Before moving on to Adventure 02′s primary cast, We’re rounding out the Digimon Adventure cast with a new addition to the cast from Digimon Adventure tri. After that, we’ll be finishing up with some certain fusion evolutions, and then making a short detour into manga territory before moving on!

Today we’ll be covering Meicoomon, the partner of Meiko Mochizuki. Meicoomon has a Baby and Child form, but they’re not named or given any lore details yet, so we’re starting with Meicoomon proper. Here they are, however, for posterity:
As you can see, they’re subspecies of Nyaromon and Plotmon. There’s a reason for that, but... well. Spoilers.
An Adult Digimon characterized by its large ears and tail. Despite being hard to imagine, based on its fluffy coat of fur and adorable appearance, it actually possesses extremely sharp claws underneath its paws. Other than hiding its shy face, the two feelers growing from Meicoomon's neck are also excellent to use as a scarf during cold times.
Its Special Moves are scratching the opponent with its sharp claws (Shut Claw), and spitting out a hairball from its mouth that destroys data (Trichobezoar).
At first blush, one’s instinct is to compare Meicoomon to Tailmon. Which, if you’ve watched tri., is more than likely intentional, as their being opposites is a recurring thing throughout the movie series. They’re both Adult-Level Digimon who appear to be Child Digimon, and both are based on cats.
While Tailmon is more the platonic ideal of a cat, Meicoomon’s inspiration is more specific, being based on the maine coon breed. Its fur pattern and fluffiness are a dead ringer for the maine coon’s, but the “feelers” or scarves as well as its stinger-like tail are more deliberately alien. I like that one of its attacks is a hairball, as well, which is also more deliberately cat evocative than any of Tailmon’s attacks.
Of course, Meicoomon’s standard appearance belies its true form. You see, its “Unknown” Type and Attribute classifications are shared only by a select few Digimon, including the Keramon evolution line, and Apocalymon.
Part way through tri., it’s revealed that Meicoomon actually contains Apocalymon’s data, and with it, she takes her “mutated” form. In this state, she’s larger and more aggressive looking, with bigger claws and the stingers of her feelers and tails becoming larger and more weapon-like. It’s a stark and distinct change while using the same design elements, and it succeeds at what it’s trying to do rather effectively.
This form was foreshadowed a bit, what with the unusual traits of having feelers to begin with, her x-shaped eyes, and the fact that one of her attacks involves destroying data, which is something more associated with Keramon and its like.
Meicoomon isn’t the first time we’ve had a “Tailmon-alike”. Whereas BlackTailmon already existed, Meicoomon and her evolutions are much less “Tailmon’s evolution line, but bad” while still managing to parallel them quite strongly. At the same time, she’s quite successful at being another take on a cat-like Digimon without just being Tailmon all over again.
Considering I covered Ophanimon’s corrupted form last week, I figured it fitting that we go back and do the same for Agumon’s “dark evolved” form. This Digimon introduced the concept to the Digimon fandom, in which a Digimon evolves “incorrectly” in response to the actions of their human partner and runs wild. I’m speaking of course of SkullGreymon:
SkullGreymon didn’t start out this way, of course. His first appearance was in the second virtual pet, where he was one of the “optimal” Perfect-level evolutions of Birdramon, Kabuterimon, and Angemon. Needless to say, this is yet another example of the anime and other media tying things together that weren’t neccessarily tied together after the fact.
SkullGreymon - Undead Digimon | Attribute: Virus
Attacks: Ground Zero/Oblivion Bird, Ground Zero Revision [Ground Zero Kai], Curse Breath, Skull Destroy, Death Nail; (Dub) Dark Shot/Oblivion Bird, Double Dark Shot, Cursed Breath/Buffalo Breath
A Skeleton Digimon whose whole body has become nothing but bones. It was a Digimon that put too much importance on fighting, and as a result of its combat instinct it clung to life despite its body rotting away, becoming Skull Greymon. As Skull Greymon doesn't have even a scrap of intelligence to balance its combat instinct, its existence is a threat to other Digimon. Its Special Move is an organic missile launched from its spinal cord (Ground Zero).

