i love jennifer jareau. i love jennifer jareau because she's a realist. i love her because she knows how people feel, in real life, not hypothetically. i love her because she collected butterflies as a kid. she was a sad child. she knew she would need to run away from home so she excelled in school and excelled in soccer to make sure she had a way out. she knows how to talk to people having the worst day of their lives and she knows how to flirt with people to get what she wants. she's smart enough to do anything she wants but she doesn't want ambition, she wants safety. she runs when things get hard and she has a bag packed ready for when it happens. she avoids the tough conversations and she lies to her friends' faces. her life is hers and she's not going to let anyone else decide that for her. she's tough and mean and she cries about it. she feels like her life has happened around her, and it has. jj in 2003 would never guess what jj in twenty years would look like, and at some point you come to the realization that it's both terrifying and comforting to not know where your life is taking you... what your future is.

I would pay so much money for a Criminal Minds spinoff that digs into the backstories of the team we already know — what pushed them to join the FBI, their childhoods, the moments that shaped them. (Not some random new characters!! we simply don’t care, and it would flop xoxo.)

We’ve spent Evolution learning so much about criminals’ minds (cough cough Voit) — now I want to know what shaped Emily, Hotch, JJ, Tara, and the rest into who they are today. We’ve had little hints, like Hotch’s “and some people grow up to catch them,” but imagine: Emily Prentiss bouncing around Europe (and apparently doing basketball?), JJ trying to figure out who she was and how to get out of a small town haunted by her sister, Tara’s complicated family history and losing her mother… there’s so much there!!!

People would absolutely watch this. But it would only work if it stayed true to the characters we already love — and if the writers actually rewatched their own show and paid attention to what those characters have said. It shouldn’t overwrite canon; it should enrich it.
