Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1834-1912) “Judith” (1892)
In 1578, underground tombs in Rome revealed early Christian martyrs’ remains—later known as “Catacomb Saints.”
These relics were sent across Europe, lavishly decorated with gold, jewels, and 18th-century garments.
One of the most famous collections is in Waldsassen Basilica, Germany, housing 10 ornately adorned skeletons crafted by artisans like Cistercian goldsmith Adalbart Eder.
They symbolized a sacred link to early Christianity and were venerated across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
