2014: A Squarespace Odyssey
Things are heating up; yes literally as it's summer, but 2014 has been a killer year so far and this also includes an unexpected twist that required some major introspection, seeking peer counsel, and basically coming to terms with forgoing my baller freelance life.
Well, put it this way, I traded one baller life for another. I'm now a designer at Squarespace.
Not an Apple ad.
It's going to be more of a focus on designing things with a purpose, and I'm already privy to the importance of process, iteration, and well-conceived moves here.
Joining a talented team, my favorite drinks on hand, and 71" inches of screen helped this decision along. But that's not even half of it.
But whatever, I'm just happy that Earth/Mark Lanegan/Southern Lord thing happened (or is about to happen).
And speaking of an odyssey, there's also this coming up.
You're Anti... You're AntiSocial (Media)
While recently pondering this ever-shrinking echo chamber of modern society, I had been thinking about my experience(s) on Facebook and how difficult it has become to use, and if it actually makes sense to keep using it. In a regard, it's poorly designed and reminds me of a nightmare such as Windows 98 with how non-intuitive, ugly and messy it is. This includes:
Confusing photo and photo album processes.
Microscopic and cumbersome message UI at the bottom of the screen (also true for mobile).*
Restricted messaging such that contacting people you're not connected to is made possible only by a charge of $1. Otherwise, your message gets unceremoniously dumped to the "Other" inbox (we're a few years into the latter and there are still citizens discovering this folder). Interfaces should organize, not judge information. Anyway, this is a business model?
Public sharing of items you post that were intended for a "Custom" audience.
*I was preparing some notes for this blog post and part of my research was the message UI (and in this case, mobile). I proceeded to access the emoticon section to drop one into my message body as I tapped away, and discovered that just selecting one sent it through as a new message automatically. That was unexpected and kind of pesky (luckily I chose my test recipient wisely in the event of a somewhat anticipated mishap).
I then considered Facebook's uses; regardless of whether you're giving or receiving:
1. You just want to look at bullshit pictures: Instagram. 2. You enjoy quick news links or witty one-liners from the likes of your own people, Rachel Maddow, or Boobs Radley in a feed: Twitter (perhaps with TweetDeck). 3. You're a business or band: Talk to someone about this.
Both replete with a simplified and efficient UI/UX scheme.
Well shit, Facebook is designed to keep you on the site, not to create a more enjoyable experience or easier process to execute most (not all) useful actions. And, to serve ads (don't get me started on those auto-play videos). Clearly that is a commerce angle, and in this scenario, we are the goods. Because let's consider the data mining and habit tracking with all these hashtags and Likes.
Remember Facebook Home? Of course you don't. That was the phone app suite for Android that totally failed. The HTC First, the first (haha, and probably only) phone pre-loaded with Home, sold so poorly that the company cut the price from $99 to $1 in less than a month!
Hey, I'm just writing a bunch of bullshit about this on a blog, but this guy actually sat down and rethought the whole thing earlier this year, and totally redesigned the motherfucker from the ground up. Some of it seemed to have a Windows 8 feel in a sense, and I also found the UX to be a bit cluttered and unorganized.
If it looks better, are you better served by its purpose?
And therein lies the inherent problem…
Internet ubiquity is clearly the goal for Facebook HQ, but from a UX perspective, it's a platform that probably allows you to do too much. And that is why a modern and clean redesign is not enough.
And finally to conclude, your entire family is now on the goddamned thing. Ew.
The new Black Day Creative Facebook page is now alive
You shall Like. Now that my new site is done, I created the Facebook page. New work is coming (!) and I have some blog topics in queue. Behold... facebook.com/blackdaycreative
Nice New Outfit
The new Black Day Creative site is complete, and it's snowing! Now in the wake of some long hours and days, the site is now live with new work and new tricks. And now there's even more new stuff coming such as…
It was just confirmed that I'll be doing a site for a video editor whose credits include that black metal doc Until the Light Takes Us and the to-be-released The Color of Noise (doc about Am/Rep records which I am very interested in seeing). I've done some preliminary research on utilizing Vimeo's API so that should be fun and cool and also awesome.
A steady diet of everything becomes you.
Speaking of things that are ruling, Eagle Twin has been crushing and the majority of this site was designed and built on The Unkindness of Crows; if you can imagine Tom Waits searching for grubs as the Melvins resonate the earth… It makes all kinds of sense. It's also on the top of my list of Top 10 Records of 2013 That Came Out in 2009 (there's another list that Spiritualized's Amazing Grace is dominating which is The 10th Anniversary of an Unremarkable Year).
#1 Chance Pirate Blog
Two major pieces of news here in New York City are 1) we have a new mayor, and 2) I have a new blog (I'll add item no. 3 which is that I'm being followed by Chocolate Milks of the World!).