Where MetalGreymon’s virus incarnation had a “decayed flesh” aesthetic going on, SkullGreymon goes further by decaying Greymon’s entire body and making it so the only flesh that remains is the gnarled orhans in his chest and the single, organic-missile like the kinds seen on MetalGreymon mounted on its back. Not only that. its joints are connected by staples or ligaments of some kind, and new, horrifying bones have grown rather than just giving us a skeletal version of Greymon. On top of that, some early artwork depicts it with spooky cobwebs growing inside of it.
SkullGreymon has gone through some minor changes over the years. Given Digimon is focusing more on being a global franchise, attacks like “Ground Zero” are less kosher these days, so it was changed to Oblivion Bird even in Japan.
While SkullGreymon’s very clearly tied to the Greymon family both in name and design, I’ve always wondered about its relation to another Digimon. Namely, Cyclomon, who premiered in the same virtual pet as SkullGreymon did.
Cyclomon’s profile mentions it was “once a proud dragon warrior”, and save for the disproportionate arm, its proportions, hunched over stance, and the location of its horn are dead ringers for SkullGreymon. Was Cyclomon’s original species as a “proud dragon warrior” a Greymon, and SkullGreymon meant as its Perfect form? Unfortunately, the second v-pet doesn’t allow Cyclomon to evolve into SkullGreymon, and no other material has either, so this is purely speculation.
Regardless of design inspirations, SkullGreymon, much like the rest of Agumon’s line, would set the mold for Digimon that would follow after. Not all of them would take the same approach, so SkullGreymon would prove to be a bit unique, even in this particular niche. Its final score is...
After yesterday’s fake-out, we’re skipping the No Level/Hybrid category again to cover Ophanimon. While it’s not Tailmon’s final form in tri., she nonetheless appeared as Adventure Tailmon’s Ultimate form in some media, so she gets covered here in the same way Plesiomon did. But of course...
An Ophan Digimon that is the final form of feminine Angel Digimon. It is one of the Three Archangel Digimon who protect the Digital World's core "Kernel" (God's domain), alongside Seraphimon and Cherubimon. As the Digital World's Holy Mother-like being, it imparts the loving and merciful side of God, while Seraphimon is the executor of the enlightened God's laws, and Cherubimon is the guardian of God and its wisdom; each has their own duty. Its Special Moves are "Eden's Javelin" and "Sefirot Crystal".
Where Holydramon was less of a direct followup to Angewomon, Ophanimon is favored for being a more traditional evolution. Both the fighting game, Digimon Battle Spirit 1.5 (itself an update of an earlier version of the game) and Digimon Adventure for the PSP used her as Tailmon’s Ultimate evolution, but her biggest role was in Digimon Frontier, which focused heavily on the Three Great Angels and their role in the Digital World.
While a more traditional, direct-looking evolution isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Ophanimon feels a bit hamstrung by being a “normal” evolution of Angewomon. Not only that, she overlaps a bit too much with Seraphimon in that she’s a powerful angel covered in blue-ish colored armor and metal wings. The other member of the group, Cherubimon, looks wildly different from the other, so it feels kind of uninspired for Ophanimon to stick so heavily to the same old design tropes.
That being said, she’s got some elements I like. The wheel shaped shoulder pauldrons, the unicorn on her shield and the animals on her helmet are direct reference to the biblical ophanim, which are often described as “wheels with many eyes”, with those eyes sometimes being represented by a lion, ox, eagle, and a unicorn. If they were that set on making her “Girl Seraphimon”, it’s still nice they worked these aspects in.
Ophanimon shares a relationship with the Demon Lord Lilithmon, which is a fallen version of Ophanimon just as Demon was once a Seraphimon. This is reflected in this artwork, which shows Ophanimon without a helmet and has a beauty mark under her eye in the exact same location as some artwork of Lilithmon.
There’s a variation of Ophanimon called “Ophanimon Core”, which is a story-specific version from Digimon Story: Moonlight that she becomes after being infected by something called the “Chrono Core”. While her armor does take an even more Seraphimon-y shade of blue, the addition of red and the fiery wings and lance are things that really enhance the design, and I almost wish they were part of her main one.
Ophanimon isn’t really my favorite Digimon, and part of that has to do with how she doesn’t feel as inspired as something like Holydramon does, while the other part of it is that it pigeonholes Hikari and Tailmon into just being a parallel of Takeru and Patamon. On her own, she fares a bit better, but she’s still not as memorable as the other members of the Great Angels. Ophanimon’s score is...
THREE STARMONS!
Of course, just as Seraphimon has BlackSeraphimon, and Cherubimon has its “Vice” incarnation, Ophanimon has a dark side as well. THIS was the version that appeared in Digimon Adventure tri.
A form of Ophanimon that was so angry that it suppressed its own emotions and fell into madness. It swelled with anger at the world, where atrocious sins keep mounting no matter how many times they are purged, and it closed off its heart. In order to nip evil in the bud, it hunts whichever opponents it has judged to have become a barrier to justice, and tries to establish a world of what it recognizes as justice. Its Special Move is hunting down the opponent with its "Flame Hellscythe", which is shrouded in flames that serve as a weapon, then plunging the hunted soul into hell with hellfire. Also, it has the "Demon's Crystal" summoning technique which keeps tormenting them until they die.
I’m lukewarm on Ophanimon, but I find Ophanimon Falldown Mode far more interesting. Not only does she look less like “bigger Angewomon/Girl Seraphimon”, the full body armor, emotionless metal-covered face, and spikes all over her waist and limbs give a more alien, dispassionate, monstrous impression that gives her a bit of her own identity even as an “evil” version of a pre-existing design.
The greater prominence of the ox and ram’s heads also enhance some of what I liked in normal Ophanimon’s design, and the wheel on her scythe ties into the description of the Ophanim as “wheel”-shaped as well. It’s an interesting way of reinterpreting the same design elements.
Falldown Mode’s profile is also one of the more interesting ones. While BlackSeraphimon, Cherubimon Vice, and even Demon and Lilithmon are pretty vague about why they “went bad”, Ophanimon Falldown Mode gives specific reasons and motivation for it and ultimately characterize her better. It also enhances vanilla Ophanimon a bit more too, making her someone concerned with and responsible for enforcing justice rather than just a beacon of love and wisdom.
Unfortunately, Falldown Mode didn’t get to do much in her brief appearance in tri., which has left me hungry for something more substantial. Here’s hoping it comes in some form in the future.
