Soweto Gallery
Tobaka" is a striking painting by South African artist Teboho Makoatsa, primarily using acrylics, charcoal, and oil pastels on canvas. The title "Tobaka" is general a pet name for horses in Lesotho and the Free State, like bobby for dogs or kitty for cats, a detail that grounds the artwork in a specific, personal cultural context. The painting depicts a young boy sitting bareback on a large, dark horse, set against a plain, warm-toned background.
The scale is significant; the large format (91x61 cm) and the life-like proportions of the subjects create an intimate and imposing presence for the viewer. Makoatsa utilizes a unique, expressive style that appears abstract up close but coalesces into a reflective, realistic image from a distance Makoatsa employs a vibrant, almost "day-glow" color palette within the horse's form and the boy's clothing, using strong contrasts to ignite the subjects with life and energy. The rich, dark texture of the horse contrasts sharply with the boy's pink shirt and red trousers. The heavy, layered application of paint (impasto) gives the subjects a highly textured, sculptural quality, especially the horse's coat. This mark-making creates a sense of movement and raw energy. The figures dominate the frame, suggesting their importance and the artist's focus on character and emotion over environment. The plain background minimises distraction, drawing all attention to the interaction and the subjects themselves. The artwork captures a slice of rural South African Sotho life, often reflecting Makoatsa's own memories. The horse, a frequent motif in his work, is a symbol of resilience, hope, and determination.
The boy's calm, steady gaze suggests a quiet courage and a sense of transition—a space between childhood and the "unseen paths" ahead. The work evokes a powerful sense of cultural heritage and the inner journeys that shape individuals. The execution directly serves the concepts. The raw, expressive brushwork and vibrant colors communicate the vitality and resilience of the subjects, mirroring the strong cultural identity Makoatsa aims to portray. The use of mixed media creates a rich, tactile surface that makes the memory and the story feel tangible and immediate. The large scale ensures the figures command attention, reinforcing the importance of the narrative being shared.
Teboho Makoatsa is a South African artist known for vibrant, nostalgic paintings celebrating African spirit and memory . Born in 1984 in Fouriesburg, he's now based in Johannesburg. His signature "Girls in Heels" series features kids playfully emulating adults. Makoatsa's art explores everyday South African life, traditional culture, and joyful spirit, often depicting children and "South African souls" . He uses bold colours and unique techniques to capture expressive personalities. His work's been exhibited globally, with solo shows like his 2023 SA debut, and is represented by galleries like Living Artists Emporium . https://www.tebohomakoatsa.com/
The “Sunsets Are Better in Soweto” exhibition is a two‑month celebration of Soweto’s evening atmosphere, where the sunset turns the township into an amber‑lit canvas that reflects the community’s warmth, rhythm and resilience. It explores Soweto’s history of struggle and triumph—from forced removals and apartheid to becoming a hub of youth resistance and hope—and highlights the duality of pain and poetry in its creative spirit. The show gathers artists who capture the township’s soul through music, art and a strong sense of community, portraying how the people turn adversity into beauty and pass on vibrant, soulful stories. Ultimately, the sunset in Soweto symbolises that even after darkness there is always a warm, golden, deeply human light.

SUNSETS ARE BETTER IN SOWETO
Every evening, as the sun sets over Soweto, the township transforms into a living canvas – the streets bathed in amber light, reflecting the warmth, rhythm, and resilience of its people. Sunsets Are Better in Soweto is a two‑month‑long exhibition that celebrates this beauty: the daily ritual that reminds us of endurance, creativity, and community. Soweto's history is deeply intertwined with both struggle and triumph. Born from forced removals and the harsh architecture of apartheid, it became a place of resistance – a crucible of youth, rebellion, and hope. Today, Soweto stands not only as a symbol of South Africa's turbulent past but as a beacon of its creative spirit. This exhibition explores that duality: the pain and the poetry, the history and the horizon. Each work presented is an act of remembering and renewal – a reflection on what it means to live, create, and rise in a space where the sun continues to set beautifully, no matter the day's hardship.
Sunsets Are Better in Soweto brings together artists whose practices capture the soul of the township – its music, its art, its unshakable sense of community. The exhibition honours the people who, day after day, continue to build beauty out of adversity and pass down the skills, stories, and sounds that make Soweto what it is: vibrant, soulful, and unforgettably alive.
Featured Artists: Bayolise Gawe, Oteng Keabetswe, Tshepo Makoatsa, and Lerato Motau
Because when the sun sets in Soweto, it reminds us that even after darkness, there is always light – warm, golden, and deeply human. ...Sunsets Are Better in Soweto.

Exhibition Through Music:
Founded by Bilal da DJ and Abigale Calisse, Exhibition Through Music is a seasonal multidisciplinary platform that merges curated visual art with live music, performance, film screenings, and storytelling. The initiative centres both art and artist — cultivating intimate, sensory-driven experiences where community becomes the heartbeat of creativity.
Artworks curated by Abigale Calisse is a South African multidisciplinary artist whose work explores generational trauma, memory, and the inherited language of domestic craft. Having lived between South Africa and Mauritius before returning home, her practice bridges geography and emotion-anchored in the shared, silent legacies carried through womanhood. Working primarily in lithography and crochet, Abigale intertwines printmaking with tactile textile traditions to investigate themes of gender-based violence (GBV) and childhood trauma. Her work reflects on how trauma is not only experienced individually, but also passed down generationally-transmitted through the same hands that stitch, mend, and make. By printing lithographs on crocheted surfaces, she transforms the pattern itself into metaphor: each variation represents the shifting, cyclical nature of inherited pain and the resilience woven through it. At the core of her process is repetition-an act of quiet persistence. The meticulous, rhythmic motions of her mediums mirror the slow labour of healing. Through this, her studio becomes both a site of making and a space of recovery. Each thread, each print, becomes an intimate offering-an invitation to witness.
Music playlisted & lined up by born and raised in Soweto, Bilal Da DJ's sonic journey began in the most organic of ways-playing with friends and learning the craft from a neighbor, while being deeply influenced by the rhythms that filled his home thanks to his mother's eclectic music taste. Today, Bilal is an international DJ, producer, and sonic storyteller, known for his genre-fluid soundscapes that weave together bossa nova, jungle, Afrobeat, and organic percussion. He is primarily a vinyl DJ, but also seamlessly navigates digital platforms, allowing him to tailor each set to the venue, mood, and moment. He is the co-founder of Exhibition Through music and curates music with art.

The Black Management Forum (BMF) today issued a resolute call to all leaders across
sectors to raise their standard of leadership. Speaking at its high-level convening under the
theme Empowering SMMEs for Inclusive Growth, the Forum urged a shift from symbolic
transformation to systemic inclusion—particularly for small, medium and micro enterprises that remain locked out of economic participation.
The programme, held at 11 Alice Lane in Sandton, featured influential voices from both the public and private sectors. Among them were Mr. Mziwabantu Dayimani (NEF), Mr. Phuti Senyatsi (Sanlam Investments), and Mr. Khayelihle Sibiya (NEF), who together illustrated how finance and procurement systems must evolve to serve rather than exclude SMMEs.