What I am doing is now formally documenting my bitching on the internet with commentary about design/development, bands, and insomnia (wrapped in a faux-down duvet with a bottle of Guayaki).
The new office is ruling and some serious new work is in-progress.
Live from the stage; Atom Splitter PR production in-progress
I will not be bitching about the estimated 70% of lottery winners that go broke because 100% of lottery players are fucking idiots, but will be announcing fun stuff like new bands I'm working with and other full-scale sites and design work that will be coming out of this office, as well as little front-end tips that I uncover along the way, and mentioning Black Sabbath as much as possible.

Hello.
Rudie Can't Scale
I love when I start looking at a site that's in production on the iPad. All of your Media Queries have kicked in and you're seeing the transformed li'l bastard optimized on a cozy-cute touch device.
Sometimes shit ain't right and while you often know right away what's up, other times you have to explore a bit. I noticed that changing orientation from portrait to landscape on the iPad did not produce the "1024" size as I had seen when all my screens were looking killer in Responsinator. I remembered recently finding a discussion or two about omitting initial-scale=1.0 from the viewport meta tag in modern times, which I had done, so I wondered if that was the issue.
This parameter sets the initial zoom level and it seems that changing the orientation on the iPad (and possibly other devices) triggers a default zoom, therefore precluding the correct display size. Ultimate result: it is needed.
This is what you want: <meta name="viewport"content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
Adding initial-scale=1.0 fixed the issue and moving from portrait to landscape (and back) beautifully produced the correct layouts for each.
As an aside, I'll also take this time to mention that you probably don't ever want to use user-scalable=no which basically prevents the user from zooming in and out. That's a shitty experience to force on the user (like playing some of the songs on London Calling).
Custom wedding invitations printed on eco-friendly paper for a wedding at a really cool winery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The design was to be a bit casual yet slightly rustic and vintage. The package also features an insert card for the second reception party in Iowa.
Symptom of the Internet: Supreme Dickhead GoDaddy
Today simultaneously began and ended at the same time as I found it impossible to go to bed because I could not stop listening to Black Sabbath. I logged a few early morning hours of sleep before a meeting and then proceeded to get slapped in the face by the internet hand of doom.
Fuck.
Media Temple (my very own web host) was just acquired by GoDaddy. Not cool! I just recently took all my domains from GoDaddy and went elsewhere (not naming any names but; ok one name because they're great). GoDaddy keeps chasing me down and now I am still on the run.
Left ventricle of Bob Parsons
Just like you, I've also pondered the issues with GoDaddy, such as their support of SOPA, the [former] CEO's hunting of elephants, and basically just being rubbed the wrong way with the imagery/visuals of women in racing outfits. All things that I found annoying/unnecessary. PLUS, the site design/layout is horrendous in that you're constantly funneled into sales upgrades, which I always avoided. The whole vibe was gross.
The Verge said it best in that GoDaddy's "reputation will be a continued struggle." Similar to how Dolph Lundgren has won nothing but a long courageous battle against fame.
To conclude, some friends have recommended alternate hosts, and I've found some new ones myself; behold:
Rackspace, A Small Orange, Digital Ocean
I'm reluctant to drop MT only due to the hassle. But, principle will be the extra zeal to pick one and make a decision.
Because I care (new work)
I've been working hard on a site for Amy Sciarretto's new PR company (featuring Killswitch Engage and other big-time rock bands that tour the world). Really excited about this one and it's got a lot of fullscreen/responsive tablet-centric action going on.
I've also begun some content strategy work on a site for a cool gaming store in Williamsburg called Twenty Sided Store. They're currently growing and expanding; they've knocked down walls (both physical and creative) and I've been tasked with a complete redesign and front-end work for the new interactive site.
Why Yahoo!'s new logo does not matter
While at small sizes (whereas the clumsy bevel is barely noticeable) Yahoo!'s new logo at least seems more modern than the previous Bazooka Joe-inspired version, but they're a big company whose audience won't raise any issue with a PowerPoint object as a logo. It almost seems pointless to scrutinize it because there would be no discussion if this exact logo were that of some two-bit fax machine repair shop in the middle of Wisconsin. Is it a piece of crap that looks like clip art? Yes. Will anyone care besides designers? No. Believe me, I agree that it's painful, and that proprietary font business they're pushing is weak (Optihoo!?) but... have you seen their Angelfire-inspired web site? Fits right in.
Some old-ish work; a gatefold LP, CD, and limited edition art prints for Junius' 2011 album Reports from the Threshold of Death. The afterlife was a central theme and concept of the artwork.
Some more new work
Just completed two new sites that were pretty fun. Hard Nips are crazy and colorful (and a Japanese band) and indeed got a fullscreen video backdrop, and JJB PR is a clean and modern one-pager for a boutique PR company.
