The Real World of Raymond Reddington // Pt. 1
Outstanding
Yep. GIRLFRIEND. Word used in different episodes. 'NOT OUR IMAGINATIONS.'
S1E22 The Blaclist. The unforgivable act. Tom gives the hit list to Berlinâs man. Tom says âThatâs everyone.â Later, just before Red arrives to take care of matters, but after Cooper and Meera have already been attacked, Berlinâs man gives instructions over the phone: âLetâs deal with the other female agent first, then I want you to take care of the ginger.â Lizzie is the âother female agentâ.
Tomâs major crime is not the âpretend marriageâ that seems to be the focus of Lizzieâs problem with Tom, while that in itself is horribleâŚ.it is ^this. Not forgivable.
Exactly, nor can it ever fit with the behaviour of a fictional character who - even with his limited understanding of love - is supposed to be in love with the woman whoâs name he put on a hit list. Not to mention he brought her to fake!Berlin at gun point - why? Supposed, Tom had wanted to protect Liz, its not the logical choice to deliver the woman you supposedly love to the very man who wants her dead.
But that is what the show tried to sell me in S2. Tom luvs Liz.
Yet, they let Tom act the exact opposite in S1.
Except for the moment in S1E22 when Tom didnt pull the trigger of the gun he was holding against Lizs head, Tom acted selfishly in every moment that mattered, he chose himself (his safety, his mission, his desire/limited version of love etc.) over Liz (what is good for Liz, what Liz deserves, Lizâs safety etc.).
Tom chose lie over truth. At every crossroad moment there was the chance to choose differently, to declare his âloveâ and come clean, to ask forgiveness, to risk it all to give Liz a chance to decide for herself, to ask for a second chance. But no, instead Tom chose lies and emotional manipulation for the complete S1. S1E6 and the interrogation room scene are the showcase.
Tom chose selfishly to change the mission Red gave him, and became intimate with Liz, allowed her to fall in love with his fake personality, allowed her, the woman he supposedly loved to build her life, their marriage on a lie. Because *he* wanted to have a relationship with Liz, because *he* wanted to act on his feelings/desire, no matter the consequences for Liz.
Tom chose sefishly to pursue the adoption, while Liz was having second thoughts and while it also meant bringing a child into a relationship that was not only build on a lie by one parent but was also at the center of a mission with unkown orders or outcome.
Tom chose to assault Liz physically - twice - to escape discovery or captivity. I canât see a person do that to a loved one just to save their own skin. There are a dozen possible scenarios, the most simple one he could have simply abandoned his mission.
Tom chose to shield himself with Lizâs body while protecting himself from Red and held a gun against her head.
And last but definitely not least, like mentioned above, Tom chose to include Lizs name, the woman he supposedly loves on a kill list.
If TPTB thinks these actions can be accommodated with the portrayal of a man who supposedly fell in love with the woman who was his target and thats something I should root forâŚ
For me these are the actions of a man who never cared enough or at all for the well-being and feelings of the other person. And some are for me the very opposite of love, even for a fictional character who has a limited understanding of love.
Therefore, Tomâs high speed pseudo-redemption and K2 will for me always be a retcon. Period.
And I detest it. All of it.
^^^^ [slow clap]
ITA w/ all of this except: Tom not pulling the trigger in 122 was not selfless either, IMO. He didnât pull the trigger because he didnât want to die a horrible death later. I mean, just imagine what Red would have done to him if heâd shot Liz. They would have had to collect his remains from multiple continents with small tweezers and magnifying glasses.
But yes, Tom has been a selfish, toxic, manipulative dick since day one.
He doesnât love Liz and nobody will ever convince me of that. He loves that little fantasy world of ânormalcyâ where Liz was/is nothing but an obedient prop. He was all smiles while she was unaware, playing along & making him happy, but the second she became suspicious and it started to threaten this illusion, he responded with anger and/or violence, protecting not Liz but this fantasy.
He called duping her to make himself feel better his biggest success FFS. If thatâs not a giant red flag right there, I donât know what is. Also, he did marry her as per Berlinâs orders and you bet he accepted serious money for it. You donât buy a Mustang and a fancy boat on a teacherâs salary. So yeah, Red didnât lie. This marriage was business for Tom. Not just business but business nonetheless. And sure, he got emotionally involved: he loved that Liz was in love with him. It made him feel good. It stroked his considerable ego. It was all about him. Otherwise he would have told Liz the truth a long time ago.
