you don't like sleeping alone. kaiser not only knows this, but he teases you relentlessly about it. about how you cling to him in your sleep. about how you'll plead with him, only half-conscious, not to leave when he tries to slip out of bed in the early hours of the morning. he delights in how embarrassed you get when he brings it up. revels in your feeble attempts to deny what you both know to be true.

but when you wake up early one morning, still tucked up in bed and wrapped around the comforting warmth of a toned body, you're quietly beyond pleased with the circumstances. it seems this morning you've managed to stir before he's had to slip away, and can luxuriate for just a little while longer in the warmth that radiates from him beneath the plush hotel sheets.

but that contentment doesn't last, because when you lift your head to greet him, you're shocked to find ness at your side—wide awake, and peering at you with startling alertness.

your entire body goes stiff.

"michael was right," he says, his tone entirely too jovial for how horrified you are. his smile too easy and sincere for the circumstances. "you really are clingy in the morning."

you can't even bring yourself to speak. to move. to breathe. there's something unpleasant sitting in the pit of your stomach, inching up to the back of your throat the longer it's left to swell; heavy like shock, but cold like dread.

"don't worry, michael will be back soon," ness says, but you take no comfort from his words of reassurance. he reaches out, and you flinch, but he simply picks up the sheet and brings it up to cover your bare shoulder from where it had slipped down your back. "he just told me to keep the bed warm."

i also think you’d break up with sae because he can’t commit and less than a year later you’re engaged to someone else, and sae’s at your door begging you to not get married to that other guy, but to him instead.

making myself SICK just thinking about a longterm situationship with sae that you finally get yourself out of. only for him to decide he wants you exclusively when you start dating someone else.

ending your relationship with kaiser and all the events that led up to it had to have been some of the worst moments of your life.

he’d been irrational your entire relationship. jealous and possessive and insecure, borderline scary at times.

the big bang, as your friends have so lovingly dubbed it, really shouldn’t have even been as big of a deal as it was.

but he set you off, and in turn you set him off. he said vile things, talked about all the women he could have and fuck yet he ended up with an uptight little bitch instead. you called him an insecure freak and the argument ended with him throwing a plate at the wall you had been standing near.

of all the things he was, kaiser had never been physically violent. he said hateful words, he raged, but never had done something like that.

you’d both stared at each other, breathing heavy, trying to decide what to say. he apologized, got down on his knees and begged for your forgiveness.

you left.

it’s been weeks. you haven’t been well, made yourself sick over it every day.

or at least you thought it was that.

the two pink lines on the stick you’re holding say otherwise.

“fuck,” is all you can manage.

this. this is the single worst moment of your life.

your hands shake as you reach for your phone, immediately going to his contact, thumb hovering over call.

do you even need to tell him? realistically? chances are he won’t want to be involved. he’s probably spent every night fucking a new girl since you left him. does he really have to know?

shaking your head, you text him instead of call.

hey. can we talk?

he reads it immediately, responding even faster.

you’re sitting across from sae at a nice cafe for lunch, and while he can tell you’re having a good time, you’re fidgety and keep checking your phone.

“you shouldn’t worry so much.” his tone would sound rude to anyone else, but you know him.

“he never offers to take him anywhere,” you frown, “i’m worried one of them will get overwhelmed.”

sae shrugs at your worry, “then they get overwhelmed. it’s good for him to see his dad,”

you give sae a look like you know he’s lying.

bub isn’t his. he knows that, bub knows that.

but he’s been your boyfriend for almost as long as bub’s been alive. he’s consistent and present. he doesn’t get confused for dad, but he’s there when the kid is sick and sad and has nightmares. he’s woken up dozens of mornings to a tiny elbow or knee digging into his back.

he may not have created him, but you both know he isn’t just mommy’s boyfriend. not really.

you’re still frowning, “i just hate that he does this. he just shows up when he feels like it and doesn’t care how it affects him.”

sae grabs your hand from across the table, fingers tracing your rings, “he’s a sack of shit. but he’s still bub’s dad, and bub loves him. he doesn’t act out when he is or isn’t around. there are worse things that we could be dealing with, babe,”

you like the way he says we. like it’s a bump in the road the two of you can get over together.

“plus it’s just the aquarium for an afternoon. if i can handle that by myself, i think kaiser can handle that,”

you smile at him, about to agree when your phone rings.

you sigh, taking your hand out of his and answering your phone.

