Ways to help refugees
That Syrian child whose picture is being shared had a name, his name was Aylan Kurdi and he was 3 years old. He had a brother name Galip who was 5 years old who died as well, along with their mother. He had a family and would have had a bright future had the International community done anything to stop the attrocities, had the International community done anything to make seeking reguge easier and more humane. When you share his picture as some nameless person in order to spark outrage, in order to pat yourself on the back for doing *something* or for likes and shares you engage in the dehumanization of a 3 year old child. He had a name, Aylan.
And instead of sharing such a triggering, dehumanizing, and disgusting image to make yourself feel good you could donate money to the many organizations that are attempting to help refugees find shelter, that are attempting to feed them, you could start petitions, you could share the history of the war (words not just pictures), you could write letters to legislators that represent you to help put the pressure on them to act regarding the refugee crisis. When enough people actually DO something…things get done. But when you share a disturbing picture which further fuels our desensitization to violence you’re not doing anything other than appeasing your own ego.
So here are some ways to *actually* help:
1. Doctors Without Borders is providing medical aid in and around Syria. If you call this number you can ensure your funds go directly to Syrian refugees 1-888-392-0392.
2. World Visions works in Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan to provide clean and sanitizing water. You can donate by calling 1-800-562-4453.
3. CARE operates multiple refugee centers in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon and you can donate to them by calling 1-800-521-CARE
4. World Food Program will provide food to Syrians and other refugees…you can donate at wfp.org
5. Islamic Relief USA is also providing food, water, and shelter and you can donate to them by visiting http://www.irusa.org/emergencies/syrian-humanitarian-relief/
6. You can also donate to SavetheChildren.org which provides things such as diapers, clothing, and food.
7. You can donate to the U.N refugee agency here: http://donate.unhcr.org/gbr/general/
8. You can purchase items on an Amazon wishlist specifically for the refugees stranded in Calais. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/ls?lid=1P2RJO27Q6N2T&tag=independen058-21&ty=wishlist
9. You can sign the following petition to have more asylum seekers accepted in the U.K https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/105991
10. You can donate here to help the refugees stuck in the Balkans get shelter https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-us-give-them-shelter-on-their-way-to-refuge–2#/
But you can also do more, get involved in grassroots organizations locally, fundraise with your church/mosque/temple. Write and start new petitions. Protest in front of embassies or other places of governance.
Really, there are many ways to help and sharing a picture of a young child…a BABY without his name, his story, anything is not one of them.

YOUNG UNARMED BLACK MAN SHOT AND PARALYZED IN HIS NEIGHBORHOOD BY FAKE COP FOR TALKING TO WHITE GIRL IN HIS CAR
On February 4, sitting in his own car in his own neighborhood, talking to a female passenger, Monroe Bird was shot in the neck by a security guard, Ricky Stone, a 52-year-old white man. The bullet pierced the C3 vertebrae in his neck. Standing 6 feet, 8 inches, Bird, a gifted athlete, is now unable to move his arms or legs and relies on a ventilator to breathe.
Heres what you need to know:
The security guard who shot Bird possessed marijuana at the time of the shooting. He told the Tulsa police that he hadn’t smoked it in a few weeks, and they didn’t even give him a citation. This is the definition of white privilege. Mind you, Tulsa was quick to test Eric Harris for drugs after they killed him and then released the results widely—even though he never acted violently toward officers.
The security guard went to the tired, age-old excuse and claimed that he saw Bird reach into his glove compartment. According to the police report, no weapons were found in or near the car, and no items that even seemed to belong in the glove compartment were found out or about in the car.
The security guard claimed he thought Monroe and his female passenger were having sex in the car and that he only approached them because of this. She’s white. Bird is black. Both denied doing anything of the sort.
The security guard has claimed that Bird, who has no criminal record, attempted to run him over and basically kill him there on the spot. Both the female passenger and Bird denied the guard’s account and stated that they were driving away when Stone began recklessly firing his gun into the car.
The security guard who shot Bird worked for Benjy D. Smith, who owns Smith & Son Security Company. This important to know because Smith is a reserve deputy for the same Tulsa Sheriff’s Office that is currently under national scrutiny for its unethical practices with Reserve Deputy Bob Bates, who shot and killed Eric Harris earlier this year.
The insurance company is denying him coverage because they claim “it was his own fault that he got shot.”
PLEASE HELP HIM!!
you can either Donate (doesnt have to be alot it can be as small as $5) or Call the healthcare group and demand they give coverage with the number listed above.

april 25 is world penguin day, so chosen as scientists working at the mcmurdo research station (see: antarctica: a year on ice and encounters at the end of the world) noticed that every year on this day a colony of adelie penguins would return after months at sea.
two recently published studies have shown that climate change is killing off chicks from the world’s biggest colony of magellanic penguins in argentina, while on ross Island in antarctica, adelie penguins are struggling to feed themselves as melting sea ice breaks away into giant icebergs.
like adelies, emperor penguins rely on sea ice for food and breading grounds, and a 2008 wwf study estimated that 50 percent of emperors and 75 percent of adelies will likely decline or disappear if global average temperatures rise above pre industrial levels by just 2 degrees celcius.
there’s also strong evidence to suggest a more than 50 percent drop in the abundance of chinstrap breeding in antarctica since 1986. photos by paul nicklen, paul goldstein, carl safina, stefano unterthiner, michael lohmann and maria stenzel

Life-saving UNICEF supplies reach Nepal to help 1.7 million children severely affected by earthquake
KATHMANDU / NEW YORK, 30 April 2015 – Over the past 48 hours, UNICEF has delivered 29 metric tonnes of humanitarian supplies to Nepal including tents and tarpaulins, water purification tablets, first aid and hygiene kits, as part of ongoing efforts to reach at least 1.7 million children living in areas hardest hit by the earthquake. Over the coming days, UNICEF is planning additional aid items to arrive in Kathmandu.
“Children’s lives in Nepal have been turned upside down,” said Raju Shreshta, Chief Logistics for UNICEF Supply Division in Copenhagen. “Thousands are dead, houses are destroyed - my family and friends in Nepal are caught up in the disaster, too. There is a lack of medical supplies and beds in the hospitals. As a priority, UNICEF has shipped tents to Nepal that can serve as medical clinics and that can also provide shelter for children in urgent need. We are also sending water purification tablets to make sure children and their families have access to safe drinking water.”
Within hours of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastating parts of Nepal, UNICEF had delivered water purification tablets, oral rehydration salts and hygiene kits to affected communities, thanks to 30 metric tonnes of prepositioned emergency stocks kept ready in UNICEF warehouses in Nepal. These will help stave off water borne diseases for families who have little access to safe water as a result of the earthquake. More than a dozen informal settlements have sprung up around the Kathmandu and UNICEF and local partners are trucking safe water and hygiene supplies to all of them.
UNICEF and partners are working with the Government of Nepal to ensure humanitarian supplies are delivered and distributed to affected communities as quickly as possible through a combination of shipping supplies on commercial and charter airlines. Humanitarian agencies are contending with significant delays due to technical restrictions on maximum landing weight and the use of wide-body aircrafts. The congestion at Kathmandu airport, due to constrained warehousing capacity and limited means to distribute incoming cargo, has compounded logistical challenges.
UNICEF has launched a US$50 million appeal to support its humanitarian response to the earthquake in Nepal over the next 90 days.
