Despite the gathering dusk, the forest beyond the village continued its quiet life. A group of children wearing strange dog masks began to brawl on the packed edge of the forest. Two of the children were wrestling, clearly trying to knock each other down into the snow, while a third, as if a privileged leader, watched from the sidelines.
Suddenly, everything became quiet, and the masked figures froze, looking at me. A vague sense of unease was evoked by their masks, with their dark eye sockets—the kind you get when encountering a pack of young dogs, still mere puppies, but already capable of attacking and knocking you to the ground.
However, immediately behind me, approaching footsteps crunched through the snow.
Black Dog: "What kind of lonely, lost soul is wandering around here? Looking for trouble, little bone? Don't come to us for trouble, go deeper into the forest. We respect cultured, civilized recreation, walks, games... Everything human!"
The pack leader's tone seemed friendly, but his words were laced with slyness. On his final sentence, he raised his voice to be heard by his companions, and they burst into barking laughter, which did nothing to dilute the gloom in their eyes.
An overgrown ravine on the edge of the village has long been a refuge for young people from the local orphanage. Young ragamuffins of varying degrees of neglect hide here from the all-seeing eye of adults.
An unofficial "free cage" territory, entwined with branches.
Not all orphanage children hide in the wilderness. You can encounter the notorious snoop Fedya Makaladov, nicknamed Korolyok, anywhere, and most often at the crossroads near the boiler room.
He's not so much scary as he is useful. For a penny, you can get the latest gossip or childhood tales.
Or an kick if you call Korolyok by his name instead of his nickname.
Korolyok: "Got a cigarette? I'm really craving a smoke. The weather's freezing, and asking for warmth isn't comme il faut—the director's checking your pockets. Share, don't be greedy, and I'll be in your debt, sweetie. You ask, I answer."
Korolyok: "What? 'Tell me about a giant bird'—is that some kind of joke? You want the ostrich or the fairytale Rukh, smartass?
...No problem, just two cigarettes. And that's the brotherly thing to do, considering you're asking for the orphanage legend about the Golden Eagle."
(The nickname "Korolyok" sounds like "little king" and is simultaneously the name of a small bird Regulus)