“hey. wait, wait, will you slow down?”

the way you’re talking makes sae wish he never said anything about how kaiser shouldn’t have a hard time.

“stitches?” you gasp, hands shaking as you start grabbing your stuff and looking at sae terrified.

sae, immediately, stands to help you up. setting some cash on the table as he grabs your elbow to guide you out of the cafe.

“we’re on our way just tell me where you’re at,” he can hear kaiser on the other end of the line, but can’t make out what he’s saying. his ears are ringing loudly and all he can think about is bub.

by the time he gets you to the car, you’re off the phone and nearly hyperventilating.

“baby,” he grabs both your hands from across the center console. “i know this is scary, but you’ve gotta calm down and tell me where we’re goin’”

you nod shakily, telling him the address of the hospital kaiser gave you.

sae gets you to the hospital in record time, guides you to the emergency room where kaiser is sitting and waiting for you.

“where is he?” kaiser looks at you, and if you didn’t know him as well as you do, you’d think he was irritated.

“they took him back just now,” you look shocked, and sae speaks up before you can.

“why did you not go with him?” his eyes are blank, but you can see a twitch in his brow.

“he told me he didn’t want me to go with him and to send his mommy back when she got here,”

you roll your eyes mumbling that he unbelievable as you rush to the nearest nurse who takes you to your baby.

sae is more confrontational than you are.

“he shouldn’t have gone alone.” his statement doesn’t leave any room for kaiser to argue.

“he didn’t want me to go with him, kept asking for her. asking for you,”

sae rolls his eyes when he meets kaiser’s glare, “now isn’t the time for you to be acting like an asshole,”

he sits in the uncomfortable chair next to him in silence until a nurse comes, asking kaiser for insurance information.

sae watches as kaiser pathetically explains he doesn’t have bub’s information, before rolling his eyes and pulling the insurance card he keeps with him out of his wallet and handing it to the nurse, who apologizes for the confusion as she walks off.

“you keepin’ insurance on my kid now?” sae didn’t think he could roll his eyes anymore.

“no. i keep the card incase something happens and he’s with me. what would it matter if i did, though?”

kaiser doesn’t have a response, and sae’s glad when he shuts up for once.

sae can’t say he’s the biggest fan of kids. they tend to be obnoxious. always falling over, sneezing and drooling everywhere, not to mention tiny, grubby hands always touching everything.

your son isn’t bad, though.

he’s nearly three and doesn’t cry as much as he used to. he’s also getting a bit of a personality now, which is nice. he laughs at everything and spends a lot of time trying to run around.

he’s pretty attached to sae’s hip, too. always wants to play, or color, or watch soccer with him. you offhandedly tell him that it’s nice they get along, but you’re pretty jealous.

yeah, you’re kid isn’t so bad.

he looks identical to his father though. blonde hair and blue eyes. he’s cuter than that douche bag, though. way cuter.

currently, he’s having a staring contest with those little blue eyes. he’s winning, but he doesn’t tell your kid that, just lets him keep staring.

a giggle from you pulls both their attention away. sae offhandedly hums at you in question.

“he pouts just like you,”

his brow furrows as he looks back at the boy, who is in fact pouting at him.

all he sees is a face with little traces of you mixed with a man he despises.

“i don’t think so,” you huff a laugh.

“you’re literally doing it right now,”

it isn’t the first time you’ve caught your son mimicking your boyfriend’s facial expressions. it’s becoming more frequent though, now that the three of you live together.

he’s about to respond when you’re phone dings. whatever it says makes you frown as you type a response.

there’s a knock at the door as you set the phone down, causing you to roll your eyes and look at sae apologetically.

he’s got a familiar sick feeling in his stomach as you leave the kitchen to go answer it, knowing exactly who decided to show up. he sighs as he stands up, giving your son a pat on the head as he goes to check on you and your unexpected visitor.

he towers over you in the entryway as the two of you whisper frantically at each other.

“we have plans today. you can’t just show up unannounced.”

he scoffs, “i texted you,”

“two seconds before knocking on the door!”

sae clears his throat causing both of your heads to shoot his way.

kaiser glares at him, “isn’t it a little early for your boyfriend to be here?” the word boyfriend is spit out and filled with venom.

before you can say anything, sae speaks up with a bored tone, “i live here. don’t act like you don’t know that.”

kaiser frowns at the reminder, but before he can respond, the three of you tense at the sound of little feet rushing into the room.

