in English.
A Little Book About the Runes by Gudrun Publishing
I’m always going on about this one, but it’s just so brilliant. Basically an ABC of the Younger Futhark, a very cute little book indeed. It’s also a very informative and easy to manage introduction to what runes are, what they look like and when they were used. It includes a rune poem with old medieval riddles and the meaning of each rune’s name, and because the Younger Futhark is smaller than the Elder, starting with these might be easier. It’s for sale on Gudrun’s web shop in at least German, English, Swedish, Icelandic.
Runornas Litteratur or “The Literature of Runes”, a web presentation by Litteraturbanken
LB is a co-project between several Royal Swedish state academies and the Fenno-Swedish Literature Society. It’s sadly only in Swedish, but there’s a chapter on the suspected magical properties of runes under subtitle “MAGI OCH MYSTIK”, magic and mysticism. I don’t have the time or energy to translate it just now, but I can return to it next week if you can’t read Swedish. The entire text is here and can also be downloaded as a PDF.
I’d say that these types of articles and publications are about as “factual” as we’re ever going to get.
We know that the modern idea of rune casting is indeed modern. There are no viking age guides for carving little rune pendants and throwing them around, nor is there a rule saying “only Elder Futhark is magical” in the Eddas or anywhere else. It comes from the 19th-20th century occultism. But that doesn’t make those practices any more wrong. The power of runes is in the power of writing and intention, simple as that.
So if someone says that “this is the TRUE AND ONLY way for runes to be used magically and you can’t do it YOUR WAY”, whether they talk of throwing around rune pendants or banning that from use, they’re lying. They’re either lying to boost their own ego or just lying because they didn’t bother to do enough research to realise that they’re wrong.
There is no absolute truth anymore, probably never was because of regional and even family differences in practices, and even if there was I doubt we can find it.But by all means if anyone has some nice tips of current Norse-inspired witchcraft trends, feel free to reblog and share!

Centering yourself and connecting to your divination tools
I can’t take complete credit for this method, but I’ve adapted it to my needs. Feel free to deviate from this if you’re more comfortable with it
Cleanse and balance your cards. You can do this by smoke cleansing, prayer, blowing on your cards, tapping on them, charging them with a crystal or candle, or simply visualizing a white cleansing energy touching them.
Thank them for their help and call upon your spiritual guides to guide you through your readings. Make sure to thank your guides as well
Visualize roots going from your feet deep into the earth. Feel the earths energy grounding you and filling your body with peace
Visualize the sky/universe/angels/deities/gods pouring light into your crown and filling your body with divine light, opening all your chakras and centering around your third eye and heart
Feel the energy of the universe flow through you and hold your cards close to your heart or third eye, imagining all of your energy that you have been given going into your cards or other divination tool. Fill it with love and light that radiates out of you and is absorbed by your tools.
In a meditative state, begin your reading. There is no expectations, no right or wrong, simply what is and what isnt. Listen to your intuition and use the book if necessary. Dont feel bad about using references, its how we learn and even professionals need some help sometimes!
Try to do this method every time that you use your cards/tools to keeo them connected to you. Carry them with you. Sleep next to or near them. Put them on your altar or in a safe sacred space with your energy. Keep this sacred place clean or as well kept as you can manage to ensure your cards dont pick up miscellaneous energies.
Happy Divining! I hope this helps whether youre new or old to tarot!
A Secret Witches Guide to Concealing your craft
Make sure practicing witchcraft in your home does not put you in any imminent danger!
Drink tea - A mundane thing, make it a daily thing in order to make people less suspicious. Say short incantations while stirring in your honey.
Keep a small plain notebook to use as your grimoire - Use this to write all your witchy ideas in.
Find a well concealed hiding place to put all of your witchy stuff - Put anything that you want to keep concealed in here.
Create a portable altar - One easy enough to take down and hide quickly. Draw an altar in your grimoire for a simple portable altar.
Meditate - Sit somewhere you won’t be disturbed and meditate. You don’t need any special supplies to meditate therefore, it is easy to hide.
Paint your nails to match your intent
Glamour your Clothes
Braid your hair while say an incantation
Trace sigils around your room - Use your fingers so they remain discreet and charge them with intent.
Glamour a piece of jewelry to wear daily
Keep plants and candles in your room - No one will draw conclusions if these are in your room.
Decorate a shoe box to dedicate to your practice - Put any witchy things you want if you are unable to find a place to hide your stuff.
Use knot magick when tying your shoes
Cleanse your room and home using intentions
Water your plants with growth spells - Speak to them while doing this in order to help them grow.
Do your casting in a discreet location outside - this way no one can interrupt you when you are in the middle of a ritual.
Use color magick when picking out what you want to wear
Use scented candles - Although lots of candles may raise suspicion, if they are scented they won’t draw much attention.
Write sigils in lotion - Cover your body in lotion sigils, in a couple minutes they will fade away and not be visible.
Stir counter clockwise - In your baking or your tea to banish negative energy.
Use playing cards instead of tarot cards
Go for hikes - A way to be with nature and not raise any suspicion.
Clean your room - This is the equivalence of cleansing your room.
May the moon light your path!

SPELL: Remembering & Recalling Dreams
During the Basic Spellwriting class that Salt hosted tonight on the server, the WAMILY members gathered and constructed a spell together. This was an amazing team effort and the collaboration produced a simple, yet effective spell. This is what they came up with!
PURPOSE OF THE SPELL:
To dream deeply and vividly, and to recall it when you wake.
SPECIAL TIMING:
During the New Moon; and/or on a Saturday (a day of relaxation.) Bonus points if you can score a New Moon on a Saturday!
Each New Moon is a brand new beginning. It offers the opportunity to make a change, to re-orient yourself, or to conjure a new aspect of yourself and your life into being. The energy of the new moon is great for initiating a new project or the start of an adventure. And with it being hidden in darkness, there are parallels drawn between the darker sides of the moon as well as our minds.
ITEMS NEEDED:
Soft Pajamas: for comfort.
Fluffy Pillow: to rest our head, where dreams happen.
Cup of tea: to warm and relax our bodies.
Amethyst: to remove stress, to boost intelligence and promote personality growth, to protect from harmful outside influences, to strengthen memory.
SPELLWORK:
1. On the night of a New Moon (or a Saturday, or both), climb into bed wearing soft pajamas and tea in hand. Sip your tea and focus your energy on a night of restful sleep. Think back on the past vivid dreams you have had and the details of them. You can also set an amethyst by your bedside, under a pillow, or near a window.
2. When your tea is finished and you are sleepy, read the following incantation, focusing on the mysterious, majestic power of the New Moon. Visualize its shadows as a cloak that will conceal you. The New Moon will inspire the start of your adventure in the dreamscape.
3. Recite the following spell:
I ask the New Moon to allow peaceful and calm rest. To the depths of my subconscious, give me access. Let the absence of the Moon be my shield and guide, and when I wake, let the dreams ever-flow to my mind.
4. Turn off the lights, rest your head on your pillow, and allow for your dreams to blossom! In the morning, you should wake and be able to recall the details of the dream. (We suggest writing them down!)
Thanks to everyone who participated in creating this spell! You all are amazing and we cannot wait to see what else our WAMILY creates together!