And this âtrendâ clearly continued in s2 as well. He tried to recreate their ârelationshipâ and tried to manipulate her to achieve that, e.g. he ran a little smear campaign against Red (while being much less forthcoming about his own shittiness) and baited Liz with a promise of answers. Not much came of that, though, since he spent 99% of his time looking at pictures of boats and trying to get into her pants.
He cared as long as there was something in it for him. He knew Liz was in danger but I guess that baggage became too inconvenient after heâd realized she wouldnât be back for more boatsex, so he sailed away. Because again, his own safety, needs & wants took priority.
As always.
can you just stop being so adorable? thatâd be great!
Iâm done
Sigh.
Seriously though. Does anyone besides The Blacklist writers actually enjoy Tom Keen? Anyone?
Only as a baddie. The redemption arc was so poorly written and disregarded all past behavior that it would have been laughable had it not been on my favorite fucking show. I donât like when characters kill completely innocent people, get away with it and then later get laid on their sparkly new boat. And with the woman they abused and lied to for years. Thatâs not character development, thatâs misogyny, plain and simple.
No. Just, no.
I would be in favor of Fakob acknowledging his redemption will never fucking happen and then turning completely bad but thatâs me.
If Tom shows up in S3 as a badass who played everyone in S2 then that would be a plot twist I would cheer.
Absolutely^^^ Tom being evil all along would have made an excellent cliff hanger but TPTB canât seem to get their heads out of their asses to realize it. Itâs a shame really because the Tom thing pretty much ruined season 2 and was a total waste of time. Do they really think if Spader wasnât on the show fans would stick around for the shit they were doling out to us. Please
Bokenkamp calls to pitch a show to FOX and Chris Carter answers the phone.
CC: (after introductions) But, you already have a show don't you?
JB: *beams* Yeah, The Blacklist.
CC: Right, right, I loved the first season. *a beat* Season two was kind of rough, wasn't it.
JB: Noo...not really. We are still the number one drama on NBC.
CC: Look at the numbers, Jon.
JB: *sigh* we slipped a little, yeah.
CC: Why do you think that is?
JB: I am really not sure to be honest. We had a great love story this season.
CC: Correction: You had a great love story *last* season. *rubs forehead* if you're going for slow burn Jon you're doing it wrong.
JB: Oh you mean Red and Liz? *nervous laughter* Well he's not her dad.
CC: *eye roll* Yeah that was some surprise. You know answering that is not enough. You have to help the story along. *forehead crease intensifies* Let's talk about your two leads. Do they have chemistry?
JB: They get along great.
NOT what I meant. From what I can tell from Season 1, they had chemistry from the pilot. you need to use that...capitalize on it. Put them in close proximity of each other...have them make a lot of meaningful eye contact...the occasional touches...sexual innuendo. You did some of that already in season 1, but then you seemed to lose your way a bit.
JB: Well, they're going on the run together.
CC: Perfect! Finally. You may be able to salvage this after all.
JB: What?
CC: Oh nothing. Now what about the supporting cast. You've got a lot of players on the field...I'd consider benching some.
JB: But Ryan Eggold...
CC: Tom needs to die Jon. It's the only way whatever you've done to Liz's character can recover. And Ressler...do you remember on The X-Files how Agent Pendrell had a crush on Scully, but Agent Pendrell wasn't end game so he had to go?
JB: *nodding*
CC: Trim the field. Keep it Red/Liz. That's why people watch this show, after all. The X-Files is not about aliens and The Blacklist is not about creepy criminals that may or may not have been inspired by The X-Files. Stay focused.
JB: Ok...
CC: Let me ask you a question. Do you have a central mythology to the show? I mean are there large, over-arching questions concerning these characters that beg to be answered?
JB: Red is not Liz's dad.
CC: I KNOW that. But what about Red? Remember in Season 1 where you alluded to this tragic thing with his family, and when you brought on the ex it was a major let down? She needs to go, too.
JB: You basically want me to kill everyone.
CC: Everything dies, Jon. But no, I only want you to realize what's important. Some characters didn't need to die. Meera, Fitch...even Berlin was underused. You set him up as your Smoking Man and then you write him off like that?