“daddy!” kaiser smirks in your direction as he picks his son up.

“hey, buddy!”

you frown, glancing over at sae, who has a dead look on his face as he watches the scene in front of him.

you look back at your son, the mirror image of his father. he’s gleaming.

“mommy! can daddy go with us to the movies today?” the question is rushed, and he still stumbles on some of his words, but he makes your heart melt.

“well, buddy-“

kaiser laughs and cuts you off, “buddy, daddy wants to take you to the aquarium today. doesn’t that sound like more fun than the movies?”

you watch as your baby slightly deflates, not liking the idea of changing day plans so last minute. still smiling, he looks at you unsure.

you smile at him as move closer, “baby, do you want to go with dad? we can reschedule the movie,”

he frowns a little, and his eyes move from you, to michael, to sae, “but bub can’t go tomorrow,”

you keep the smile on your face, “we can go a different day with bub, baby,”

kaiser frowns at the concern your son shows for the other man.

“bub, you love the aquarium. you can go with your dad today and we can watch the movie on my next off day,”

it surprises you that sae spoke up in favor of your son going with kaiser. not that he ever tries to step in on parenting, but you know he can’t stand kaiser.

“are you sure?” kaiser scoffs as your son shifts around to look at sae, look for reassurance from the only constant man in his life.

sae nods at him “yeah, i’m sure. i can take mom out while you go,”

your son nods, seemingly excited again, “yeah, yeah! take mom out!”

kaiser deflates just enough for you to notice, looking at you out of the corner of his eye before he nods at his son, “well, buddy you better go get dressed,”

your son wiggles his way out of kaiser’s grasp to run to his room, leaving the three of you in an awkward silence.

you’re nervous. kaiser hasn’t spent a lot of time alone with him. doesn’t know his likes or dislikes. it’s starting to feel like a bad idea.

sae, as if he feels the anxiety coming off of you, puts his hand on your shoulder, “why don’t you go get a bag ready for bub?”

you nod, “right,” a fake smile takes over your features as you glance at kaiser, “i’ll pack him a change of clothes and some snacks. what time will you guys be back?”

kaiser gives you a noncommittal hm, too busy glaring at sae, “before 5,”

sae’s glaring right back. neither of them blinking.

you’re sitting awkwardly at their dining room table when shinsuke and his wife make their way back into the room.

you smile softly, despite the fact that you definitely heard her yelling at him and calling you every name in the book.

you don’t miss the glare she sends shin’s way when he takes the seat next to you, either.

it’s very awkward, and honestly you’re extremely uncomfortable. you glance over at shin, wincing when you hear his wife let out a huff.

he clears his throat, trying to figure out what to say.

“how often do you intend on letting us have the baby here?”

his wife speaks up, asking what kita would consider to be the worst possible question to start with.

your brows furrow, “oh, well i’m not sure. i haven’t really thought about it, i only just told kita,”

she hums, “you seem to not really think about a lot of things, then,”

you and kita both tense at her words, “aimi,” his tone is firm. a warning.

“i beg your pardon?”

“i mean you slept with my husband, which i’m assuming you didn’t really think about. you got pregnant, which i am assuming you didn’t really think about. i think you should start thinking a little more, is all.”

you don’t even know what to say. the hormones have tears welling in your eyes as you stand up.

“i’m leaving,” you don’t even spare her a glance, looking only at shinsuke as you walk out of the dining room to put your shoes on so you can leave.

“wait,” shin rushes after you, surprised at how fast you can move in your current condition. by the time he reaches you, you’re already to your car.

“hey just wait a secon-“

you cut him off with a glare, “she can be angry all she likes. i understand we did something wrong but she sure as hell can’t speak to me like that. let alone speak to me like that and be around my son,”

he winces at your tone, “i know, and i told her this was a bad idea. she’s still upset but she insisted.”

you’re still glaring, not caring for his explanation, “i do not know when i will be comfortable with the baby being here. i plan on breastfeeding for as long as possible. and honestly, i still don’t know you very well,”

he frowns, “we can get to know each other still, but you have to let me see him,”

your eyes soften, “i would never keep him from you. i just don’t know how to do this.”

he gives you a tight smile and puts his hand on your shoulder, “yeah, me either. but we can figure it out together.”
