It’s actually in reference to the original Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sir Doyle cared so little about his characters that he carelessly had John’s wife call John James once. He also carelessly referred to Mrs Hudson as Mrs Turner once, and that’s used in the series by having Mrs Turner be a fellow landlady friend of Mrs Hudson’s (“Mrs Turner next door”).

I’m reblogging this because I mydelf am pretty confuset about how to feel about the whole thing. On one hand, this is completely true, on the other hand, Misfits has, from the very start, been a show that glorifies violence, drugs and exploits all kind of sexual relationships. For example, Alisha basically raped Curtis in the first series. If people are complaining about this, why is no one complaining that the show gives the impression that it’s okay to kill a bunch of people and behave horribly in general? I guess people are selective with what they want to complain about. As I said, not taking any stand on this, just putting the tought out there!

I feel like it’s to be expected in a sci-fi/supernatural series that the body count is going to be piled high… But rape is another thing entirely. It’s not something that should be OK to be thrown around as a viable solution to a supernatural problem, even within a genre show that regularly pushes boundaries. I guess what I’m trying to say is, regardless of if it was in character, essential to the plot, or WHAT — why would anyone even want to write something like that into the show? Especially when it was basically just shrugged off afterward. At least with Curtis and Alisha, he did bring up the fact that she did rape him, and there was an open discussion about that. But to do the Alex and Finn scene for pure comedy, and then follow up with jokes about it, that was the part of it that was just wrong, plain and simple.

It's just like joegilgun said. Rape is completely different. Yes, murder is wrong, of course it is. But making rape a solution for a problem and then using it to make jokes is really upsetting. Rape is not to be used a comedy, never. It just continues this culture.

Why is no one talking about the fact that Alex raped Finn???

It makes me so mad that this is just brushed off because it’s two guys, I don’t think they would’ve let the characters react the same way had it been for example Jess and not Finn.  

(On a different note, that was the most unrealistic display of anal sex ever, it’s not a vagina you can just ‘slide into’ easily, if you’re going to go there, at least make it accurate.)

I definitely talked about this after the episode aired and my rants on the subject were pretty much just met with indifference and people saying that it was OK because the storyline called for it, but the fact is, it was really bad form of Overman to even write an episode where anal rape was the only viable solution to the main conflict. I think most people found it funny because male-on-male rape is still something that’s sort of a running joke on TV (think about all the “don’t drop the soap” jokes you’ve ever heard) but it wasn’t funny at all, and the fact that the intention of that scene was specifically to make people laugh at rape was in my opinion, a completely unforgivable act on Overman’s part. The fact that he actually went through with the filming of it even after LAWYERS HAD TO GET INVOLVED TO MAKE SURE IT WAS OK TO AIR ON TELEVISION should have been a wake-up call for his twisted ass.

I didn't even know about the lawyer part, but as you said, if common sense didn't tip them off right away that this was offensive, hurtful and completely uncalled for at least the legal issues should've given them a hint.

When Alisha used her power to sleep with Curtis it was played down as well but at least he stated straight out 'you raped me'. This time it was all just for laughs, which is unbelievable.

2) given the way Haru slips himself in between Rin’s legs in the second-to-last one and the way Rin straddles him in the last one…safe to say their natural tendency is to go for Haru/Rin (vs. Rin/Haru) :3