So, like Gomamon with Vikemon and Plesiomon, Tailmon’s Ultimate-level form has varied, with different sources going back and forth before Digimon Adventure tri. ultimately settled on something. They seemed to be playing with people’s expectations a bit up until almost the very end, but in the end, Toei and Bandai made their choice. So today we’re focusing on the first, best, and final choice for Tailmon’s Ultimate that is canon to Adventure, now and forever.
The ultimate form of god beast Digimon. Its heroic appearance is reminiscent of a ruler of the sky. There are few who have seen its appearance, and it has not even been entirely confirmed where it usually is. However, it is said that it suddenly appeared out of nowhere once when a gigantic evil energy was generated in the Digital World, and laid waste to the evil with its vast power. Its Special Move is striking the opponent with the light energy of all justice (Holy Flame). Those who suffer this technique have their forms instantaneously erased.
Sorry for the bit of trolling there, folks. This argument has gone on so long, I wanted to have a bit of fun with it.
While a lot of people wanted tri. to go with Ophanimon (and they sorta did, but catch back tomorrow), I’m ultimately happier they went with Holydramon (known as Magnadramon in the US) here. Holydramon debuted in Digital Monster Ver. S, where it was actually a Perfect, went on to appear in the Pendulums, was Tailmon’s Ultimate in the third Digimon movie (or the first for you dub fans) and then after Ophanimon’s introduction, they started jumping around a bit before finally settling on Holydramon in tri.’s final act. A lot of people wanted Ophanimon because of the “Patamon and Tailmon’s forms have to go together” thing, but ultimately, I prefer Holydramon because lets Tailmon and Hikari stand as their own characters better.
Plus, honestly, it’s fitting that Tailmon end up changing into something completely different one last time. Plus, being the “ultimate form of Holy Beast Digimon” sort of brings what was mentioned in Plotmon’s profile full circle.
Holydramon’s design has gone through some evolution over the years, with it being made more proportionate, elegant, and less outright vicious-looking than it started as. I know a lot of people prefer their Digital Monsters as more monstrous-looking, but Holydramon just looks rather ungangly and weird in this original rendition.
And it’s not like they can’t make her look more ferocious when they want to, either. Going from peaceful and beautiful-looking to wrathful and ferocious fits Tailmon’s character pretty well, I think, especially in the context of the anime. Plus, yanno, one of her attacks is called friggin “APOCALYPSE”.
If Holydramon looks familiar to you, then you’re probably aware of The Neverending Story’s Falcor, the Luck Dragon, which Holydramon seems to draw heavily from in that they’re both fuzzy, dog-like dragons.
In terms of her role in the franchise beyond being Tailmon’s Ultimate, Holydramon is one of the Four Great Dragon Digimon, which are based off the Four Dragon Kings of Chinese mythology, and seems to represent the White Dragon, who represents the west and the essence of Autumn. In terms of overall lore, the Four Great Dragons haven’t really done much of anything in Digimon media, save for Holydramon herself kickstarting a portion of the plot of Digimon All-Star Rumble, where her status as a member of this group is directly mentioned.
And while we’re on those guys, it’s worth pointing out that not even Holydramon can escape the whole “every single form of Tailmon’s has a parallel that Patamon can evolve into”. Goddramon here can evolve from HolyAngemon, but this is less prominent due to the fact that Goddramon hasn’t really appeared in the anime in this capacity at all.
I really like Holydramon. Not only is she unique among dragon Digimon (we don’t have a lot of furry ones), she’s a fitting endpoint for the Tailmon line, being both unique, and representative of its lovable tendency to consist of totally different things while still managing to fit together pretty well. Yep, we have another top-scorer here, folks. I admit, I’m a bit biased here, but you really gotta go with your feelings with these things, sometimes.
Perfect and Armor Digimon: Angewomon and Nefertimon
Today we’re covering Tailmon’s Perfect and Armor-Level stages, Angewomon and Nefertimon.
Like Tailmon, Angewomon originated in Digital Monster Ver. S for the Sega Saturn, and with her (and LadyDevimon who was also in that game) began the trend of Digimon who were gender-swapped versions of male Digimon. She’s also a shift from a cat to a humanoid design, which continues the trend of Tailmon’s line jumping all over the place. Nefertimon, meanwhile, is of course Tailmon’s Armor Evolution, which she uses to battle in Digimon Adventure 02 when losing her Holy Ring causes her to lose a lot of her battle strength.
Man, it’d be funny if this really were how Tailmon were shown evolving into Angewomon in the anime, wouldn’t it?
An Archangel Digimon with the appearance of a beautiful woman. Although it was previously classified as an Angel-type, it was confirmed as an Archangel-type because of the greatness of its abilities. As their trait, Adult angels have six wings, and Perfect angels have eight wings. Although its personality is extremely gentle, it cannot forgive those who are crooked or evil, and it won't stay its hand from attacking until the opponent converts. Because of its soul and power, it is said to be a being like a goddess of the Digital World. The powerful lightning-strike of its Special Move "Holy Arrow" is also known as "Heaven's Punishment", and its deadly ray of light "Heaven's Charm", which is packed with beauty and affection, demonstrates its strongest efficacy against the evil powers of Digimon.
Despite being more or less a distaff counterpart to Angemon, Angewomon is classified as an “Arcangel Digimon”, which puts her more or less on the same level as HolyAngemon. Most media tend to put her parallel to Angemon, however.
Design wise, she very much fits the mode of “Angemon, but a girl”, but lacks a lot of Angemon’s more distinct features like the bolts in his skin(?) and the larger, disproportionate hands. She falls into the trap of a lot of female characters in media where the female characters have to be less monstrous and more cute or pretty, while also having outfits that emphasize their attractiveness or femininity, which is somewhat unfortunate. That being said, Angewomon isn’t quite as bad about it as some later female Digimon, and has some neat traits like her bow being formed out of the wings on her arm instead of being a physical weapon she holds, as well as the black, empty void revealed when the zipper on her left leg is left open.
Her role in Adventure’s story honestly helps keep Angewomon from being hamstrung too much by being in Angemon’s shadow. That being said, it led to the conceit that absolutely every single one of Takeru and Hikari’s partner’s forms had to parallel one another, which affected some of their Armor Evolutions, as well as people’s preference for Tailmon’s Ultimate form.
But that’s no reason to hold it against Angewomon. Angewomon gets...

