Hello! I’m a 22 year old cosplayer who likes to sew most of my own costumes and I’ve been cosplaying since 2018!

I’m currently a senior in uni majoring in theatre with a focus in costume construction.

I want to eventually make posts showing my process with my projects and post photoshoots of my cosplays! Be prepared for a lot of reading because I can ramble quite a bit.

I also plan on making videos of my process and I’m currently making a cosplay music video with my cosplay group @illuxionists!

Alice In NY Gackpoid Cosplay Journal

I started working on this while I was traveling abroad, so I didn’t have a sewing machine with me. I decided that I would hand sew the majority of it.

I started out by measuring my shoulder width. For the front I doubled the length so I could gather it. The back was the same as my measurement. Then I measured the length I wanted it to be. I cut these pieces out into squares since I didn’t have a body block, and had worked with making clothes from squares in a couple of previous projects.

I gathered the front and pinned the shoulder seams. I made sure that it would be able to fit over my head when I would cut a slit down the middle of the front. Then, I started sewing the shoulder seams together. I used a hand back stitch.

After finishing the shoulder seams, I trimmed the less neat side so that I could seal the raw edge. I did the same with the side seams, stopping where I wanted the armscye to be. Early in my planning I decided to not add sleeves so then I could not worry about the bulk with the bolero and and so I could save money on fabric. The majority of the blouse isn’t shown so most of it is up to interpretation.

To secure the seam, I just used a slip stitch. The photos here show both sides. Also it looks a lot better now because I pressed it.

When I got home from my trip, it was time to work on the collar. I measured the neckline of the blouse and made a few mistakes when cutting it out. (Cut the collar on the fold at the full measured length, making it way too long, then cutting it to be too short which caused time to have to make the inside of the collar two pieces.) I basted my interfacing to the outside piece and then sewed the two collar pieces right sides together. I turned it so that the right sides were out and then pressed the collar. I then used a top stitch so it wouldn’t move around.

I had also finished the armscye before working on the collar.

By now, I had cut a slit down the middle of the front for my head. I gathered each side separately and hand sewed the slit to encase the raw edge. The open edge of the collar got pinned to the neckline.

I sewed the collar on and realized after a try-on that the collar was too long but I had already trimmed and sewn so many pieces and honestly didn’t feel like seam ripping so I decided to slip stitch the remaining edge down and just fold over the edges of the collar so that it would fit. It also helped hide the slit that I had made and made it look more accurate to the reference.

Blouse has been completed!

I added a hook and eye and did a rolled hem by hand at the bottom. I may fix the hook and eye though.

For the vest part of the cosplay, I'm going to make a corset with a partial skirt that can be detached in the back. I wanted to see if the blouse would look right with a corset so I used my sibling's corset from their Banica Conchita cosplay.

I think the next part of the cosplay l'm going to work on is the bolero. I need to start patterning it soon.

Last night I made the sleeve (I'm gonna retrace it because it's very hefty) and now I'm working on the body part of the bolero. I'll put those into a mock-up and if they work out I'll make the collar pattern and mock that up too.

Still using my sibling’s corset as a reference, I have the mock-up partially put together and found that I want to open up the armscye a little more and possibly put a gusset under the sleeve.

I also pinned the darts that were in the back (not pictured), I liked how it looked a lot better than without the darts done.

I will also be making the back neckline wider because the seam allowance is sort of cutting into my neck, and there’s gonna be an extravagant collar that needs the space.

I may also add more volume to the sleeve? I need to gather the one I have to see if it’s needed.

I also need to decide if I want to wear a binder with this cosplay, I’m only nervous about it because I’m already gonna be wearing a corset. (or I could figure out how to tape…)

Didn’t get much done today, but last night I trimmed the armscye, sewed the darts, and fully sewed the sleeve in the a gather at the bottom. The armscye was good but I decided that the sleeve was too small.

Today I trimmed the pattern’s armscye the same amount as I did on the mock-up. I then altered the sleeve pattern and made it longer. I traced a new version and measured lines to cut along if I decided I wanted to make it bigger. In the picture I’m about to cut out the mock-up of that and tomorrow I will try to test out the new version of the sleeve.

Sorry for the jumpscare everyone…

I’ve had this cosplay since 2018, so it was first and oldest cosplay (if we don’t count my Lapis Lazuli Halloween costume from when I didn’t know what cosplay was). I still haven’t everything except for the pants and shoes I originally wore with it, however, I no longer need a wig because my hairstyle is so similar to his now.

I haven’t seen the show since 2018 and admittedly I somehow blocked out the majority of the time from when I had seen it a couple months into 2019 before remembering what had happened. I just had the urge to cosplay him and finally did it again.
