Most of the electronic devices consists of an EMI Filter, either as a separate entity or being embedded in circuit boards so as to reduce the high frequency noise which may interfere with other devices. These emissions can be both conducted and radiated, means noise can either travels through electrical conductors, or through air as well in the form of magnetic or radio waves.
There are few sources from where an emi comes. It can be produced externally by appliances or power cords, or even generated along power lines to the equipment. Depending upon the noise level, the filter design and attenuation power differs.
A typical emi filter possess passive components capacitors and inductors together to form LC circuits. Here, an inductor allows DC (low frequency current) to travel and blocking unwanted high range currents. Whereas, a capacitor helps in diverting the high frequency noise away from filter input line by providing a low impedance path.
The shunting capacitors here will redirect current in a specific range and high frequency, away from a circuit or component. This feeds the high frequency interference into inductors which were arranged in series.
There are few methods which can eliminate the adverse effects of noisy disturbances in the power line. These are-
-> Using a balanced line, like two wires of equal strength and opposite polarity when used turns as a positive signal and reduce emi.
-> To use the optical fibres, which can resist the emi pulses of laser light.
-> Shielding works best as when EMI enters here, it flows directly to ground without being interfered with the signals the cable is carrying.
-> Use direct connection like earth ground, as at this point energy in emi drains slowly. That's why electronic equipments consists a three-wire power plug including one grounding wire for maintaining emi.