Nefertimon - Holy Beast Digimon | Attribute: Vaccine
Attacks: Curse of Queen, Rosetta Stone, Nile Jewelry, Sanctuary Bind (with Pegasmon), Paw of Queen, Hot Foot; (Dub) Cat’s Eye Beam/Beam of Isis/Queen’s Curse, Rosetta Stone/Rocking Stone, Rosetta Stone/Queen’s Paw, Queen’s Paw
An Armor-level Holy Beast Digimon that evolved through the power of the "Digimental of Light". The "Digimental of Light" has the attribute of "Light", and those that don this Digimental will have the ability to purify darkness with the intense power of light. Even though Tailmon is not a descendant of an ancient species, it became able to Armor evolve by awakening the special abilities that slept within its composition data. Its Special Moves are producing a red, high-temperature beam from the ornament on its brow (Curse of Queen), and summoning a megalith with ancient inscriptions engraved in Digiletters to attack the enemy (Rosetta Stone).
For Tailmon’s Armor Evolution they went with an Egyptian sphinx named after an Eygptian Queen rather than some sort of ancient creature, most probably due to the fact that a sphinx is a natural fit for a cat. The Digimental of Light’s theme would be more or less mythological or guardian-beast style creatures, and Digimon would later get another take on a sphinx-based Digimon in the form of AncientSphinxmon.
Nefertimon’s design would follow a lot of the same rules as Pegasmon and most of the other anime Armor Evolutions, which was the Digimental’s design more or less applied to the base Digimon that it evolved form, which ironically makes Nefertimon look more like a direct evolution of Tailmon than Angewomon does.
Conceptually, it follows the “Tailmon and Patamon’s evolutions have to go together” thing that I talked about before, with both Nefertimon and Pegasmon both being four-legged, winged Digimon whose designs parallel one another. Thankfully, Nefertimon’s attacks and abilities are all pretty different from Pegasmon’s so it’s not too overt, but it stands out nonetheless.
Either way, Nefertimon is a solid design, and I can see why they chose to go in the direction they did. She just seems just a tiny bit hamstrung by needing to “go with” Pegasmon. Nefertimon’s score is...
Today we come to Tailmon herself, which is generally regarded as the “real” base form of this line, as it’s the one that gets the most focus and is treated as the “face” of this evolution line. This Digimon is, of course, known as “Gatomon” in the dub.
Tailmon punches things.
Tailmon and her two upcoming Perfect and Ultimate stages actually have their origins well before the likes of the Pendulum series and the anime, as they premiered in the obscure game, Digital Monster Ver. S, for the Sega Saturn. From there, Tailmon made it into both the “Nature Spirits” and “Virus Busters” Pendulums, became the new addition to the team introduced mid-way through Adventure (while also originating the recurring “reformed villain” archetype), and has since gone on to be a popular recurring Digimon in various anime, manga, and video games, with her even becoming a semi-important supporting character in the Digimon Xros Wars manga. Her current starring role is the Adult form of the partner of Shinjō Michi in the mobile game, Digimon ReArise.
Without further ado, let’s continue on to the review.
It has a very healthy curiosity, so it loves pranks. Although its body is small, it is a precious Holy-species Digimon, and its appearance does not match the true strength it possesses. It wears a Holy Ring on its tail, proof that it is a Holy-species, but if this Holy Ring is lost, its power is decreased and it can no longer exhibit its original power. In order to defend itself, it wears long claws copied from SaberLeomon's data. Its Special Moves are using its long claws and attacking the opponent (Neko Punch), and manipulating the enemy with a piercing glare (Cat's Eye). Those who suffer this glare will attack themselves.
From a cat-shaped head to a dog to a cat again. We’ve got two more species changes before this is over.
Tailmon is unique in that it’s an Adult-Level Digimon that resembles a Child-Level one, and indeed, it’s even treated as a Child-Level Digimon as far as Armor Evolution goes and once it lacks its Holy Ring. That same Holy Ring, along with its tail, is Tailmon’s most prominent feature and what it’s really named for, and due to the way its profile and the anime put particular focus on it, the “Holy Ring” is more Tailmon’s trademark despite a lot of Digimon also having one.
Here you can see Tailmon without her Holy Ring, which is generally treated as a Child-Level Digimon in some media.
Tailmon fits the bill of the “pint sized powerhouse”, and her anime debut has her beating the other Adult-Level members of Adventure’s cast, though that was also due to exploiting positioning a fair bit. She doesn’t fair as well in the rest of Adventure, with Angewomon becoming her default battle form and Adult-level opponents mostly being obsolete by that point in the story, and by the time 02 comes along she’s gotten a story-driven power down, so this was overall pretty brief.
How Tailmon tends to get portrayed also varies by the media. The one in Adventure is known for being mature and relatively more serious than the rest of the show’s main cast, while Bandai likes to play up the “cute and innocent cat” bit in art work. Conceptually, her abilities are a mix of physical attacks and “Holy”-style attacks, though Adventure primarily used the former. The reference to SaberLeomon with her gloved claws being copied from its data is fairly clever, though the two Digimon don’t tend to get paired together much evolution-wise, outside of cards and video games.
Tailmon gets not one but two counterparts, one of which is a direct recolor and one of which we’ll be covering next week (as well as a THIRD recolor who diverges a bit conceptually), so she’s influenced her share of Digimon despite not having a ton of Digimon who are direct callbacks to her design archetype. That’s really more her Perfect stage’s thing. That being said, as far as the anime goes, her role was recurring throughout the franchise, with all sorts of different varieties of Digimon filling it.
Tailmon is both a memorable character and design, and really, her introduction marked a significant shift in the plot of Adventure that really made the series come into its own. She’s slightly more unique on her own than the rest of Adventure’s cast, but she’s not without her influence on the franchise either. Tailmon gets...
We continue Tailmon week with Plotmon, the Child form of Tailmon. We started with a snowball, it turned into a cat, and now we’ve got a dog.
Plotmon’s name is an interesting one. It’s more than likely named after the Plott Hound, but the way Japanese pronunciations use the “r” sound for the letter “l”, it also gives it a double meaning in that it can also be pronounced as “Protomon”. The reason for this will become apparent as we dive deeper.
The dub meanwhile, named this Digimon after a producer’s cat. This occurred because there wasn’t an official dub name picked out yet, and they didn’t have anything to go on, so they assumed from the script that “Gatomon’s” rookie form would also be a cat. They turned out to be quiiiiiiite mistaken.
A Holy-species Digimon child characterized by its lop ears. Because it is still very young, it is unable to manifest its holy powers, and isn't even aware of its own mission. For that reason it is naturally insecure, so it can become either good or evil. However, the time will come someday when Plotmon, who was born as a Holy-species Digimon, will awaken to its mission as one of the "Virus Busters". Also, Plotmon is an experimental Digimon that was created by Digimon researchers, and because it was made to imitate the pets that live with humans, it has an appearance close to that of a real animal. With its Special Move "Puppy Howling", a super-high pitched bark, it completely paralyzes the opponent.
From a capricious, curious, and lonely cat to a precious puppy.
You may recall last week that I touched on how Patamon was this non-descript, cute-looking Digimon that turned out to be special and unique in its evolution. While this seemed to be worked into Patamon’s concept after the fact, it’s very much baked into the concept with Plotmon here. Not only does this it have great potential, it’s one of the first experimental or artificial Digimon we’ll see in the lore (and no, the anime doesn’t really touch on this), hence the double meaning of its name.
Design-wise, Plotmon is even more “laser-guided designed to be cute” than Patamon is, and its body is kind of rounded, soft-looking, and featureless. Honestly, when I started this review, I was going to be harder on that, saying Plotmon’s design isn’t very exciting, but... that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? Its profile states that it hasn’t come into its potential yet, and what it will ultimately become is undecided. It’s a “prototype”, so like a lot of the Baby Digimon, Plotmon is purposefully “under-designed” to reflect the idea that it’s yet to become what it’s meant to be.
The theme of Angel/Holy Digimon having a duality with the Dark-type Digimon is also present here, with Plotmon’s potential having the ability for it to turn evil as well. This bears fruit with some of its potential evolutions, which includes an evil version of Tailmon. You can also see that its collar is a Holy Ring, a recurring element, and also something that’s sort of a symbol of Tailmon itself, so it’s fitting that it’s present on her Child stage.