JB: *small voice* it was necessary for the story...
CC: And whose story would that be? Yours? Are you sure about that?
JB: ...
CC: Can you look at season 1 and honestly say that you have been truthful to the story you set out to tell?
JB: We have a lot of talented writers--
CC: Who can't even agree on how to spell "Lizzie." Listen...I'm telling you this because I hate to see this happen. Season Two was a wash. You get a mulligan, thank God, but you better take advantage of it.
JB: What would you have me do?
CC: Answer some major questions, definitively, and without trickery. Teasing an obvious answer to a ridiculous question does not denote intelligence, nor does it hook the viewers. When you answer big questions, you are free to pose new ones, and I'd start with Red's past. That needs to be settled (also consider killing Jennifer Reddington). The second thing I would do would be to capitalize on this Season 3 setup you've got. The key to saving this show is more Red and Liz. That's your golden goose.
JB: We divide the stories among ourselves, though, and the Lizzington writers--
CC: Did you just use a ship name? *chuckling* maybe there's hope for you after all. Forget certain writers doing certain things. You need to decide as a group the direction you want to take, the background for each character, and work together to make sure everyone is on the same page...I really can't believe I'm having to tell you this.
JB: Is this about the flashdrive thing?
CC: This is about the Season 2 thing Jon.
JB:*scribbling notes* So, you think if I do these things that the show will get higher ratings?
CC: Can't fail. The formula worked in Season 1...no reason to change it. Stick with what works.
JB: And that's Lizzington?
CC: There you go again! Yes, that's Lizzington. And tight writing with attention to detail. Interesting Blacklisters. A background for each of these characters that is consistent and that honors who they are. You good with that?
JB: Yeah...I think I can do that.
CC: You can do it. You've already done it. And don't give up the slow burn...it's better when everyone has to wait for it. As for the salvation of this show...well let's just say I want to believe.
*end call*
This is glorious
Caught in the riptide I was searching for the truth There was a reason I collided into you Calling your name in the midnight hour Reaching for you from the endless dream So many miles between us now But you are always here with me
A perfect song for the most perfect OTPâŚ
Yes!
The sin eater and his ray of light.Â
Yeah
Hear that Daddygaters? Itâs been answered âŚjust let it go people âŚI mean you can ship whatever you want in your head but just accept that he isnât her dad in canonâŚ.it must get a bit frustrating for everyone on the cast/production to be constantly asked if he is her dad when they already answered it 100 times âŚ(no offence to anyone⌠itâs just frustrating)..
Glory be!

READ AND INWARDLY DIGEST!
âSure, the Lizzington dynamic is great... but I donât see it as romantic.â
I hear it over and over⌠but the experts over at TVTropes.org would probably disagree with you.
Taken individually, they might not amount to much - but when you look at the narrative devices that are traditionally romantic, the writers have been inundating us with old school romance for two seasons.
(all of the following gifs are courtesy of the wonderful asundayinaugust - follow her, love her, bow at the feet of her beautiful gifs! - and all quotes are from TVTropes.org)
Red String of Fate ââŚwhether youâre born with it or have to have it installed⌠the match it suggests for you is your True Love.â
Declaration of Protection âA person (usually The Hero) has her or his motivation built around protecting another person. Most of the time, itâs his or her Love Interestâ
Held Gaze âOften though, they will find themselves gazing deeply into each otherâs eyes, one indication of their UST.â
Convenient Slow Dance âThis will also happen with two people who already know each other, and who have unspoken feelings for one another.â
Chic and Awe âSuddenly, the person being talked about walks through the door and the complainer is utterly awestruck mid-sentence. This happens most often at some sort of formally arranged event (especially dress parties where everyone is in cocktail gowns and tuxedos, or something similar)â
Everyone Can See It ââŚeveryone around themâsuch as their friends, family, and enemiesâcan see their obvious feelings for each otherâ
Holding Hands âWhen holding hands is shown between people who can reasonably be eventually romantically linked, it is often either symbolic of the link or a prelude to itâ
I Have Your Wife âThe Big Bad tries to get the hero (or someone else) to do his bidding by taking someone precious from him and essentially holding them to ransom. Itâs often a significant other, frequently a wife or girlfriend.â
Reblogging myself because after last night it bears repeating. RIP Daddygate.
