The interesting thing about the Kawajiris, to me, is that they are not, on the surface, very remarkable. By all appearances they’re a normal, distant, unhealthy family. There’s no real culprit behind their problems, there are just three mismatched people, each responsible for some part of it, but not in a way that you could really blame them for. Kosaku isn’t purposely cruel, he’s just (from what we learn of him) fundamentally incapable of being a normal husband and father. Shinobu is trapped and frustrated. Hayato is a child.

So I wrote a good old-fashioned Fandom Meta Essay about it. I basically tried to do just a rundown of the facts we know about each of them, followed by some extrapolation and my thoughts about their development.

In my opinion, easily the biggest example of wasted potential in Vento Aureo is everything about Donatella. She was barely mentioned by anyone and barely brought up save for Diavolo and Doppio’s backstory sequence, even though she feels like what should be an important character to both Diavolo and Trish. I don’t think she even has a single line in the manga.

She raised Trish her whole life, didn’t she? Imagine if Trish grew up with ideas about her father based on stories that Donatella told her, and she recounted or thought about those experiences sometime, either to herself or to the other characters (like if she went “my mother told me about my father, she said he was like this…”) and then we see her shock when she finds out that her father is the boss of a mafia, and then when she finds out that he doesn’t care about her in the slightest and just wants to kill her. That could’ve been so interesting and given both Trish and Donatella more depth and fleshing out as important characters.

Not to mention that Diavolo, present-day VA, is shown as a paranoid recluse who avoids everyone- for all we know, Donatella is the only person he’s ever been genuinely close with. I don’t think it’s a problem that we don’t see how Diavolo feels about her because he’s supposed to be a mysterious character, but it’s so disappointing that Donatella just feels so wasted when she plays such an interesting role in the background. She really feels less like a character that Araki tried to think about and flesh out and more just an object- a plot reason why Diavolo has a daughter. It would’ve been the exact same if Diavolo just donated sperm when he was a teenager or something. It is just a big letdown.

One of main ‘beef’ is that it’s never explained or shown in the manga what made Donatella like/love Diavolo in the first place. Nor explained why she took 15 years to actually look for him* and only when she’s about to die (unless the person she hired for the job took THAT long to find him).

The anime adds a short scene and dialogue of Diavolo and her meeting when they were young (and implying that it was love at first sight), but that was it.

*in fact, Donatella should know about Diavolo’s village fire as it supposedly happened not long after their summer romance and his father finding about his crime. Unless Italian television doesn’t broadcast Sardinian happenings, even if it’s one of the 20 regions of Italy.