This week, we begin covering the Tailmon line, starting with her Baby stages, YukimiBotamon (known as SnowBotamon sometimes in the dub) and Nyaromon. These two debuted in the anime and the last Pendulum series, “Virus Busters”, which introduced Tailmon’s line to the virtual pets.
This line has a reputation for jumping around between different creatures, and well, as you can see, it gets started doing that pretty early.
A Baby Digimon whose whole body is covered in fluffy, white hair. It is considered a species of Botamon, and was named "YukimiBotamon" after its white body, but the details are not clearly known. It is weak to heat, and tends to prefer cold places, so its body feels cold to the touch. Its attack technique is breathing out freezing cold air (Diamond Dust). When YukimiBotamon exhales, the moisture in the air freezes, and falls while brilliantly glittering.

YukimiBotamon is our third variation on Botamon, after Nyokimon, and this one doesn’t really excite me as much as the latter did. I mean, YukimiBotamon is cute and everything, but its just kind of a round snowball with eyes, isn’t it? I rather enjoy some of the “it’s recolored white so it’s an ice based Digimon now” but YukimiBotamon doesn’t really have much to offer, and on top of that it somehow achieves the task of being the odd ‘mon out in a line whose themes are pretty broad to begin with.
It’s plenty cute though, and it also serves as a decent base form for other Baby Digimon, at the very least. YukimiBotamon gets...
A tiny Digimon which has cat-like characteristics. It is always capricious, and that behavior seems to have been attached to Nyaromon as a result of its being like a "cat". Although it is sometimes frivolous due to its overflowing curiosity, it also has a lonely side. Its Special Move is puffing up its tail, making the hairs like wires and then striking the opponent (Fox Tail). However, there has never yet been an opponent observed to flinch from this attack.

Nyaromon is where we get something a bit more interesting. Tailmon is very much the cat Digimon, but it also has to pull double duty by being a Holy Beast, so a lot of the more typical cat-like characteristics are put here into Nyaromon.
Nyaromon’s more than just a waddling cat head though. It’s got a jagged sort of reptilian-looking mouth, isn’t very fluffy, and its ears are more like horns. It gives the impression it’s more of a cat-shaped creature than an outright cat, which fits considering that it’s just starting to develop these characteristics after starting as something else.
We’d get another take on a cat-like Baby form later on with Wanyamon (though that one is also a combination of other elements), and Nyaromon has a currently unnamed recolor that serves as the baby stage of Meicoomon’s line, but Nyaromon works rather well as the first attempt at making a Digimon out of that concept.
We continue our look at the main cast’s App Fusion partners with Dokamon’s partner, Perorimon. It feels fitting that we’d come to him in the same week as Tokomon, for reasons that will soon appear obvious.
Perorimon’s name has a twofold meaning, in that it comes from “perori”, meaning “licking” or the onomatopoeia for “eating enthusiastically”, and “perori to tairageru”, meaning to ‘scarf down/gormandize”. Basically, he’s a big eater who reviews food.
But is Perorimon a gourmet meal or simply fast food? Let’s find out.

A glutton that loves mealtime more than anything. Although it is usually easygoing, when it gets hungry, its personality turns ferocious in its desperation for food.
To start off with, Perorimon’s “Perorinlog” attack is a reference to “Tabelog”, an on-line restaurant guide in Japan. Just a bit of trivia, there!
So you’re probably wondering what this has to do with Tokomon. Well, let me show you!
Perorimon has a LOT of teeth. Behind that goofy, unassuming smile exists an all consuming maw full of multiple rows of chompers. Perorimon is here to chow down, and he means business.
That being said, Perorimon would be an easy character to get wrong, given that his profile makes him out to be a huge eater who flies into a rage when he doesn’t get to eat, and that he’s big and round on top of all that. Thankfully, the Applimonsters anime instead focused on the fact that he’s basically the Digimon equivalent of “Yelp!”, only with actual standards, and had him help teach Eri how to be a discerning and effective reviewer of food while also subverting the stereotype that he’s a huge eater who will devour anything.
Furthermore, it provided an interesting look at the nature of being an Appmon, as he’s a creature designed to review and critique food, despite being a creature of data who logically would never have been able to eat human food. Prior to being Appliarized into physical form, Perorimon had to absorb knowledge about food and its preparation to do his job, which was a pretty good way of exploring the separation between humans and AI creatures.
The anime also gave us another interesting side of Perorimon in that there’s multiple variations of it, based on reviewing different kinds of food. The “familiar” Perorimon is dressed like a cowboy, so it can be guessed that his specialty is reviewing Western-style cuisine. Another variation was “Maripero”, a female Perorimon who showed us what happened when an Appmon’s application is being discontinued or shut down, in that they cease to exist.

