- What's Black Snow About? -

Black Snow is about our protagonists Kirsi and Nyx! Kirsi is a star-touched Magi hailing from the kingdom of Cal'deur. Falsely imprisoned by the kingdom, Kirsi was set to be executed in a gladiatorial style ring. Nyx is an Executioner - an enslaved Ddraikin used by the kingdom of Cal'deur to slaughter prisoners. He was the Executioner chosen to kill Kirsi. During their fight someone prematurely opened the wrong gate which allowed for Kirsi and Nyx to make their escape. Together the pair flee the city and end up at the very bottom of the continent of Gal'ruk. Now free, the unlikely pair form an even more unlikely deal: if Nyx helps keep Kirsi safe until they reach a mysterious village northeast of them - since she now has a broken leg and ribs - then Kirsi will return a special wristband which he claims belongs to him. Why he's so adamant to get this wristband, he won't say. Along the way, the pair are pursued by the two princes of Cal'deur as well as the Seeker and Keeper forces sent by the prince's mother - Queen Imowen - to recapture the pair and bring them back to Cal'deur. Nyx and Kirsi must learn to work together to survive this unfamiliar and unforgiving world as wanted fugitives if they want to complete their journey alive.

Cal'deur Seeker/Keeper Rankings

Cal'deur - like the other Haenulin kingdoms - has a wide range of different militaristic rankings amongst their troops. Squires, Knights, Archers, Cavalry, Captains, and Generals all make up the base of their militaries. But these are not the rankings who are trained and tasked with retrieving and maintaining the Ddraikins to turn into Executioners. That special honor belongs to the ranks listed below:

- Keepers -

Spark

The apprentice rank all fallen star magi are accepted as. They will either become either Mages or Kites. This rank is classified under the Keeper rank since they are trained in skills important for a Keeper or Seeker. It an individual's choice to pursue either faction upon graduating apprenticeship.

Mage

Derived from the word "Magi," Mages are the basic Keeper faction, and are also the largest Keeper faction. Their main objective is to move Executioners between the arena and their cells, keep them bathed, hydrated, and fed. They are also responsible for restraining Executioners if they become too aggravated or unruly.

Warlock

The highest ranking of the Keepers. With only about 3 - 5 active at one time per kingdom, they're the leaders and consultants who speak on behalf of the Keepers in government situations. They are also responsible for teaching the Sparks in their skills as Keepers. They are the most powerful rank, and will assist in restraining out-of-control Executioners.

Sparrow

The apprentice rank of Seekers. Only fully fledged knights are allowed to become Sparrows, as the training for Sparrows is far more intense than the training given to knights. . All Seekers - with the exception of magi who are accepted as sparks - are initially accepted as Sparrows.

Tern

This is the tier above Sparrows. This is the first official rank of Seeker and it is also the largest rank by populace. All Sparrows are knighted into this position until they decide to specialize as either Larks or Kites (if they're fallen star Magi). Terns are the soldier rank of the Keepers, and are trained in a wide variety of weapons, and as cavalry soldiers.

Lark

The archery rank for Seekers. This rank primarily focuses on long distance attacks using bows or crossbows. They wear a green and brown uniform - as compared to the striking gold and black of the Terns - to better camouflage in the natural environment around them. They're trained to be stealthy and silent, and are comparable to rouges in skill. During the winter, they wear all white uniforms to hide amongst the snow.

Kites

The only Seeker rank specialized for the Magi. These are the most easily recognizable of the Seeker ranks as their uniforms are devoid of most of the decorative cloaks or specialized armor the other ranks boast. Kites need to be able to move quickly and use their magic without obstruction to take down powerful Ddraikins. Only fallen star Magi may become Kites. Even amongst the Seekers, Kites are looked down on for being Magi.

Martin (Commander)

The equivalent of Captains, Martins are the first leader position amongst the Seekers. They command their individual party of Seekers, and lead them on missions. If a Hawk is deemed unfit to lead, Martins will temporarily assume the position of leading commander until the Hawk can be readministered or replaced.