READ AND GET IT! TBL is giving us two seasons worth of 'tells.' A huge layer cake of romantic plot device 'tells' with more layers than the Tower of Pisa!
Iâm watching The Blacklist: Tom Connolly (No. 11) (s2.22)Â http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4578450/Â #IMDb #nowwatching
Age: forever 31. His story is now her story.Â
What a beautiful pair they make. Bonnie and Clyde. Â
BONNIE AND CLYDE
She chose Red.
I repeat, she chose Red.
The ray of light has finally accepted her hideous fish.
Yes, the woman who doesnât want any regrets chose Red. This is so very important.
âŚ
I understood it, she went back to what was familiar, another illusion - an temporarily escape - Under those circumstances - She is who she is and canât be that with Tom. Didnât you guys hear that she said TOM and NOT Jacob? That is big in itself, Yes i hated that she came across as weak [and âi want youâ why TPTB?]âŚBut she was under the impression that A) Only Tom cared. B) She could have ran away with him, but the moment she woke up..a new Liz rose - She made her choice in that instance - This Liz killed the other Tom to protect what she holds most dear. In the end, she chose to stay and fight just like Red said she should and then when everything went to tits, she protected Cooper again [her real father figure] and ran to the ONLY man right for who she is now, the only man who could accept her, protect her, give everything up for HER. Â
Redâs story is similar to Lizâs - both had to walk away from their past liveâs their past selves because they were forced to make a decision, Both were set-up, Both were drawn to something that was unhealthy. I only see parallels.Â
Fantastic summaryâŚthis is going to be a wild ride indeed!
Yeah
Wow this is the sexiest man on planet earth! Has this been discussed before? Is this already a thing and I didnât realize it all this time?
Yeah!
Happily waiting for all of those dumb TV reviewers and anchors and journalists to FINALLY have to say, âRed is NOT Lizâs father like weâve been writing/saying for the last two yearsâŚâ
Mmmm⌠Gonna taste sooooo good.
They should interrupt regular programming with a damn presidential announcement
'YEAH'
My brain is scrambled but here goes nothing:
Cooper: my love for you isâŚI have no words. Throwing the pills at Connelly!! Just break my heart man!!!
ResslerâŚ.the boyscout wonder actually let Liz escape. Wow
Liz running into Redâs carâŚ.hell yes Tom on his fucking boatâŚ.oh hell no
Red to Tom âyour assistance is not necessaryâ unf Red to Liz. âBe safeâ unf
Cooper cryingâŚCooper not dyingâŚ.Cooper badassâŚ.just Cooper!!!
I will hate Ford Mustangs forever!! The sex sceneâŚ.Iâm not even surprised. Did you get off on that Jon Bokenkamp? How romanticâŚsex with the liar/abuser/COP KILLER. Fucking insane and LizâŚ. just whatever. Iâm over you right now.
Red: âThe truth will outâ. Well I hope so Red but when??!!
Liz shoots ConnellyâŚkinda sad to see Connelly go. Wish she had shot Tom.
Tom not dead and leaving on his boat: Tom youâre a murderer and should be in prisonâŚ.or dead. TPTB leaves option open to bring back TomâŚ.guys you suck.
Liz remembersâŚ.Redâs beautiful broken face. I may not recover. Liz you donât deserve him at this point so there. Both on the most wanted list and on the runâŚunf (but Iâm still pissed Liz) Daddygate over..meh.
Goodbye scene with Dembeđ˘ Return of Ressler the boyscout wonderâŚ.expected. Liz putting her head on Redâs shoulder⌠in no way makes up for the sex but it was sweet. Maybe a baby step toward getting her shit straight.
Red⌠You beautiful manâŚyou beautiful soul. No words just love for you right now.
TPTB apparently donât see the irony of having Child!Liz kill the man who was abusing her mother, while having Adult!Liz declare her love and have sex with her abuser.
Yes, all of the above! This what what Iâve been saying. Tom needed to go (and I donât mean sailing off on his boat free and clear). There is nothing good about promoting abusive relationships with a lying, cheating, murdering imposter.
Bolding for extreme relevance. My disgust for the PTBs âif he loves you itâs all alrightâ attitude about this know no bounds.
shame tbl for that sick crap anti fem sex scene