We’re back in action with Hybrid Digimon, and today we’re covering the Human Spirit of Ice, Chackmon.
Instead of being based directly on an Adventure archetype, we get something a bit different, with an icy teddy bear in the form of Chackmon. They could have done an anthropomorphic seal ala Gomamon, but instead, we got something a bit more creative and capable of standing on its own.
A Digimon that possesses power over Ice which bears the might of one of the legendary Ten Warriors. It styles itself as holding rank as a member of a polar army's polar region defense force. Since it replies that the matter's top secret if you ask anything about it, the truth is unknown. It's thought to be largely something it dreamed up. However, its operation of the Launcher it carries (nicknamed Romeo) and its precision conduct in battle are genuine, and its survivalist knowledge also has a strong, truly reliable existence. Since it rarely acts of its own volition, it primarily operates in response to someone's requests or orders. It will have nothing to do if nobody is relying on it, and is likely to worry about its purpose in life and get completely depressed. The shots fired from its Launcher are special snowballs, so there are several varieties according to purpose. Its Special Moves are taking the shape of an icicle and pouncing at the opponent (Tsurararara~), and blindly firing supercooled snowballs from the Launcher (Snow Bomber).

Fun fact: “V-Jump Attack” gets its name from the Shounen Jump spinoff that covers gaming and toy related news and comics that Digimon is regularly interested in. The more you know!
Chackmon is an interesting design choice. A direct call back to Gomamon would have probably been safer, but instead we get what is arguably a commando version of Yukidarumon. The Spirits of Ice wouldn’t completely avoid callbacks to the Gomamon family (wait for our review of Blizzarmon), but as the first and more familiar stage, Chackmon is a breath of fresh air in a line up that’s otherwise very focused on homaging the Adventure cast.
On its own, the juxtaposition of a cute and adorable snow bear with military look is an interesting one, and fits in well with Tomoki from Frontier’s overall character arc of being a kid who’s helpless without his brother figures having to basically stand up for himself. Unfortunately, poor Tomoki got hit hard with some of Frontier’s problems regarding character focus, and he didn’t get enough victories of his own, but nevertheless, his battle with Asuramon was a fitting exploration of the themes I’m talking about here.
Another thing I like is that Chackmon plays with the “made of snow” thing. While the likes of Yukidarumon are just bear shaped and have cold-based attacks, Chackmon here is reshaping himself and turning into spikes of icicles and stuff. It’s neat!

FOUR STARMONS! I wish his track record in the anime was a bit better, but you can’t deny his concept is not only clever, it’s very fitting, and... well, it just works.
Today we conclude our look at the Patamon line with the final stage, Seraphimon. Are you tired of angel Digimon yet? Because I guarantee you the fandom isn’t.
The Digiletters on his breech-cloth, for the record, translate to a quote said by Final Fantasy 7′s Sephiroth: “Subete wa ware to tomoni“, or “all shall become one with me.” A meaningless reference? Or foreshadowing of Seraphimon’s tendency to fall to the dark side? You, the people, shall decide.

Seraphimon - Seraph Digimon | Attribute: Vaccine

A Seraph Digimon that is dressed in holy armor that shines silver, and possesses ten golden wings. As the highest-ranked being among Angel Digimon, it rules over them all. Although its true face and personality is hidden behind a mask and cannot be glimpsed, it is the being closest to the "Being of Good" called "God". It is told that when it descends for the final battle against evil beings, it will purify everything. Also, it is said that Demon, who fell to the Dark Area and became a Demon Lord Digimon, was originally a Seraphimon. Its Special Moves are firing seven super-heated spheres of light at the opponent (Seven Heavens), and using the deepest mystery to convert its mortal life into a Big Bang (Testament).

