The sting operation led to the rescue of 54 women, 14 children, and put hundreds of men seeking illegal sex behind bars.

In India, $25 is the going rate for a child laborer. And over 4,000 children are trafficked every month from the state of Bihar, alone. These children are put on trains by middlemen and sent to distant factories. They rarely see their families again.

The Norwegian Aftenposten reality web series Sweatshop features three young fashion bloggers that get to travel to Cambodia where they get sent to see how fast fashion clothes are made and actual spend a day behind the sewing machine. It is of course a cruel awakening for bloggers and they ask themselves what kind of life it is to work over 12 hours per day and then come home and barely able to afford food for the family.

Sweatshops are industries and factories where workers have unreasonably low wages and are working in appalling conditions. For both women and men physical and sexual violence are common, usually from the managers and supervisors that are supposed to guide the work. Women are forced to use contraception because a pregnancy should not keep her from work. The most commonly produced in sweatshops’s clothing, shoes, coffee, chocolate, toys and bananas - think therefore, if possible, to choose products that are ethically produced.

Aftenposten’s web series is extremely important and hopefully a wake-up call for many. It is possible to change and help these people, but then we have to pull together and do it together. By making demands on the companies behind these sweatshops, maybe we can make a difference and give these people a better future. We as consumers have the opportunity to influence and vote with our wallets. Think about what you want to support with your money the next time you make a purchase.

590 slave laborers were rescued from debt bondage in the United States!

Hundreds of Indian laborers were promised permanent US residency in exchange for work in Texas and Mississippi. After paying $25,000, they were trapped in jobs they didn’t agree to. When the men complained about work conditions or tried to leave, they were threatened and forced to stay.