Hawk (Commander)

The equivalent of generals, Hawks are the highest position of Seekers and also participate in politics. They hold command over all Seekers in a kingdom.

As for something I haven't shared yet hmm... Oh! Alongside the Leenulumyx, the Magi keep these "chickens" of sorts that have incredibly vibrant feathers! They're about the same size as a chicken and are a sort of chicken/duck hybrid in that they're amphibious (can be on both the land and in the water)

They're called Athutos! (Water bird of many colors)

Norska's character sheet! He's Nyx mount (when he and Kirsi eventually arrive in the Ddraikin clans!) A gentle giant, Norska prefers to spend his days running through the snow, enjoying elk jerky treats, and hunting with Nyx.

Leenulumyx ("moon sheep") are a medium sized mammal which the magi keep for their wool, milk, horns, and meat. The unique conjoined shape of their horns distinguishes these sheep from other species in the haenulin kingdoms. Their unique wool - often used for creating clothing and fabric textiles - changes color with the phases of the moon. During the full moon, their coats are a pure white while during a new moon, are an inky black. Magi track the change in the sheep's wool to predict when the next star shower will occur as their wool will develop a glittering sheen in advance.

Honestly, love Kirsi's haircut so much; a lot of the time in media, women being even slightly androgynous or masculine is shown as 'ugly' or something that needs to be fixed, and it sucked when I always liked those styles. So, it's nice to see Kirsi, woman, actually have shorter hair!

(sorry if this came off rude or ranty in any way; both these styles and more feminine ones are awesome, it's just hard sometimes to find good representation of women like this, even if it's just a haircut! Hope you're doing well!)

It didn't come off as rude at all! And thank you, I'm doing well. I also agree, I love seeing more androgynous/masculine women in media since they feel so few and far between in modern media!

I intentionally want Kirsi to come off as more hot-headed and tomboyish to compare to her friend Tiasa who is more soft spoken and feminine!

Unfortunately Kirsi's short hair wasn't her first choice of hairstyle. Long hair is very important for magi culturally (since they view it as being connected to the magic trees the Shepherds tend to) so Kirsi also used to wear her hair long in a bit braid. It was cut off when she was imprisoned by Cal'deur as a way to dehumanize her. She grows it out for a period of time afterwards before she cuts it short again! It's a way for her to reclaim her trauma from Cal'deur and heal into the leader she becomes in the end!

Sorry for all the radio silence with new art, school has kept me super busy! I do have some headshots of some new character sheets I've been tinkering on in my free time though!

Where did your OCs get their names from and why did you pick them for those characters?

Please don't apologize! I'm overjoyed to have someone who is just as excited about my oc's as I am!

Each of my characters names came from a few places!

Kirsi's was an evolution of two prior wip names: Kiki and then Kiri. I felt that the second version was lacking so I added an 's' and got Kirsi! Her last name Stellasir was taken from the Latin word for "star". The -sir suffix doesn't mean anything quite yet since I'm still developing some conlangs for this story.

For Nyx, that actually isn't his true name. When Kirsi asked him for his name, he wouldn't give it so she decided to give him one. She chose Nyx since in her native language, it means "night". Kirsi named him this because of his dark scales.

Fenrir was named after the famous wolf from Norse mythology. It was a holdover name from earlier on in the writing process before I'd solidified the cultural influences for the haenulins (mainly England and Rome). It just sorta stuck around!

For Callum, I borrowed the name from The Dragon Prince lol. I used to be a big fan of the show and I liked the name! His and Fenrir's last name "von Rosenberg" was borrowed from a character from a Minecraft roleplay 😂

For Tia, her full name is Tiasa Lumicantus. I liked the name Tia and added the 'sa' at the end to make it sound more interesting. As for her last name, I took the latin words for "light" and I believe "music" and mashed them together.

Lokie has similar roots in Norse myth although I added an 'e' at the end to make it special. 😂 In the context of the story, the name is a word from Nyx's native language which roughly translates to "trickster" or "nuisance". He wasn't a fan of Lokie when they first met but the little raven grew on him!