Seraphimon is, of course, based on the Seraphs, the highest ranking of all the angels. Of course, the seraphs described in the bible look a bit different from Seraphimon does. However, they do at the very least share the trait of having covered their faces and bearing six wings.
Seraphimon continues the trend of “Angemon, but more”, but I like him a bit more than HolyAngemon. The full armored body and the return of lore stuff like it being at risk of becoming a fallen angel like Angemon is with Devimon are welcome touches, and his attacks are different enough from Angemon and HolyAngemon’s to avoid HerakleKabuterimon’s “The same Digimon, but bigger” problem. The only returning attack is HolyAngemon’s “Excalibur” attack, but I’m largely fine with that.
Of course, Seraphimon is more than just Takeru’s partner. He’s a rather important Digimon in the grand scheme of things, given that he’s a member and leader of the “Three Great Angels”, a group of three Angel Digimon that serve as the holiest of the holy and enact the will of the Digital World’s “God”, whomever that enigmatic being may be. So while he’s appeared in Adventure media as Patamon’s final form, he’s mostly only appeared briefly in that capacity and without as much fanfare, with his most significant fictional appearance actually being in Digimon Frontier, where he serves as the primary end goal for the first cour and factors significantly into the backstory.
That being said there’s something noteworthy about Seraphimon. I’ve talked briefly about the power wankery surrounding HolyAngemon and Angemon and the attitude that they’re “the strongest ever”. But Seraphimon? Seraphimon...
Seraphimon gets beat up. Seraphimon gets beat up a lot.
That last one is actually Tokomon, but he was Seraphimon several moments before.
Pretty much every debut appearance by Seraphimon in any form of media, save for Digimon Adventure tri., inevitably ends with him getting his ass handed to him. And even then, his first appearance was an afterthought happening after the evolution of Hououmon, which was treated as a bigger deal. This happens so often, it’s definitely got to be a “Leomon dies”-esque running gag. Heck, his loss in V-Tamer 01 wrecked him so bad, he evolved into a completely different Digimon for the rest of the series.
I hope this doesn’t sound like I’m overly bitter or like I don’t like Seraphimon, because ultimately, he’s actually my favorite of Patamon’s evolution line. But dang, this happens enough to be noteworthy, and it’s hilarious in the context of how the fandom sometimes talks about the Angemon family, so I just thought I’d give it a bit of focus.
Seraphimon achieves the goal of being a natural endpoint for Angemon’s line without just being “more of the same”. Furthermore, he occupies a pretty important spot in Digimon cosmogony. I’m pretty happy to give him...
Today continues our look at Patamon’s line, and today we’re covering HolyAngemon, known in the US as MagnaAngemon. What makes him holy and Angemon not? Seems kind of redundant! Is there a DemonicDevimon?
An Archangel Digimon with eight shining, silver wings. Holy Angemon's mission in the Digital World is to act as a law enforcement officer, and it has the duty of supervising and surveying the masses of Angel Digimon. Furthermore, while it usually takes the form of a priest and acts as the spokesperson for the essence of "Light", which tries to preserve the order of the Digital World, when the Digital World is shrouded by the essence of "Darkness", it changes into its Battle Modeto fight off evil. In its Battle Mode, it consigns the opponent to oblivion with the Beam Shield on its left arm and the holy sword Excalibur it wields with its right arm. Additionally, although Holy Angemon has a personality replete with gentleness and kindness when it is in Priest Mode, it takes on an austere personality when it is in Battle Mode. Its Special Move is manifesting a door leading to subspace from which there is no return, and consigning the opponent to oblivion through it (Heaven's Gate).
So hey, HolyAngemon had two forms before Imperialdramon came along and made it cool. If you only watched the anime, you would have never seen Priest Mode, but it’s the form HolyAngemon spends most of his time in V-Tamer 01. And honestly, thank god for it, because it’s what keeps HolyAngemon from feeling like “Angemon, but more”.
It’s not as bad as HerakleKabuterimon, of course. He has different attacks and abilities, not just powered up versions of his previous forms. I’m always a sucker for a beam sword and Arthurian references. But I don’t know, I find this guy hard to get excited for. He appeared pretty late in the anime, and the whole “Angemon and his evolutions are the strongest and best characters” combined with all that to make me just kind of weary of him. He doesn’t do much in the franchise outside of the tail end of Adventure and V-Tamer for me to get excited about him.
That said, there are parts of HolyAngemon I do like. I like how his helmet is now evocative of a bishop’s mitre, and Priest Mode has a minimalist enough design going on that I think manages to look distinct while still being very simple. The peace symbol on his belt is particularly amusing.

Today’s review is a twofold one. We’ll becoming Patamon’s Adult evolution in Adventure, as well as his Armor Evolution from Adventure 02, Pegasmon.
For those uninitiated, Armor Evolution is a concept introduced in the second anime series, where Digimon who carried the data of ancient species could evolve using items called Digimentals. There were a myriad of Armor forms, but 02 focused on only a handful, with others appearing later on. We’ll be covering the anime ones first when we get to 02, but I don’t know if they’ll all be grouped up like this or temporarily assume the Hybrid/No Level slot.

Angemon - Angel Digimon | Attribute: Vaccine

An Angel Digimon with six shining wings, whose body is clad in cloth so pure white as to be divine. It is a being of perfected virtue, and although it is called a Digimon that brings happiness, when confronting evil it does not stop attacking, with extreme composure, until the opponent is completely annihilated. On the countless times when the Digital World is visited by a crisis, it is told that it descends to lead Digimon of the same genus, and Devimon, which was won over to the Dark Side, was originally of the same species. Its Special Move is striking the opponent with its fist shining gold (Heaven's Knuckle).

I’m gonna begin this review with a small disclaimer. Angemon and his evolutions kind of get under my skin. There was a fair amount of discourse back in the day and silly “power level” wankery about these Digimon, and the whole attitude that they were the best ever and either given all the good moments or not treated well enough... well, it got very silly. I’m not going to let that color my review too much, I just wanted to get that out of the way.
Angemon is another one of those Digimon that sets the mold. There are a lot of angelic Digimon, and it all started here. The usual design elements, the being a multi-winged winged humanoid, the helmet-covering-the-eyes bit, it all started with Angemon, and only a few Angel Digimon really stray from these basic design elements.
That being said, Angemon has a few traits that are unique to him that don’t really carry over to his evolutions, like the bolts in his... skin? bodysuit? Either way, they look fused in, which combined with his armored/wrapped gloved hand (which the artwork above makes it look like is capable of unwinding apart?) make Angemon look a bit more monstrous than his successors. This is balanced by the shawl wrapped around him, along with the golden armored portion and helmet, which suit the image of a devout, faithful warrior.
Angemon was used in the climax of Adventure’s first cour, where he was revealed to be Devimon’s opposite number and the one prophecised to defeat him. This duality between angel and demonic Digimon was natural and would carry over to multiple species. The idea that Angel Digimon and Devil Digimon were two sides of the same coin would be revisited a number of times afterward, with some Digimon even using the combination of their duality as a key point.
The rest of Adventure would hold Angemon in reserve for special occasions, though by 02 he was treated as a more general evolution due to them not fighting the kind of Digimon his powers gave him extra damage to. Angemon being “special” would carry over into other series as well, with him being a semi-notable secondary character in an episode of Frontier, and factoring into Baalmon’s backstory in Xros Wars.
Angemon is an important Digimon, in that no other Digimon has had as much influence on the shaping of the franchise’s lore and influencing the design of other Digimon as he has, save for Greymon and Garurumon. He stands as the most iconic and notable of them all, with a prominence that exceeds even his evolutions. I can’t help but give Angemon...

Pegasmon - Holy Beast/Mammal Digimon | Attribute: Vaccine
Attacks: Shooting Star, Silver Blaze, Needle Rain, Sanctuary Bind [with Nefertimon], Rodeo Gallop, Pegas Drop ; (Dub) Star Shower/Shooting Star, Equus Beam/Silver Blaze, Mane Wind/Needle Rain, Golden Noose, Rodeo Kick/Rodeo Gallop, Pegas Drop
An Armor-level Holy Beast Digimon that evolved through the power of the "Digimental of Hope". The "Digimental of Hope" has the attribute of "Holy", and those that don this Digimental are able to obtain sacred power. Those that acquire this power are able to exhibit their absolute strength toward evildoers. Its Signature Move is unleashing a powerful blow with its hind legs (Rodeo Gallop). Its Special Moves are firing a holy beam from its brow (Silver Blaze), and creating the void of space inside both of its wings, and sending out shooting stars (Shooting Star).

Pegasmon, or Pegasusmon as he’s known in the dub, is Patamon’s Armor form with the Digimental of Hope. It was the one used in the anime, which is fitting enough, because that was Takeru’s crest. The theme of the Digimental of Hope seems to be hooved creatures that are also derived from constellations, and fittingly enough, Pegasmon has a number of star-themed attacks.
As an Armor Evolution, Pegasmon shows all the hallmarks of these evolutions pretty well. His appearance has armor derived from the Digimental of Hope covering a body that resembles Patamon stretched out into the form of a horse, so in a way, he’s literally Patamon wearing armor. It’s a pleasant, streamlined design, and while not the most unusual-looking Digimon, it succeeds at achieving exactly what it wants to be and looks good while doing it.
Pegasmon is also designed to go with Nefertimon, as a lot of Patamon and Tailmon’s evolutions are designed to parallel one another. This would carry over to a lot of other Armor forms, but it’s most notable with Pegasmon and Nefertimon because they shared a debut in the anime and even had a joint attack they performed together.
Pegasmon is a fitting introduction for Armor Digimon for this review blog, because he has all the hallmarks necessary to easily explain the concept. I can’t help but wonder if the connection between Patamon and Unimon I theorized about yesterday influenced the choice to make Pegasmon a winged horse, but I have no way of knowing if this is the case or if my idea even applies to what happened or not. But it’s nicely reminiscent of Unimon at any rate.
We continue our look at Patamon’s line, with, well. Patamon. Everyone’s favorite batpig debuted in the third version of the original virtual pet, but while he still evolved from Poyomon and Tokomon, the evolution most associated with him appeared in a much earlier virtual pet in a manner similar to Piyomon and Birdramon’s relationship.
Aside from being a main character in Adventure, Patamon has been a recurring mainstay throughout the franchise, and is also a major supporting character in Digimon Frontier as well as having semi-prominent guest appearances in other media.
Anyway, let’s get down to it, before poor little Patamon tires himself out.

Also, even though Patamon doesn't wear a Holy Ring, it is able to exhibit its hidden holy power, and it appears to have inherited the genes of ancient Digimon. Its Special Moves are sucking in air then spewing an air shot out in one burst (Air Shot), and striking the opponent with its large ears (Hane Binta).

You’ll notice I included two profiles here. I’ll get into why in a minute.
Patamon’s design is pretty simple. He has a beanbag-shaped body and a pair of wings, complete with tiny, nubby toes. If he were smaller and you didn’t know any better, you might mistake the little guy for a Baby Level Digimon. He’s very clearly designed to be cute in a more general sense, in the way that might appeal equally to boys and girls if you thought about it in a marketing sense. Patamon looks like he was designed to be a turned into a huggable plush toy from day one.
The lore also gives him poor flight abilities, despite his wings being his main feature. Piyomon’s profile made it Patamon’s rival in the bad flier department, but aside from a single early episode, Adventure didn’t really capitalize on this much, with both Piyomon and Patamon being rather good at it for the majority of the series.
Now, why the two profiles? Well, to start off, the first one is Patamon’s current Reference Book profile, which was utilized for the D-3, the Digivice toy for Digimon Adventure 02. The second one is from Patamon’s original profile for the third virtual pet, and as you can see, there are some things missing. The Reference Book/D-3 profile expands the original, incorporating stuff that began with Patamon’s anime appearance, such as the dormant holy powers, and stuff that was newly relevant, like it being an ancient species descendant, which would be the reason for why it could Armor Evolve.
I’ve talked a lot in these reviews about “what could have been”. But Patamon’s original profile especially gets my mind going. I stated earlier that in his original virtual pet, Patamon couldn’t evolve into Angemon; that guy first showed up in the same virtual pet as Gabumon. Patamon wouldn’t get the ability to evolve into Angemon until Digimon World.
I’ve never seen Piyomon’s original v-pet profile, so I don’t know if that stuff about wanting to evolve into Birdramon and not wanting to evolve into Cockatrimon was there in the original draft. But nothing like Patamon alluding that it’d be evolving into Angemon is in that original profile, which leads me to suspect that wasn’t always the original intention. Rather, I see a strong connection between Patamon and another Digimon that first appeared in the same virtual pet as it did.
Unimon is the easier Digimon to raise of all the Digimon in the third v-pet, much like Greymon is for Agumon, while neighboring Centalmon has more Tyrannomon-esque difficult raising requirements. What’s more, it carries on Patamon’s association with flight, is a mammalian creature same as Patamon is, and its “Holy Shot” attack is pretty similar conceptually to Patamon’s “Air Shot”.
This is all speculation, but if Patamon was designed with Unimon being his more optimal evolution, why did they go with Angemon instead? HolyAngemon didn’t exist yet, so there wasn’t really a dearth of material that made him the better option. If I had to guess, I’d imagine that Angemon both won out in cool factor, and because the “small, weak-looking creature evolving into something special like an angel” seemed like a more compelling story-line.
But again, this is just speculation, and I have a lot of material to cover in Angemon’s review tomorrow (with someone else), so I wanted to cover it here instead. Let’s get on to Patamon’s score...
FOUR STARMONS! Patamon is one of the Adventure characters to win out in cuteness, but I don’t think he’s quite worthy of hitting the Five Starmon slot.
